Polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) isolated from the defibrinated blood of 44 healthy volunteers (20 no smoking subjects and 22 smokers) were examined for the presence of tobacco antigens using specific rabbit antiserum conjugated with FITC. In 11 persons from the smokers group PMNL were examined by the direct immunofluorescence technique, using appropriate antisera, as well as for the presence of IgG, IgM and C3. It was stated that the number of PMNL with fluorescent tobacco antigens rose significantly after exposure to tobacco smoke. The above cells were detected both in non-smokers and smo

Polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) are type-3 copper enzymes and are involved in many biological processes. However, the potential functions of PPOs in pollination are not fully understood. In this work, we have screened 13 PPO members in Nicotiana. tabacum (named NtPPO1-13, NtPPOs) to explore their characteristics and functions in pollination. The results show that NtPPOs are closely related to PPOs in Solanaceae and share conserved domains except NtPPO4. Generally, NtPPOs are diversely expressed in different tissues and are distributed in pistil and male gametes. Specifically, NtPPO9 and NtPPO10 are

The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis, in vast regions of the Old World. In addition to blood, the sand flies feed on plants. In a study of this diet, we observed that one night of feeding on branches of Solanum jasminoides, Ricinus communis, or Bougainvillea glabra drastically shortened the life span of the sand flies. Flowering B. glabra attracted P. papatasi in the field. Nevertheless, in the region endemic for L. major in yards abounding with vector sand flies, the number of P. papatasi trapped near hedges of B. glabra was eight

Transcriptome annotations provide essential information on transcript locations, sequences and structures, including transcription start, end sites and splice junctions. They underpin key biological analyses such as gene and transcript quantification, and the study of transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, including alternative transcription initiation, polyadenylation and splicing. Accurate characterisation of transcript isoforms is critical for understanding how gene expression relates to functional protein products. However, for many species-including Solanaceae crops such as

Anisodamine is an anticholinergic drug extracted and isolated from the Anisodus tanguticus (Maxim.) Pascher of the Solanaceae family which is also a muscarinic receptor antagonist. Owing to the lack of natural sources of anisodamine, synthetic products are now used. Using ornithine and arginine as precursor compounds, putrescine is catalyzed by different enzymes and then undergoes a series of reactions to produce anisodamine. It has been used clinically to protect cardiac function and treat septic shock, acute pancreatitis, calculous renal colic, bronchial asthma, blood circulation disturbance

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurring, inflammatory skin disorder resulting in skin abscesses and sinus tracts of the skin folds. Hidradenitis suppurativa remains a disease with limited treatment options. Management of disease activity with dietary modification has been of considerable interest to the HS patient community. Limited evidence exists to support dietary changes for treatment of HS. Strategies such as eliminating dairy products, limiting simple carbohydrate and sugar intake, and avoiding nightshades (Solanaceae) and foods containing brewer's yeast have been reported

Tropane alkaloids such as atropine and scopolamine are naturally occurring compounds found in various plants of the Solanaceae family, notably Datura species. Although widely used in clinical settings, their potent anticholinergic properties can lead to severe toxic effects. Fatalities involving these substances remain rare, particularly in accidental contexts. Here, the authors report the case of a 58-year-old male who died following the accidental consumption of a meal suspected to have been contaminated with plant material containing tropane alkaloids. At autopsy, blackish vomitus containin

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta, is one of the major pests of tomato and other Solanaceae in many regions worldwide. In the search for new strategies to control this pest, we present herewith the stereoselective synthesis, electrophysiological activity, functional analysis, and field tests of new chemicals as possible antagonists of the sex pheromone of the leafminer. The chemicals are methyl ketone (MK) and trifluoromethyl ketone (TFMK) structural analogues of both components of the pheromone. Most of the chemicals exerted per se some electrophysiological activity and inhibited the electr

Nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins assemble into genetically linked pairs to mediate effector-triggered immunity (ETI) in plants. Here, we characterize the paired NLRs NRCX and NARY (NRCX adjacent resistance gene Y) in Nicotiana benthamiana. CRISPR/Cas9 knockout of NRCX caused severe dwarfism and constitutively activated immunity, marked by PR1 upregulation and enhanced resistance to Phytophthora capsici. Co-silencing or double knockout of the adjacent NLR NARY partially rescued the nrcx phenotype, revealing NARY as a compensatory regulator that modulates growth and immunity

Potato virus Y (PVY) significantly reduces yield in economically important Solanaceae crops, while the limited availability of effective antiviral agents in the market highlights the necessity for exploring innovative antiviral lead structures. Herein, we disclose a new analogue of virucidal compounds, which are designed by molecular hybridization of natural indole and vanillin moieties. Most hybrid derivatives under bio-assay exhibit anti-PVY properties. Compound C7, in particular, shows superior inactivating effects to PVY, with a median effect concentration (EC50) of 121.3 ± 4.9 μg/mL, whic

Solanum guaraniticum is a shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family popularly known in Brazil as jurubeba or false-jurubeba. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of crude extract and chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions from its leaves, verifying the ability to remove reactive species and identify and quantify phenolic compounds. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest amount of total polyphenols (546.57 ± 2.35 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) and the lowest IC(50) (9.11 ± 0.75 µg/mL) by the DPPH method. Furthermore, the chloroform fraction presented the

Immunopotentiation on oral feeding of standardized aqueous extract of Withania somnifera (Linn. Dunal, Family Solanaceae) was evaluated in laboratory animals immunized with DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) vaccine. The immunostimulation was evaluated using serological and hematological parameters. Treatment of immunized animals with test material (100 mg/kg/day) for 15 days resulted in significant increase of antibody titers to B. pertussis (P=0.000007). Immunized animals (treated and untreated) were challenged with B. pertussis 18,323 strain and the animals were observed for 14 days. Resu
