Shared and Distinct Phonemic Features in Sound-Shape and Sound-Size Correspondences: A Study of Mandarin Chinese.

Certain speech sounds are consistently associated with visual properties such as shape and size, a phenomenon known as crossmodal correspondences. Well-established examples demonstrate that the vowel /u/ is often linked to rounder and larger objects, while /i/ is associated with more angular and smaller ones. However, most previous research utilized English pseudowords, leaving a gap in our understanding of how these correspondences manifest in tonal languages. The current study extends the investigation to Mandarin Chinese, a tonal language, to examine the roles of vowels, consonants, and lex

A robust method for online heart sound localization in respiratory sound based on temporal fuzzy c-means.

This work presents a detailed framework to detect the location of heart sound within the respiratory sound based on temporal fuzzy c-means (TFCM) algorithm. In the proposed method, respiratory sound is first divided into frames and for each frame, the logarithmic energy features are calculated. Then, these features are used to classify the respiratory sound as heart sound (HS containing lung sound) and non-HS (only lung sound) by the TFCM algorithm. The TFCM is the modified version fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. While the FCM algorithm uses only the local information about the current frame, t

Fetal response to sound stimulation: preliminary report exploring use of sound stimulation in routine obstetrical ultrasound examinations.

An artificial larynx was used to sound-stimulate 693 human fetuses with gestational age ranging from 21 to 42 weeks. Fetuses were monitored, with simultaneous ultrasound, for immediate, increased motor activity after the stimulus. Each was scored as either demonstrating for startle response or having no visible response to the stimulus. Four zones of gestational development were determined: nonstartle zone (gestation age below 24 weeks), in which none reacted; transitional zone A (24 to 27 weeks), in which 30% reacted, transitional zone B (27 to 30 weeks), in which 86% reacted; and startle zon

Sound Detection Monitoring Tool in CNC Milling Sounds by K-Means Clustering Algorithm.

Computer numerical control (CNC) is a machine used in the manufacturing industry to produce components quickly for the engineering field or the desired shape. In the milling process carried out by CNC machines, sometimes vibrations occur that cause unwanted cracks or damage, which if left unchecked, will cause more severe damage. For this reason, this study describes how to monitor and analyze the sound produced by CNC during the milling process. This study uses six sound sample videos from YouTube, and there are two modes: (1) the operating mode is three different shapes with XY, XZ, and XYZ

Auscultation System for Acquisition of Vascular Sounds - Towards Sound-Based Monitoring of the Carotid Artery.

INTRODUCTION: Atherosclerotic diseases of the carotid are a primary cause of cerebrovascular events such as stroke. For the diagnosis and monitoring angiography, ultrasound- or magnetic resonance-based imaging is used which requires costly hardware. In contrast, the auscultation of carotid sounds and screening for bruits - audible patterns related to turbulent blood flow - is a simple examination with comparably little technical demands. It can indicate atherosclerotic diseases and justify further diagnostics but is currently subjective and examiner dependent. METHODS: We propose an easy-to-u

By the sound of it. An ERP investigation of human action sound processing in 7-month-old infants.

Recent evidence suggests that human adults perceive human action sounds as a distinct category from human vocalizations, environmental, and mechanical sounds, activating different neural networks (Engel et al., 2009; Lewis et al., 2011). Yet, little is known about the development of such specialization. Using event-related potentials (ERP), this study investigated neural correlates of 7-month-olds' processing of human action (HA) sounds in comparison to human vocalizations (HV), environmental (ENV), and mechanical (MEC) sounds. Relative to the other categories, HA sounds led to increased posit

Pattern of localisation error in patients with stroke to sound processed by a binaural sound space processor.

OBJECTIVE: The ability of 46 patients with supratentorial stroke and 15 healthy subjects to localise sounds was tested using an apparatus with headphone and sound space processor. METHODS: With a binaural sound space processor, sounds were randomly presented from seven directions in the 180 degree frontal area of the subject at intervals of 30 degrees. The subject was asked to imagine a clock face through the horizontal plane passing through the subject's ears with 12 o'clock denoting a sound from directly in front of the subject. After each sound, the subject indicated the direction from whi

The physiologic cause of swallowing sounds: answers from heart sounds and vocal tract acoustics.

A hypothetical discussion of the cause of swallowing sounds is presented. It is suggested that the pharynx contains a number of valves and pumps that produce reverberations within the pharynx to generate swallowing sounds. As heart sounds are propagated via vibration of muscles and valves, it is further suggested that an analogy exists between the generation of heart sounds and swallowing sounds. This new theory is known as the cardiac analogy hypothesis. The inability of the current literature to explain the cause of swallowing sounds is seen to limit the diagnostic potential of cervical ausc

[Use of recording methods and sound analysis of cough in the study of sound phenomena associated with respiration].

