Motion sensitivity in central and peripheral vision.

The visual resolution of motion is important both for indicating the presence of moving objects and for assisting locomotion and spatial orientation. Additionally, motion may enhance the visibility of low contrast features of the environment. For patients with reduced central vision, these functions may be especially significant as the detection of motion is superior to the ability to resolve stationary detail in peripheral vision. The present paper analyzes the effects of specific stimulus variables on motion sensitivity in both central and peripheral vision. Implications of these findings fo

The two sides of spatial representation in neglect patients: the same spatial distortion for different patterns of performance.

Patients with neglect show disorders in horizontal space perception. It has been argued that these disorders may depend on a distortion of space that takes the form of a left-right relaxation of the representational medium that becomes progressively "relaxed" toward the contralesional space and progressively "compressed" toward the ipsilesional space (the space anisometry hypothesis). In the present paper we tested this hypothesis by using the Oppel-Kundt illusion that consists of the perception of a filled space as larger than an empty space of the same size. Two experiments were carried out

Topological structure and the creation of visual complexity.

What does it mean for something to be complex? Fundamentally, complexity is a cue that something is less easily represented by our minds. With this fact in view, complexity becomes a tool: By understanding the factors that lead to various impressions of complexity of a given object, we can effectively "reverse engineer" the underlying form of the mental representation of that object. Here, we use this tool to explore the ways that topological structure relates to perceived complexity - and, thus, whether, or in what way, topological structure may be part of the representation of objects. In tw

Two-Dimensional Perisaccadic Visual Mislocalization in Rhesus Macaque Monkeys.

Perceptual localization of brief, high-contrast perisaccadic visual probes is grossly erroneous. While this phenomenon has been extensively studied in humans, more needs to be learned about its underlying neural mechanisms. This ideally requires running similar behavioral paradigms in animals. However, during neurophysiology, neurons encountered in the relevant sensory and sensory-motor brain areas for visual mislocalization can have arbitrary, noncardinal response field locations. This necessitates using mislocalization paradigms that can work with any saccade direction. Here, we first establ

Alpha Oscillations Are Involved in Localizing Touch on Handheld Tools.

The population of kisspeptin neurons located in the rostral periventricular area of the third ventricle (RP3V) is thought to have a key role in generating the GnRH surge that triggers ovulation. Using a modified GCaMP fibre photometry procedure, we have been able to record the in vivo population activity of RP3VKISS neurons across the estrous cycle of female mice. A marked increase in GCaMP activity was detected beginning on the afternoon of proestrus that lasted in total for 13±1 hr. This was comprised of slow baseline oscillations with a period of 91±4 min associated with high-frequency rapi

Influence of panoramic cues during prolonged roll-tilt adaptation on the percept of vertical.

The percept of vertical, which mainly relies on vestibular and visual cues, is known to be affected after sustained whole-body roll tilt, mostly at roll positions adjacent to the position of adaptation. Here we ask whether the viewing of panoramic visual cues during the adaptation further influences the percept of the visual vertical. Participants were rotated in the frontal plane to a 90° clockwise tilt position, which was maintained for 4-minutes. During this period, the subject was either kept in darkness, or viewed panoramic pictures that were either veridical (aligned with gravity) or ori

Altered visual and haptic verticality perception in posterior cortical atrophy and Alzheimer's disease.

There is increasing theoretical and empirical support for the brain combining multisensory information to determine the direction of gravity and hence uprightness. A fundamental part of the process is the spatial transformation of sensory signals between reference frames: eye-centred, head-centred, body-centred, etc. The question 'Am I the right way up?' posed by a patient with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) suggests disturbances in upright perception, subsequently investigated in PCA and typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD) based on what looks or feels upright. Participants repeatedly aligned

Following the gold trail: Reward influences on spatial exploration in neglect.

Spatial attention is guided by the perceived salience and relevance of objects in the environment, a process considered to depend on a broad parieto-frontal cortical network. Signals arising from the limbic and nigrostriatal pathways conveying affective and motivational cues are also known to modulate visual selection, but the nature of this contribution and its relation to spatial attention remain unclear. We investigated the role of reward information in 15 patients with left hemispatial neglect and 15 control subjects playing multiple rounds of a virtual foraging game. Participants' explora

Decreased grey matter in the postural control network is associated with lateral flexion of the trunk in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of central networks, particularly of those responsible for integrating multimodal afferents in a spatial reference frame, were proposed in the pathophysiology of lateral trunk flexion in Parkinson's disease (PD). Knowledge about the underlying neuroanatomical structures is limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if decreased focal grey matter (GM) is associated with trunk flexion to the side and if the revealed GM clusters correlate with a disturbed perception of verticality in PD. METHODS: 37 PD patients with and without lateral trunk flexion were recruited. Standardized p

Space and Time in the Obsessive-Compulsive Phenomenon.

