Metal removal from soil leachates using DTPA-functionalised maghemite nanoparticles, a potential soil washing technology.

There is significant current interest in the application of magnetic (magnetite or maghemite) nanoparticles functionalised with chelating agents for the environmental remediation of metal contaminated waters and solutions. Whilst there is a body of knowledge about the potential remediation efficacy of such engineered nanoparticles from studies involving synthetic solutions of single metals, there is relatively little data involving mixed-metal solutions and virtually no studies about nanoparticle performance in chemically complex environmental solutions representing those to which a scaled-up

Legacy soil contamination at abandoned mine sites: making a case for guidance on soil protection.

Within the European Union, guidance in the form of a uniform Soil Directive does not exist and member states are left to enact their own legislation governing historic soil contamination. Several historic or "legacy" sites exist in Cyprus - an EU member state with a long history of mining and a significant number of abandoned mining sites. The gold-silver enrichment plant of Mitsero village was abandoned 70 years ago, yet soil samples inside and outside the plant were extremely low in pH, exhibited high leachability of heavy metals and high cyanide levels. Water samples collected from an ephem

Combining phytoextraction and biochar addition improves soil biochemical properties in a soil contaminated with Cd.

The main goal of phytoremediation is to improve ecosystem functioning. Soil biochemical properties are considered as effective indicators of soil quality and are sensitive to various environmental stresses, including heavy metal contamination. The biochemical response in a soil contaminated with cadmium was tested after several treatments aimed to reduce heavy metal availability including liming, biochar addition and phytoextraction using Amaranthus tricolor L. Two biochars were added to the soil: eucalyptus pyrolysed at 600 °C (EB) and poultry litter at 400 °C (PLB). Two liming treatments wer

Revitalisation of metal-contaminated, EDTA-washed soil by addition of unpolluted soil, compost and biochar: Effects on soil enzyme activity, microbial community composition and abundance.

Soil remediation mitigates hazards from contaminants but could deprive soils of initial biota and enzymes. Historically contaminated acidic soil from Arnoldstein (Austria) and calcareous soil from Meza (Slovenia) were washed with 30 and 100 mmol kg-1 ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) to remove 78 and 60% of Pb as a main pollutant. Remediation of the Arnoldstein soil decreased urease activity and increased β-glucosidase activity, measured in a 15-week experiment. The dehydrogenase activity and microbial gene abundances were not significantly impeded compared to the original soil. Conversely, t

Quicklime-induced changes of soil properties: Implications for enhanced remediation of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated soils via mechanical soil aeration.

Mechanical soil aeration is used for soil remediation at sites contaminated by volatile organic compounds. However, the effectiveness of the method is limited by low soil temperature, high soil moisture, and high soil viscosity. Combined with mechanical soil aeration, quicklime has a practical application value related to reinforcement remediation and to its action in the remediation of soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds. In this study, the target pollutant was trichloroethylene, which is a volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutant commonly found in contaminated soils. A restor

Simultaneous sorption and desorption of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in acid soils II. Soil ranking and influence of soil characteristics.

In Part I of this paper we reported, for each of 11 acid soils, the rankings of six metals according to their sorption from solutions containing all six, and according to their retention under desorption conditions. Here, we analyse the same data from a different perspective: for each metal, we rank the soils by their capacities to sorb and retain it as reflected by soil/solution distribution coefficients K(d100) measured using starting solutions containing 100mgL(-1) of each metal. We also ranked the soils for overall heavy metal sorption and retention capacities using Kaplan's compound measu

Soil Resistomes in a Tropical Watershed are Indirectly Structured by Bacterial Community Interactions with Soil Properties.

Soils are recognized as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) with the potential to transfer to clinical pathogens, creating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) that poses a threat to human health. While large-scale AMR surveys have profiled how diverse biomes shape soil resistomes, less is known about the influence of specific soil properties. Here, we combined metagenomics and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing with isolate-based approaches to investigate drivers of soil AMR across a tropical watershed from beach to mountaintop in Waimea Valley, O'ahu, Hawai i. We leveraged functional- and t

Soil water and inorganic nitrogen contents drive soil microbial carbon fixation during wetland reclamation and restoration.

Wetlands are critical terrestrial carbon sinks, playing a vital role in mitigating global warming by fixing substantial atmospheric carbon dioxide. To explore how wetland reclamation and restoration affect soil microbial carbon fixation, we sampled soils from five land-use types in western Jilin Province, China: undisturbed natural reed wetland, reclaimed rice paddy and upland field, restored agricultural drainage wetland and naturally restored wetland after farmland abandonment. We analyzed the effects of wetland reclamation and restoration on microbial communities, metabolic pathways, and ca

New insights into soil amendment: Impact of humic acid on typical antibiotic resistance in agricultural soil.

