Manned interplanetary missions: prospective medical problems.

The present review aimed to suggest approaches to prospective medical problems related to the health maintenance of space crews during future manned interplanetary, particularly Martian, missions up to 2-3 years with a possible stay on a planet with gravity different from that on Earth. The approaches are based on knowledge so far obtained from our analysis of the medical support of long-term orbital flights up to one year, as well as on the consideration of specific conditions of interplanetary missions. These specific conditions include not only long-term exposure to microgravity, but also a

Radiation doses during extreme solar energetic particle events.

Ions and electrons accelerated to high energies during flares and coronal mass ejections at the Sun may escape the solar atmosphere and, guided by the interplanetary magnetic fields, propagate through space to near-Earth locations. These Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) can be detected directly by spacecraft instrumentation. The highest energy SEPs may also propagate through the geomagnetic field and precipitate to low atmospheric heights, producing secondary particles including neutrons and protons that trigger the formation of cosmogenic radionuclides. The space weather effects associated wi

Description of transport codes for space radiation shielding.

Exposure to ionizing radiation in the space environment is one of the hazards faced by crews in space missions. As space radiations traverse spacecraft, habitat shielding, or tissues, their energies and compositions are altered by interactions with the shielding. Modifications to the radiation fields arise from atomic interactions of charged particles with orbital electrons and nuclear interactions leading to projectile and target fragmentation, including secondary particles such as neutrons, protons, mesons, and nuclear recoils. The transport of space radiation through shielding can be simula

The role of nuclear fragmentations in high energy transfers to a micro-object exposed to primary space radiation.

This paper describes events of anomalously high energy transfer to a micro-object by fragments of nuclei generated in nuclear interactions in the environment on board a spacecraft in flight in low-Earth orbit. An algorithm has been developed that allows for the calculation of the absorbed energy from one or more fragments - products of nuclear interaction. With this algorithm the energy distributions for a spherical micro-volume in an aqueous medium were calculated. And the resulting absorbed energy spectra from nuclear fragments and from primary cosmic rays were compared. The role of nuclear

Establishing Sterility Assurance for Bacillus canaveralius 29669 Spores Under High Heat Exposure.

The ever-increasing complexity in critical spacecraft hardware and materials has led to the development of new microbial reduction procedures as well as to changes in established processes such as heat microbial reduction (HMR). In the space biology field of Planetary Protection, 500°C for 0.5 s is the current HMR recommendation to reduce microorganisms from flight hardware. However, more studies are needed to effectively determine the microbial reduction capability of high-temperature (more than 200°C), short-duration (under 30 s) heat exposures. One of the many recent microbial reduction bio

Insight into wave propagation in polyimide films and resistive grid sandwich structures towards a hybrid monitoring of hypervelocity impact.

Micro-Meteoroid and Orbital Debris pose a significant threat to the safe operation of orbiting spacecraft, potentially leading to mission failure in space exploration. Quantitative characterization of hypervelocity impact (HVI) is crucial to ensure the safety and successful completion of on-orbit missions. Firstly, this study designed a three-layer sandwich structure of polyimide film with orthogonally laid resistive wires, combined with piezoelectric and resistive wire sensors, for the simultaneous acquisition of acoustic emission (AE) signals generated by HVI and measurement of perforation d

Carbon Nanocomposites in Aerospace Technology: A Way to Protect Low-Orbit Satellites.

Recent advancements in space technology and reduced launching cost led companies, defence and government organisations to turn their attention to low Earth orbit (LEO) and very low Earth orbit (VLEO) satellites, for they offer significant advantages over other types of spacecraft and present an attractive solution for observation, communication and other tasks. However, keeping satellites in LEO and VLEO presents a unique set of challenges, in addition to those typically associated with exposure to space environment such as damage from space debris, thermal fluctuations, radiation and thermal

Demonstration of 100 Gbps coherent free-space optical communications at LEO tracking rates.

Free-space optical communications are poised to alleviate the data-flow bottleneck experienced by spacecraft as traditional radio frequencies reach their practical limit. While enabling orders-of-magnitude gains in data rates, optical signals impose much stricter pointing requirements and are strongly affected by atmospheric turbulence. Coherent detection methods, which capitalize fully on the available degrees of freedom to maximize data capacity, have the added complication of needing to couple the received signal into single-mode fiber. In this paper we present results from a coherent 1550

Fiber backscatter under increasing exposure to ionizing radiation.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will measure gravitational waves by utilizing inter-satellite laser links between three triangularly-arranged spacecraft in heliocentric orbits. Each spacecraft will house two separate optical benches and needs to establish a phase reference between the two optical benches which requires a bidirectional optical connection, e.g. a fiber connection. The sensitivity of the reference interferometers, and thus of the gravitational wave measurement, could be hampered by backscattering of laser light within optical fibers. It is not yet clear if the backs

Simulation degradation datasets for health prognosis of a control moment gyroscope's flywheel system.

A Control moment gyroscope (CMG) is an attitude control actuator widely used in spacecraft. As a consequence of the continuous high-speed rotation to output stable angular momentum, CMGs are at a higher risk of degradation failure, which could lead to a loss of spacecraft control. However, implementing health prognosis for CMGs is challenging due to the high cost associated with conducting comprehensive lifetime tests. Moreover, environment differences between space and ground make data generated with simulation in the space environment more valuable than data from ground experiments for healt

Successful kinetic impact into an asteroid for planetary defence.

