Spatial memory in nonhuman primates implanted with the subdural pharmacotherapy device.

This study investigated the possible influence of the Subdural Pharmacotherapy Device (SPD) on spatial memory in 3 adult, male bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata). The device was implanted in and above the subdural/subarachnoid space and cranium overlaying the right parietal/frontal cortex: a circuitry involved in spatial memory processing. A large test chamber, equipped with four baited and four non-baited food-ports at different locations, was used: reaches into empty food ports were counted as spatial memory errors. In this study of within-subject design, before SPD implantation (control) the

Age-related spatial working memory deficits in homing pigeons (Columba livia).

The hippocampus is particularly susceptible to age-related degeneration that, like hippocampal lesions, is thought to lead to age-related decline in spatial memory and navigation. Lesions to the avian hippocampal formation (HF) also result in impaired spatial memory and navigation, but the relationship between aging and HF-dependent spatial cognition is unknown. To investigate possible age-related decline in avian spatial cognition, the current study investigated spatial working memory performance in older homing pigeons (10+ years of age). Pigeons completed a behavioral procedure nearly ident

Spatial memory and learning deficits after experimental pneumococcal meningitis in mice.

Survivors of bacterial meningitis frequently suffer from long-term sequelae, particularly from learning and memory deficits. For this reason, spatial memory and learning was studied in a mouse model of ceftriaxone-treated Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis. Persistent deficits of spatial learning despite normal motor function were observed in mice infected with 10(4) colony-forming units (CFU) in 25 microl of saline into the right forebrain in comparison to mice treated with an equal amount of saline. Survivors of meningitis performed significantly worse in memorizing a hidden platform in a M

Hand-centred coding of target location in visuo-spatial working memory.

The aim of the present experiment was to determine the frame of reference used to encode a visually specified target location, in a simple, visuo-spatial short-term-memory task, using delayed manual pointing. Subjects were required to remember the location of a single, visually presented stimulus, over delays of 3 and 30 s, and to recall its location by pointing to it with the tip of a stylus with eyes closed. There were two starting positions for the hand: one near the body, proximal to the target area, the other far from the body, i.e., beyond the target area. Two groups of twelve subjects p

Fimbria-fornix lesions impair spatial working memory but not cognitive mapping.

Three experiments were designed to evaluate the relative merits of two theories of hippocampal function, the cognitive mapping theory and the working memory theory. Rats were tested in a series of maze tasks that varied in memory requirements. In the experiments that required cognitive mapping but not working memory (Experiments 1 and 3), rats with fimbria-fornix lesions reached stable levels of performance that were as accurate as those of control rats, and they also performed accurately during transfer tests, results demonstrating that they used a cognitive mapping strategy to solve the disc

Effect of Visual and Spatial Working Memory Load on Subitizing and Estimation.

Subitizing-the rapid and accurate enumeration of small quantities-has traditionally been viewed as a pre-attentive process. This study investigates whether subitizing depends on working memory resources using a dual-task paradigm. In two experiments, participants completed enumeration tasks under visual and spatial working memory load, with encoding time manipulated across experiments. Results showed that subitizing range and accuracy declined under spatial load when presentation time was brief, while longer response times emerged under high load when timing was unconstrained. These findings p

Visual Selection Is Spatially Constrained During Working Memory Consolidation.

Working memory consolidation (WMC) is known to consume central attentional resources, impairing performance on subsequent attention-demanding tasks. However, the specific nature of this impairment, particularly its effect on the initial stage of visual selection, remains unclear. The current study tested three competing hypotheses: No-suppression, Pure-temporal-suppression, and Spatial-suppression hypotheses. We used a sequential target-matching task where the inter-stimulus interval (ISI) between a target item and a subsequent probe item was varied to modulate the state of consolidation. Expe

Antidiabetic treatment on memory and spatial learning: From the pancreas to the neuron.

The detrimental effects of constant hyperglycemia on neural function have been quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated in the setting of diabetes mellitus. Some of the hallmark features of diabetic encephalopathy (DE) are impaired synaptic adaptation and diminished spatial learning capacity. Chronic and progressive cognitive dysfunction, perpetuated by several positive feedback mechanisms in diabetic subjects, facilitates the development of early-onset dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Despite the numerous clinical manifestations of DE having been described in detail and their pathophysiolo

The Development of Spatial Memory Analyzed by Means of Ecological Walking Task.

The present study is aimed at investigating the development of spatial memory in pre-school children aged 4-6 years using an ecological walking task with multiple rewards. The participants were to explore an open space in order to find nine rewards placed in buckets arranged in three spatial configurations: a Cross, a 3 × 3 Matrix, and a Cluster composed of three groups of three buckets each. Clear age-related improvements were evident in all the parameters analyzed. In fact, there was a general trend for younger children to display worse performance than the older ones. Moreover, males perfor

Spatial but not object memory impairments in children with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Behavioral dissociations on tests of cognitive abilities are powerful tools that can help define the neuropsychology of developmentally disabling conditions. Animals gestationally exposed to alcohol demonstrate spatial (place) but not object (cue) memory impairments. Whether children with fetal alcohol syndrome demonstrate a similar dissociation has received little attention. In this experiment, 30 Native American children, 15 previously identified with fetal alcohol syndrome and 15 control children, were asked to recall places and objects in a task previously shown to be sensitive to memory s

The effect of electroconvulsive shock and nifedipine on spatial learning and memory in rats.

