Spatial health inequalities have often been analyzed in terms of socioeconomic and environmental factors. The present study aimed to evaluate spatial relationships between spatial data collected at different spatial scales. The approach was illustrated using health outcomes (mortality attributable to cancer) initially aggregated to the county level, district socioeconomic covariates, and exposure data modeled on a regular grid. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) was used to quantify spatial relationships. The strongest associations were found when low deprivation was associated with lowe

We investigate spatial confounding in the presence of multivariate disease dependence. Although multiple methods have been proposed for adjusting statistical models to mitigate spatial confounding in estimating regression coefficients, the results on interactions between spatial confounding and multivariate dependence are very limited. We contribute to this domain by investigating spatial confounding from the "analysis" and "data generation" perspectives in a Bayesian coregionalized areal regression model. We derive novel results that show that under spatial confounding, posterior variance inf

Domestic dogs and cats are potentially effective sentinel populations for monitoring occurrence and spread of Lyme disease. Few studies have evaluated the public health utility of sentinel programmes using geo-analytic approaches. Confirmed Lyme disease cases diagnosed by physicians and ticks submitted by veterinarians to the West Virginia State Health Department were obtained for 2014-2016. Ticks were identified to species, and only Ixodes scapularis were incorporated in the analysis. Separate ordinary least squares (OLS) and spatial lag regression models were conducted to estimate the associ

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is expanding in Brazil and in other South American countries, a process that has been associated with the urbanization of the disease. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal distribution of VL in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and identifies the areas with higher risks of transmission.
METHODOLOGY: An ecological study with spatial and time series analyzes of new confirmed cases of VL notified to the Brazilian Notifiable Disease Information System between 2002 and 2013, considering the 12 mesoregions of Minas Gerais. Two complementary methodol

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain serious public health problems particularly in urban environments in the USA. Despite accumulating research into the role of aggregate rates of crime in shaping rates of STIs, few studies account for spatial dependence in the structure of geographical data. Using multiple spatial analysis methodologies, the following study investigated spatial patterns in community area rates of violent, drug, and property crimes and rates of infection of gonorrhea and chlamydia in 77 community areas in Chicago. Moran's I analyses confirmed global spatial dependenc

In the modern global context of interconnected populations, the recent emergence of infectious diseases involves complex interactions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial correlations between urban characteristics, taking into account the socio-ecological aspects, and the emergence of infectious diseases. Using exploratory spatial data analysis and spatial regression between the infectious disease emergence data and 14 urban characteristics, we analyzed 225 spatial units in South Korea, where there was a re-emergence of measles and a 2015 outbreak of Middle East Respiratory

Zoonotic diseases affect resource-poor tropical communities disproportionately, and are linked to human use and modification of ecosystems. Disentangling the socio-ecological mechanisms by which ecosystem change precipitates impacts of pathogens is critical for predicting disease risk and designing effective intervention strategies. Despite the global "One Health" initiative, predictive models for tropical zoonotic diseases often focus on narrow ranges of risk factors and are rarely scaled to intervention programs and ecosystem use. This study uses a participatory, co-production approach to ad

West Nile fever is an emergent disease in Europe. The objective of this study was to conduct a predictive risk mapping of West Nile Virus (WNV) circulation in Spain based on historical data of WNV circulation. Areas of Spain with evidence of WNV circulation were mapped based on data from notifications to the surveillance systems and a literature review. A logistic regression-based spatial model was used to assess the probability of WNV circulation. Data were analyzed at municipality level. Mean temperatures of the period from June to October, presence of wetlands and presence of Special Protec

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested neural disruption and reorganization in young and older adults with alcohol use disorders (AUD). However, it remains unclear at what age and when in the progression of AUD changes in brain functioning might occur.
METHODS: Alcohol use disordered (n = 15) and nonabusing (n = 19) boys and girls aged 15 to 17 were recruited from local high schools. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected after a minimum of 5 days' abstinence as participants performed spatial working memory and simple motor tasks.
RESULTS: Adolescents with AUD showed