Although no known asteroid poses a threat to Earth for at least the next century, the catalogue of near-Earth asteroids is incomplete for objects whose impacts would produce regional devastation1,2. Several approaches have been proposed to potentially prevent an asteroid impact with Earth by deflecting or disrupting an asteroid1-3. A test of kinetic impact technology was identified as the highest-priority space mission related to asteroid mitigation1. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is a full-scale test of kinetic impact technology. The mission's target asteroid was Dimo

Comparison of cubesat and microsat catastrophic failures in function of radiation and debris impact risk.

Occurrence level comparison of catastrophic failures due to radiation effects on electronic components or collision with space debris are studied in two types of satellites: cubesats and microsats. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) case studies are proposed, and the level of catastrophic failure occurrence is quantified for the same mission duration. The variation in the occurrence of failures is studied and there is a determination of which is more likely. Emphasis is placed on examining how an increase in space debris would affect the reliability of future space missions.

Assessment of the probability of microbial contamination for sample return from Martian moons II: The fate of microbes on Martian moons.

This paper presents a case study of microbe transportation in the Mars-satellites system. We examined the spatial distribution of potential impact-transported microbes on the Martian moons using impact physics by following a companion study (Fujita et al., in this issue). We used sterilization data from the precede studies (Patel et al., 2018; Summers, 2017). We considered that the microbes came mainly from the Zunil crater on Mars, which was formed during 1.0-0.1 Ma. We found that 70-80% of the microbes are likely to be dispersed all over the moon surface and are rapidly sterilized due to sol

Influence of impulse noise on noise dosimetry measurements on the International Space Station.

Objective: Acoustic dosimetry (AD) data collected on the International Space Station (ISS) were analysed to investigate the impact of impulse noise on crew noise exposure.Design: The noise exposure during work (LAeq16h) and sleep (LAeq8h) time, and the number of impulses >115 dB peak that occurred during each measurement activity, were calculated from the AD data. Two parametric studies were used to estimate the effect of 1) impulses in the original data set, and 2) hypothetical impulses of different levels, durations and quantities on LAeq16h.Study sample: Twelve sets of AD data collected on

The environment, remote sensing, and malaria control.

Results of studies in California, Mexico and Belize demonstrate the value of remote sensing technology for studying vector-borne diseases. These studies have also shown that it is necessary to fully define the environmental factors associated with the presence of vectors and disease transmission, and to be able to detect these environmental factors with image data. These studies, and other published reports, are demonstrating many potential uses of remotely sensed data in managing and targeting vector and disease control measures.

Dual-Functional Photonic Metacoating Integrating Fluorescence Thermometry and High-Performance Space Radiative Cooling.

Fluorescence thermometry offers a non-contact strategy for early detection of thermal instabilities on complex spacecraft surfaces, enabling reliable in-orbit temperature mapping. However, simultaneously achieving high-sensitivity fluorescence thermometry and efficient space radiative cooling remains challenging, as enhanced visible absorption improves thermometric response but increases solar heating. Here, we address this trade-off through a material-structure co-design strategy by developing an Eu-doped ZrO2 submicrosphere metacoating that integrates space radiative cooling with fluorescenc

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Rays effects on fungal materials: towards biotechnological radiation protection for space habitats.

PURPOSE: Human space exploration is on an upward trajectory with new space stations being manufactured for scientific experiments, industrial development, and space tourism. These spacecraft in LEO and MEO will take advantage of Earth's magnetic field for radiation protection. Astronauts on the International Space Station receive an average radiation dose of 25 µSV/hour; around 250 times greater than the average sea level dose rate. Solar activity can create an increased level of radiation that requires astronauts to stay sheltered while the solar storm hits. The Lunar Gateway, another space s

[Water conditioning in extreme conditions].

Comparative analysis of different water conditioning technologies, i.e. supplementing desalted water with certain physiologically important minerals, has been especially concerned with determination of those methods and systems that will fit best the requirements to water processing and mineralization in pressurized habitable modules, spacecraft compartments specifically. It has been concluded that potable water mineralization units designed for these conditions should incorporate filters made of artificial granular materials and take advantage of the osmotic water mineralization technology.

Astronauts eye-head coordination dysfunction over the course of twenty space shuttle flights.

BACKGROUND: Coordination of motor activity is adapted to Earth's gravity (1 g). However, during space flight the gravity level changes from Earth gravity to hypergravity during launch, and to microgravity (0 g) in orbit. This transition between gravity levels may alter the coordination between eye and head movements in gaze performance. OBJECTIVE: We explored how weightlessness during space flight altered the astronauts' eye-head coordination (EHC) with respect to flight day and target eccentricity. METHODS: Thirty-four astronauts of 20 Space Shuttle missions had to acquire visual targets wi

Water and microbial monitoring technologies towards the near future space exploration.

Space exploration is demanding longer lasting human missions and water resupply from Earth will become increasingly unrealistic. In a near future, the spacecraft water monitoring systems will require technological advances to promptly identify and counteract contingent events of waterborne microbial contamination, posing health risks to astronauts with lowered immune responsiveness. The search for bio-analytical approaches, alternative to those applied on Earth by cultivation-dependent methods, is pushed by the compelling need to limit waste disposal and avoid microbial regrowth from analytica
