Space travel: bringing medical discoveries down to Earth.

Space travel has necessitated intensive study of certain physical conditions, notably cardiovascular deconditioning, motion sickness, musculoskeletal atrophy and psychological isolation. Benefits of this research are beginning to be available to terrestrial medicine, for example in research on osteoporosis and motion sickness. Other space technology of benefit to medicine includes diagnostic and therapeutic devices, transmission of medical data and satellite communications. A permanently inhabited space station is planned for the 1990s and further research into isolation, occupational hazards

[Effect of Gastrodia on rotation induced motion sickness in mice].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Gastrodia on motion sickness induced by rotation in mice. METHOD: Clockwise and anticlockwise accelerated rotations up to 180 degrees/s for 10 min were used to induce symptoms of motion sickness such as condition taste aversion (CTA), decrease of spontaneous locomotion and impaired ability of space identification in water-maze. RESULT: Gastrodia could improve the response of CTA, increase spontaneous locomotion, and enhance the ability of learning and memory in water-maze in mice after the rotation. CONCLUSION: Symptoms of motion sickness induced by rotat

Motion sickness and vestibular hypersensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness is poorly understood, although it has been recognized for years as debilitating. Vestibular function is required for motion sickness to occur, but motion sickness can also be brought on without body motion. The aim of this study was to see if there was a correlation between caloric response and motion sickness susceptibility. DESIGN: One experiment was a prospective study carried out on 200 patients. A second prospective study was carried out on 121 patients. SETTING: Patients referred to our tertiary/quaternary care dizziness clinic. METHODS: In experiment 1, cal

Prevalence, Predictors, and Prevention of Motion Sickness in Zero-G Parabolic Flights.

INTRODUCTION: Zero-G parabolic flight reproduces the weightlessness of space for short periods. However, motion sickness may affect some fliers. The aim was to assess the extent of this problem and to find possible predictors and modifying factors. METHODS: Airbus zero-G flights consist of 31 parabolas performed in blocks. Each parabola consisted of 20 s of 0 g sandwiched by 20 s of hypergravity of 1.5-1.8 g. The survey covered N = 246 person-flights (193 men, 53 women), ages (M ± SD) 36.0 ± 11.3 yr. An anonymous questionnaire included motion sickness rating (1 = OK to 6 = vomiting), Motion S

A misconception of motion sickness leads to false therapeutic expectations.

The emetic chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), located in the area postrema of the medulla oblongata, is generally believed to be indispensable for the vomiting in motion sickness and, by extrapolation, also in space sickness. Accordingly, it has been postulated that a "motion vomiting substance" is secreted into the cerebrospinal fluid in the emetic process. Furthermore, certain therapeutic measures against motion sickness are aimed at preventing the presumed chemical stimulation of the CTZ. This concept originated from laboratory experiments in which ablation of the area postrema protected som

Asymmetric otolith function and increased susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to variations in gravitoinertial acceleration level.

Von Baumgarten and his colleagues (23,24) have suggested that asymmetries in otolith function between the left and right labyrinths may result from differences in otoconial mass and could play a role in space motion sickness. Such asymmetries would be centrally compensated for under terrestrial conditions but on exposure to weightlessness the persisting central compensation would produce a central imbalance that could lead to motion sickness. We have used ocular counterrolling as a way of measuring the relative "efficiency" of the left and right otoliths and have compared the ocular counterrol

[Motion sickness].

Motion sickness is a general term covering sea-sickness, car-sickness, air-sickness, and space-sickness. Symptoms can occur when a person is exposed to unfamiliar movement whether real or simulated. Despite progress in the technology and comfort of modern transportation (planes, boats, and overland vehicles), a great number of travelers still experience motion sickness. Bouts are characterized by an initial phase of mild discomfort followed by neurologic and gastro-intestinal manifestations. The delay in onset depends on specific circumstances and individual susceptibility. Attacks are precipi

Bioavailability of intranasal promethazine dosage forms in dogs.

Intramuscular promethazine (PMZ) is used aboard the US Space Shuttle to ameliorate symptoms of space motion sickness. Bioavailability after an oral dose of PMZ during space flight is thought to be impaired because of gastrointestinal disturbances associated with weightlessness and space motion sickness. In an attempt to find an alternative dosage form for use in space, we evaluated two intranasal (i.n.) dosage forms of PMZ in dogs for absorption and bioavailability relative to that of an equivalent intramuscular dose. Promethazine (5 mg kg-1) was administered as two intranasal dosage forms and

Association of Lymphatic Fluid Volume in the Inner Ear of Beagle Dogs with the Susceptibility to Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to quantify total lymphatic fluid spaces of the inner ears volumetrically in the dog in order to find a correlation between the lymphatic volume of the inner ears and motion sickness susceptibility. METHODS: A total of 16 healthy adult Beagle dogs were used to delineate the lymphatic fluid spaces of inner ears by magnetic resonance imag- ing with a 3-dimensional-constructive interference steady-state sequence. Manual segmentation was applied for 3-dimensional reconstruction and volumetric quantification of total lymphatic space. The susceptibility of Beagle dogs t

Spatial orientation in weightlessness and readaptation to earth's gravity.

Unusual vestibular responses to head movements in weightlessness may produce spatial orientation illusions and symptoms of space motion sickness. An integrated set of experiments was performed during Spacelab 1, as well as before and after the flight, to evaluate responses mediated by the otolith organs and semicircular canals. A variety of measurements were used, including eye movements, postural control, perception of orientation, and susceptibility to space sickness.