BACKGROUND: Identifying predictors that contribute to geographical disparities in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is necessary. This study assesses the spatial relationship between condom availability to locations of STIs in order to better understand these geographical disparities.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a condom availability audit among potential condom-selling establishments. New gonorrhoea and chlamydia cases in 2011 (n=6034) and HIV infection cases from 2006 to 2011 (n=565) were collected by census tract in St Louis, Missouri. 829 potential condom-selling establishments particip

Colorectal cancer remains a major public health concern in Arkansas and across the United States, disproportionately affecting rural and vulnerable populations. Beyond established lifestyle and genetic factors, environmental exposures, particularly agricultural chemicals, are increasingly recognized as potential contributors. In this ecological study, we screened 133 county-level estimated air pollutants to identify candidates associated with colorectal cancer incidence rates, focusing on Arkansas due to its agricultural economy and widespread herbicide use. Using publicly available environmen

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown inconsistent or even contradictory results for some risk factors associated with HIV infection among drug users, and these may be partially explained by geographical variations.
METHODS: Data were collected from 11 methadone clinics in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture from 2004 to 2012. A non-spatial logistical regression model and a geographically weighted logistic regression model were fitted to analyze the association between HIV infection and specific factors at the individual level.
RESULTS: This study enrolled 6,458 patients. The prevalence

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a significant public health problem in China. Previous spatial epidemiological studies have helped understand the epidemiology of animal and human rabies in China. However, quantification of effects derived from relevant factors was insufficient and complex spatial interactions were not well articulated, which may lead to non-negligible bias. In this study, we aimed to quantify the role of socio-economic and climate factors in the spatial distribution of human rabies to support decision making pertaining to rabies control in China.

BACKGROUND: As of 2024, an estimated 40.8 million people worldwide were living with HIV, making HIV/AIDS one of the most pressing global public health challenges. Accurate identification of the factors shaping the HIV/AIDS epidemic is essential for developing targeted prevention and control strategies.
METHODS: This study uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to examine spatially varying associations between HIV/AIDS prevalence and three domains-socioeconomic conditions, educational attainment, and healthcare capacity-using Kunming, China, as a c

INTRODUCTION: Evidence of an association between areal ALS risk and population density has been previously reported. We aim to examine ALS spatial incidence in Ireland using small areas, to compare this analysis with our previous analysis of larger areas and to examine the associations between population density, social deprivation and ALS incidence.
METHODS: Residential area social deprivation has not been previously investigated as a risk factor for ALS. Using the Irish ALS register, we included all cases of ALS diagnosed in Ireland from 1995-2013. 2006 census data was used to calculate age

Diabetes is a global public health concern, with India emerging as the largest contributor to this burden. In India, there is an uneven socio-economic and regional distribution of diabetes, but so far it has only been explored at the state level. Thus, this study was done to identify the geo-spatial distribution of elevated blood sugar levels at the district level in India, including determining any macro-level predictors associated with it. A secondary data analysis was conducted using NFHS-5 (2019 - 2021) district-level data, which was freely available in the public domain. This geospatial a

A growing body of literature examines urban water sustainability with increasing evidence that locally-based physical and social spatial interactions contribute to water use. These studies however are based on single-city analysis and often fail to consider whether these interactions occur more generally. We examine a multi-city comparison using a common set of spatially-explicit water, socioeconomic, and biophysical data. We investigate the relative importance of variables for explaining the variations of single family residential (SFR) water uses at Census Block Group (CBG) and Census Tract

We reanalyzed data from a phase III trial for the killed oral cholera vaccine to test two hypotheses: there will be a greater impact of the vaccine in areas where there is a low force of infection, and the spatial pattern of disease transmission will change after a mass vaccination campaign. Spatial regression was used to test these hypotheses accounting for spatial heterogeneity in disease and vaccine coverage. The results of the analyses confirm both hypotheses. The paper also shows how spatial analysis can be used to understand the impact of vaccination when there are spatially heterogeneou

BACKGROUND: Rapid sociodemographic changes in India, including rising female education, workforce participation, urbanization, and changing gender norms, have contributed to delayed childbearing. Despite declining fertility, limited evidence exists on the district-level geographic variations and determinants of delayed motherhood (childbirth at age ≥35) in India. This study applies multilevel and geospatial analyses to examine the distribution, determinants, and district-level spatial clustering of delayed motherhood using National Family Health Survey data.
METHODS: This study employed multi