Following the tradition of researchers of the phenomenological-anthropological school such as Straus, von Gebsattel, Tellenbach, and Blankenburg, the author attempts to approach the obsessive-compulsive disorder from a phenomenological perspective. This means setting aside any previous ideas about the phenomenon in question, including genetic, neurobiological, and clinical-statistical considerations. He takes as his starting point a clinically typical case he studied and treated with psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy for many years. After delving briefly into the interesting psychodyna

The independent detection of motion energy and counterchange: flexibility in motion detection.

Motion perception is determined by changing patterns of neural activation initiated by spatiotemporal changes in stimulus features. Motion specified by 1st-order motion energy entails neural patterns that are initiated by spatiotemporal changes in luminance, whereas motion specified by counterchange entails oppositely signed changes in neural activation that can be initiated by spatiotemporal changes in any feature. A constraint in furthering this distinction is that motion energy and counterchange are co-specified by most visual stimuli. In the current study, counterchange was isolated for st

Visuospatial deficits of dyslexic children.

BACKGROUND: The visuospatial deficit is recognized as typical for dyslexia only in some definitions. However problems with visuospatial orientation may manifest themselves as difficulties with letter identification or the memorizing and recalling of sign sequences, something frequently experienced by dyslexics. MATERIAL/METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 62 children with developmental dyslexia. The control group consisted of 67 pupils with no diagnosed deficits, matched to the clinical group in terms of age. We used the Clock Drawing Test (CDT), the Spatial Span subtest from the Wec

Searching in dynamic displays: effects of configural predictability and spatiotemporal continuity.

A visual search task was used to probe how well attention can operate over a dynamically changing visual display. Participants searched for a target item among an array of distractor items while the items either shifted location several times per second or remained stationary. Not surprisingly, Experiment 1 showed that shifting display items slowed search. However, search was faster if the shift preserved the global, configural structure of the display. The results of Experiment 2 suggest that the benefit of maintaining configural structure comes from improved spatial predictability: Knowing w

Ames's window in proprioception.

When holding a small-scale model of Ames's trapezoidal window with the arms fully extended, several observers experience a striking proprioceptive distortion (eg one hand appears farther from the other, or one arm appears longer than the other). However, data from a matching experiment suggest that the proprioceptive misalignment of the hands is, in fact, rather less than the apparent slant of the window when this is not held. This finding argues against a 'visual-capture' account, supports an explanation in terms of bimodal integrative processes, and underscores the importance of supplementin

Judgments of exocentric direction in large-scale space.

Judgments of exocentric direction are quite common, especially when judging where others are looking or pointing. To investigate these judgments in large-scale space, observers were shown two targets in a large open field and were asked to judge the exocentric direction specified by the targets. The targets ranged in egocentric distance from 5 to 20 m with target-to-target angular separations of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Observers judged exocentric direction using two methods: (i) by judging which point on a distant fence appeared collinear with the two targets, and (ii) by orie

Egocenter location in children with strabismus: in the median plane and unchanged by surgery.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that there are spatial localization shifts after horizontal strabismus surgery when a patient performs an open-loop pointing task. After monocular enucleation, an adult will also show a shift in the pointing response. Other studies have shown that in children who underwent enucleation, the egocenter location shifts toward the remaining eye. Is the pointing shift after surgery in children with strabismus the result of a shift in egocenter location? METHODS: Using a modified Roelofs' method for measuring the egocenter, eight children were tested before and a

Contrast perception above threshold is only minimally impaired in human amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a condition occurring at birth, or in early childhood, which affects up to 5% of the population and is characterized by degraded vision in one eye not able to be corrected by spectacles and having no observable lesion in the eye itself. Its cause is therefore uncertain, yet indirect evidence suggests a neural one, very likely in the visual areas of the brain. Ambyopia is usually associated with either a strabismus (eye misalignment) or anisometropia (unequal refractive error). Investigation into its neural basis has involved two approaches: psychophysical research in humans with a

The remapping of peripersonal space after stroke, spinal cord injury and amputation: A PRISMA systematic review.

Peripersonal space (PPS) is the body-centered area where interactions occur and objects can be reached. Its boundaries are dynamic, modulated by ongoing sensorimotor experiences: limb immobilization shrinks PPS, whereas tool use expands it. However, consistent clinical information on PPS alterations remains limited due to methodological heterogeneity, varying types and severities of sensorimotor disorders, and diverse experimental paradigms. This review explores the causal mechanisms of PPS processing by integrating findings from brain-lesioned patients and individuals with body deafferentatio