Several traumatic events including brain contusion, electroconvulsive shock therapy, epileptic seizures and others, may cause short-term retrograde amnesia. In spite of much recent attention, pharmacological treatment of memory impairment has not been fully successful. In the present paper we report on the possible antiamnesic action of the L-type calcium channel blocker, nifedipine. Rats trained in the spatial memory task showed gradual improvement in the escape latency to find the submerged platform. After completion of the learning, they also showed a strong spatial bias toward the place th

The stubborn location: Spatial location is more resistant to removal than non-spatial features in visual working memory.

Working memory (WM) removal serves the critical function of freeing up limited capacity to accommodate task-relevant information. While previous research has primarily focused on the removal of entire objects, it remains unclear whether all features within an object share a common fate during removal. In particular, given the privileged status of spatial location across various cognitive processes, it is an open question whether location information is treated differently during removal. To address this issue, we tested the stubborn-location hypothesis that spatial location would show lower re

The dark side of light exposure: impacts on object recognition memory and spatial associative memory in Wistar rats.

Permanent exposure to constant light (LL) induces arrhythmicity in locomotor activity and impairs spatial memory, an effect that has been associated with reduced hippocampal neurogenesis in rodents. However, it remains unclear whether these memory deficits result from circadian disruption or from a sustained (tonic) effect of light exposure. In this study, rats were exposed to LL during lactation (21 days) to prevent the development of arrhythmicity in adulthood. Subsequently, animals were maintained under a 12:12 light and dark (LD) cycle for 39 days and then re-exposed to LL. Behavior assess

An immersive virtual reality-based object-location memory task reveals spatial long-term memory alterations in Long-COVID.

Object-location memory (OLM) is a type of declarative memory for spatial information and consists of the individual's ability to establish accurate associations between objects and their spatial locations. Long-COVID describes the long-term effects of the COVID-19 disease. Long-COVID patients show medial temporal lobe dysfunction and neuropsychological alterations affecting memory. This study aimed to assess OLM in a group of Long-COVID patients, n=66, and a Control group of healthy individuals with similar age and sex composition, n=21, using an immersive virtual reality (iVR)-based OLM task.

Happiness increases verbal and spatial working memory capacity where sadness does not: Emotion, working memory and executive control.

The effects of emotion on working memory and executive control are often studied in isolation. Positive mood enhances verbal and impairs spatial working memory, whereas negative mood enhances spatial and impairs verbal working memory. Moreover, positive mood enhances executive control, whereas negative mood has little influence. We examined how emotion influences verbal and spatial working memory capacity, which requires executive control to coordinate between holding information in working memory and completing a secondary task. We predicted that positive mood would improve both verbal and sp

Impaired allocentric spatial working memory and intact retrograde memory after thalamic damage caused by thiamine deficiency in rats.

Rats were tested on an allocentric-spatial working-memory task--delayed matching-to-place (DMTP) in a water maze--before and after either pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) or electrolytic lesions of the lateral internal medullary laminae (IML), an area damaged by PTD. DMTP trials consisted of paired swims, with the escape platform in a new location on each trial. PTD rats were impaired at retention delays of 300 s, but not at delays of 4 or 60 s. Rats with IML lesions performed normally at all delays. Both groups displayed normal retention of object-discrimination problems that th

Spatial memory retrieval under cueing in behavioral frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

UNLABELLED: Recent studies indicate that episodic memory is impaired in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), with deficits as severe as those seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Also, both bvFTD and AD patients exhibit executive dysfunction, but the extent to which such dysfunction contributes to memory impairments remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate interactions between executive functions and episodic memory in AD and bvFTD by manipulating executive control in a spatial source memory task. METHODS: Twenty bvFTD patients, 18 AD patients, and 20

Hippocampal astrocytic GAT-3 blockade impairs protein synthesis and spatial memory dynamics.

Astrocytes are essential components of the tripartite synapse, where they modulate synaptic function and plasticity. One key mechanism involves GABA transporter GAT-3, primarily expressed in astrocytes, which helps terminate GABAergic signaling and maintain synaptic homeostasis. We studied the role of hippocampal GAT-3 in spatial memory dynamics using the spatial object recognition (SOR) task in female Wistar rats. GAT-3 inhibition with SNAP-5114 (SNAP) in the dorsal hippocampus impaired memory consolidation without affecting acquisition. This deficit was rescued by prior open field (OF) expos

Validation of Spatial Orientation Screening questionnaire for use in memory clinic patients.

BACKGROUND: Spatial orientation is required for independent mobility in society. Deficits in spatial orientation can be an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and there is a need for brief assessment tools to identify impairments. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the construct and known-group validity of our newly developed Spatial Orientation Screening (SOS) questionnaire. METHODS: We included 132 patients with subjective cognitive decline (n = 16), mild cognitive impairment (n = 32), or all-cause dementia (n = 84) from a memory clinic and a reference g

Dexmedetomidine attenuates postoperative spatial memory impairment after surgery by reducing cytochrome C.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia and surgery can induce perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND). Mitochondrial dysfunction has been proposed to be one of the earliest triggering events in surgery-induced neuronal damage. Dexmedetomidine has been demonstrated to attenuate the impairment of cognition in aged rats induced by surgery in our previous study. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent hepatic apex resection under anesthesia with propofol to clinically mimic human abdominal surgery. The rats were divided into three groups: Control group, Model group and Dexmedetomidine (Dex) group. Cogni