The objective registration of the human body functions is one of the main tasks of the modern and prospective medicine. The registration of the heart, brain, muscles etc. activity have a long tradition. The registration of sound processes, for instance coughing was not solved completely despite their diagnostic importance. The authors worked out a new non invasive and precise method for cough sound registration and analysis which allows evaluation of the sound pattern, intensity and time duration. Application of this method for registration and analysis of the cry of new-borns gave rise to dou

[Contoursonagraphic analysis of heart sound phenomena and sounds produced by various heart valve prostheses].

The normal heart sounds, murmurs, opening and closing sounds of aortic and mitral valve prostheses were recorded on a tape and analyzed in terms of contour sonagrams in order to obtain the highest frequencies which were recordable on the chest wall. The peak frequencies showed a broad range, the maximum beeing reached at about 8000 c.p.s. in the case of the sounds of prosthetic valves. Furthermore, sound level examinations of the normal first and second heart sound, as well as of the opening and closing sounds of the aortic valve prostheses were performed. The highest sound level of all of the

Multistable mechanical metamaterials for sound absorption.

Designing acoustic metamaterials with high sound absorption coefficients under low-frequency and broad-bandwidth conditions remains a highly challenging task. This paper proposes a tunable acoustic metamaterial based on a multistable structure to achieve low-frequency broadband sound absorption. The metamaterial integrates multistable thin-walled tube (MTWT) units with embedded neck structures to form Helmholtz-type resonators. The introduction of multistability enables a synergistic combination of multiple dissipation mechanisms: beyond classical Helmholtz resonance, the structure incorporate

Application of kurtosis to underwater sound.

Regulations for underwater anthropogenic noise are typically formulated in terms of peak sound pressure, root-mean-square sound pressure, and (weighted or unweighted) sound exposure. Sound effect studies on humans and other terrestrial mammals suggest that in addition to these metrics, the impulsiveness of sound (often quantified by its kurtosis β) is also related to the risk of hearing impairment. Kurtosis is often used to distinguish between ambient noise and transients, such as echolocation clicks and dolphin whistles. A lack of standardization of the integration interval leads to ambiguous

Heart sound classification from unsegmented phonocardiograms.

OBJECTIVE: Most algorithms for automated analysis of phonocardiograms (PCG) require segmentation of the signal into the characteristic heart sounds. The aim was to assess the feasibility for accurate classification of heart sounds on short, unsegmented recordings. APPROACH: PCG segments of 5 s duration from the PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge database were analysed. Initially the 5 s segment at the start of each recording (seg 1) was analysed. Segments were zero-mean but otherwise had no pre-processing or segmentation. Normalised spectral amplitude was determined by fast Fourier t

Carrion's Disease: the Sound of Silence.

Carrion's disease (CD) is a neglected biphasic vector-borne illness related to Bartonella bacilliformis. It is found in the Andean valleys and is transmitted mainly by members of the Lutzomyia genus but also by blood transfusions and from mother to child. The acute phase, Oroya fever, presents severe anemia and fever. The lethality is high in the absence of adequate treatment, despite the organism being susceptible to most antibiotics. Partial immunity is developed after infection by B. bacilliformis, resulting in high numbers of asymptomatic carriers. Following infection there is the chronic

Sound localization measured by eye-tracking.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a new method of measuring sound localization ability based on eye-tracking and to test this method by analysing the influence of mild induced conductive hearing loss on sound localization. DESIGN: Sound signals were presented from different angles, and the participant's responses were measured using an eye-tracking device. For validation, a comparison of responses to visual stimuli was performed. To test the clinical application of this method, a mild conductive hearing loss was simulated, and the impact of this change on sound localization was measured. STUDY SAMPLE:

Sound Localization Strategies in Three Predators.

In this paper, we compare some of the neural strategies for sound localization and encoding interaural time differences (ITDs) in three predatory species of Reptilia, alligators, barn owls and geckos. Birds and crocodilians are sister groups among the extant archosaurs, while geckos are lepidosaurs. Despite the similar organization of their auditory systems, archosaurs and lizards use different strategies for encoding the ITDs that underlie localization of sound in azimuth. Barn owls encode ITD information using a place map, which is composed of neurons serving as labeled lines tuned for prefe

Evaluation of smartphone sound measurement applications.

This study reports on the accuracy of smartphone sound measurement applications (apps) and whether they can be appropriately employed for occupational noise measurements. A representative sample of smartphones and tablets on various platforms were acquired, more than 130 iOS apps were evaluated but only 10 apps met our selection criteria. Only 4 out of 62 Android apps were tested. The results showed two apps with mean differences of 0.07 dB (unweighted) and -0.52 dB (A-weighted) from the reference values. Two other apps had mean differences within ±2 dB. The study suggests that certain apps ma

Low-power wearable respiratory sound sensing.

Building upon the findings from the field of automated recognition of respiratory sound patterns, we propose a wearable wireless sensor implementing on-board respiratory sound acquisition and classification, to enable continuous monitoring of symptoms, such as asthmatic wheezing. Low-power consumption of such a sensor is required in order to achieve long autonomy. Considering that the power consumption of its radio is kept minimal if transmitting only upon (rare) occurrences of wheezing, we focus on optimizing the power consumption of the digital signal processor (DSP).