Humic acid (HA) addition can improve agricultural soil, but little is known about how it affects the soil resistome. In this study, we used selective agar plate combined with quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate how HA influences antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in soil contaminated with erythromycin and kanamycin. 0.1 % HA reduced the abundance of culturable erythromycin-resistant bacteria (ERB), while promoting the growth of kanamycin-resistant bacteria (KRB). Lysinibacillus and Paenibacillus were the dominant genera in

Organophosphate ester flame retardants in Nepalese soil: Spatial distribution, source apportionment and air-soil exchange assessment.

Despite soil being the major terrestrial environmental reservoir and one of the significant sinks for many hydrophobic organic compounds including organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRs), limited information is available about concentration and fate of OPFRs contamination in urban soil in general and especially in case of Nepal. This study investigates the environmental concentration, spatial distribution and source apportionment of eight OPFRs in surface soil (n = 28) from four major cities of Nepal with special interest on air-soil exchange. Overall, significantly high concentrations

Enhancing pyrene mineralization in contaminated soil by the addition of humic acids or composted contaminated soil.

The addition of composted PAH-contaminated soil to PAH-contaminated soil spiked with 14C-labeled pyrene resulted in rapid mineralization of pyrene (more than 57% after 21 days compared with 3.4% in un-amended soil). The addition of the humic acid fraction of the composted soil also increased the mineralization potential of the soil significantly, but to a lesser extent (37.5% mineralization after 106 days compared with 20.6% in unamended soil). Increasing the humic acid concentration increased mineralization up to a maximum of more than three times the unamended rate, after which the rate of p

Soil microbiome perturbation impedes growth of Bouteloua curtipendula and increases relative abundance of soil microbial pathogens.

Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama) is a valuable prairie grass for livestock forage, supporting food webs of herbivorous insects, reducing soil erosion, and limiting weed infiltration in urban grasslands. Efficient establishment of B. curtipendula in prairie restorations and urban plantings could drastically improve long-term functionality of the space. Soil microbial communities have been linked to plant germination, growth, and drought tolerance in many plant species, however little is known about the factors contributing to B. curtipendula germination and early growth. In this study, w

Soil flooding suppresses Fusarium wilt in watermelon by modulating soil chemical properties and microbial community richness.

Soil flooding is a well-documented agricultural practice for disease control, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of soil flooding on watermelon growth, soil chemical properties, enzyme activities, and the diversity and richness of microbial community structure, and to examine the relationships between these factors and wilt incidence. The results showed that soil flooding reduced the population of FON and Fusarium wilt incidence, promoted plant growth, increased soil AP and AK contents, increased UA and ALPA acti

Dynamics of soil organic carbon under wheat cultivation in saline soil of the Yellow River Delta.

The stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) in the saline-alkali farmlands of the Yellow River Delta is influenced by both salt stress and planting patterns. Understanding how these factors jointly regulate soil carbon pools and their active components is crucial for analyzing carbon cycling in saline-alkali lands and optimizing soil improvement strategies. This study focuses on coastal saline-alkali farmlands in the Yellow River Delta, comparing a control plot of untreated bare land with a treatment plot where wheat is cultivated following rice. Utilizing the natural salt gradient, we systemat

Tracing Soil CO2 Fluxes under Drying-Rewetting Cycles: Isotopic Insights from an Automatic Soil Incubation System.

Climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of droughts and heavy rainfall events globally, with significant consequences on the terrestrial carbon cycle. One of the most critical yet highly variable components of the carbon cycle is the soil CO2 pulse triggered by precipitation events in dryland ecosystems. To examine the processes underlying the soil CO2 pulse under changing precipitation patterns, we developed a unique Online Automatic Soil Incubation System (OASIS) that allows (1) accurate manipulation of drying and rewetting regimes; (2) continuous monitoring of soi

Foam-Enhanced Air Sparging Coupled with Soil Vapor Extraction for Remediation of Trichloroethylene DNAPL-Contaminated Soil.

Conventional remediation technologies, such as soil vapor extraction (SVE) and air sparging combined with SVE (AS-SVE), are often constrained by gas channeling and mass-transfer limitations when treating trichloroethylene (TCE) dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zones. To overcome these challenges, this study developed an integrated oxidative foam-enhanced AS-SVE (Oxi-FEAS-SVE) system to improve contaminant accessibility, contaminant mass transfer, and degradation efficiency. The system employed oxidative foam composed of 32 mM α-olefin sulfonate (AOS) and 1500 mM sodium persulfate (

Phthalates and pharmaceuticals in soil, groundwater, and surface water downgradient of a wastewater soil infiltration system.

This study investigates the occurrence, attenuation, and ecological risks of phthalates and pharmaceuticals in a long-operating wastewater soil infiltration system in northern Sweden. Concentrations of 15 phthalates, 67 pharmaceuticals, caffeine, and acesulfame K were measured in influent wastewater, groundwater, soil, and a downgradient pond across multiple seasons. Results showed that most micropollutant removal occurred in the unsaturated soil zone prior to groundwater recharge, possibly due to processes such as biodegradation and sorption. Substantial reductions were observed for caffeine