Nuclear medicine evaluation of motion sickness and medications on gastric emptying time.

Diminished gastric motility and lack of bowel sounds have been observed in astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle (4). In this study subjects were given scopolamine 0.6 mg with d-amphetamine 5 mg with and without neostigmine 15 mg. Neostigmine 15 mg alone was also compared with placebo for effect on gastric emptying time. In an additional test, subjects performed head movements in a rotating chair to an end-point of motion sickness short of vomiting. Ten ounces of isotonic saline containing 1 mCl of Tc 99mDPTA was ingested 2 h after the medications and immediately after rotation. The counts from

Vestibular problems in diving and in space.

On firm ground our sense of balance is supplied by super abundant input from several sensoric sources. In other environments insufficient or conflicting input may cause vestibular problems. In diving, vertigo may be caused by a variety of influences, like sensory deprivation, optokinetic illusion, asymmetric vestibular stimulation, inner ear barotrauma, decompression sickness, breathing gas toxicity, high pressure neurological syndrome, sea sickness and intense noise. During space flight some of the mentioned mechanisms may contribute to vestibular problems, although space motion sickness bein

Motion sickness in amphibians.

We explored the question of whether amphibians get motion sickness by exposing anurans (frogs) and urodeles (salamanders) to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. Animals were fed before flight, and the presence of vomitus in their containers after flight was used to indicate motion-induced emesis. None of the species that we studied vomited during the 8 to 10 parabolas of each flight. However, at least one specimen from each of the anuran species Rana rugosa, Rana nigromaculata, Hyla japonica, and Rhacophorus schlegelii vomited in a period of 0.5 to 42 h after flight. Some sp

Change in susceptibility to vestibular-visual conflict sickness in monkeys by repeated exposure.

Squirrel monkeys, susceptible to the vestibular-visual conflict sickness in pitch (with frank vomiting), were subjected to repeated exposure to pitch conflict in various modes and in a randomly mixed order (30 min daily, for 10 consecutive days). Immediately after the training, a significant decline in susceptibility was found, represented by reduced vomiting rates, reduced sickness scores, reduced salivation and improved regularity of vertical oculomotor responses. Susceptibility at the pre-training level returned when the test was repeated 10 days later. Temporary suppression of pitch confli

Immersed false vertical room. A new motion sickness model.

We evaluated a new model of motion sickness--an enclosure decorated with visual cues to upright which was immersed either inverted or "front"-wall down, in Johnson Space Center's Weightless Environment Training Facility (WETF) pool. This "WETF False Vertical Room" (WFVR) was tested with 19 male and 3 female SCUBA diver subjects, aged 23 to 57, who alternately set clocks mounted near the room's 8 corners and made exaggerated pitch head movements. We found that (1) the WFVR test runs produced motion sickness symptoms in 56% and 36% of subjects in the room-inverted and room-front-down positions,

[Kinetoses].

Motion sickness is a well known nausea and vomiting syndrome whose physical signs occur during travel by sea, automobile, airplane, and space. This review describes current concepts concerning the aetiology, nature and therapy of this common phenomenon. Motion sickness involve a neural mismatch or confusion between the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems. Therapy is directed towards decreasing conflicting sensory input, controlling nausea, and speeding the process of adaptation.

Back to the future-revisiting Skylab data on ocular counter-rolling and motion sickness.

In the early 1970s, nine astronauts participated in missions to the Skylab space station. During two preflight testing sessions at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Pensacola, the amplitudes of their ocular counter-rolling (OCR) during body tilts were assessed to determine if their vestibular functions were within normal ranges. We recently re-evaluated this data to determine asymmetry of each astronaut's OCR response and their OCR slope from sigmoid fits during static leftward and rightward body tilts, which we then compared with their Coriolis sickness susceptibility index (

Autogenic-feedback training exercise is superior to promethazine for control of motion sickness symptoms.

Motion sickness symptoms affect approximately 50% of the crew during space travel and are commonly treated with intramuscular injections of promethazine. The purpose of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of three treatments for motion sickness: intramuscular injections (i.m.) of promethazine, a physiological training method (autogenic-feedback training exercise [AFTE]), and a no-treatment control. An earlier study tested the effects of promethazine on cognitive and psychomotor performance and motion sickness tolerance in a rotating chair. For the present paper, motion sickness toleranc

Rotation at 30 RPM about the A axis after 6 hours in the 10 degree head-down position: effect on susceptibility to motion sickness.

Intraindividual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness were measured in 14 subjects for two conditions of rotation at 30 rpm in the 10 degree head-down position. In one condition, subjects were in the 10 degree head-down position for 6 h prior to the onset of rotation; in the other condition, the delay was only 15 min. In both conditions, there were changes in vital capacity, indicating a redistribution of movable body fluids. Subjects tended to be less susceptible to motion sickness when they were recumbent for 6 h prior to rotation. These results are countervidence for the hypothes

Stroboscopic vision as a treatment for motion sickness: strobe lighting vs. shutter glasses.

INTRODUCTION: Countermeasures (e.g., drugs, training, etc.) designed to combat the problem of space motion sickness (SMS) have had only limited successes. A possible solution for SMS and terrestrial motion sickness may rest in preventing retinal slip via stroboscopic vision. METHODS: There were 32 subjects who participated in a study to investigate the effect of stroboscopic illumination on motion sickness using either a strobe light or liquid crystal display (LCD) shutter glasses. There were 19 subjects who read text and made +/- 20 degrees head movements in the horizontal plane (yaw) at 0.2
