A counterbalanced within-subjects design was employed to assess the acute effects of alcohol ingestion on thirst and fluid intake and to relate these effects to the dehydration known to result from acute ingestion of alcohol. Fourteen male nonalcoholic social drinkers between the ages of 18 and 30 consumed 0.8 gm of alcohol/kg body weight during one experimental session and a placebo (0.05 gm/kg) of equal volume during the other. During the 90-minute drinking period and for one hour both before and afterward, urine specimens were collected. After the drinking period, blood alcohol levels and u

Two mannikins, one designed to float and one designed to sink, were used to examine the ways in which human bodies move in a river. The floating mannikin was used to examine the movement of a body floating downstream on the surface and to determined the flow patterns of surface currents through bends in the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, GA. The submerged mannikin was constructed to have a specific gravity of a deceased person (over a range of specific gravities) and was used to examine the motion of a body immediately upon entering the water. The submerged mannikin also was used to examine m

Here we describe GATO (gravity, age, thermoregulation, and oxygenation) hypothesis (or a "Baby Astronaut" hypothesis) which we suggest to explain synergistic effect of these factors on the motor system. Taken separately, microgravity (in spaceflight, G~0), the early age, heat and hypoxia exert identical effect on the motor system. We posit that synergy of these factors originate from their synchronicity during intrauterine immersion (analog microgravity) of the fetus in warm hypoxic condition. We further postulate three successive motor adaptive strategies, driven lifelong by gravity as the ke

BACKGROUND: Hyperammonemia is a critical condition sometimes associated with severe neurological symptoms and cerebral edema. Quantitative CT-scan may help directly assess the impact of ammonia levels on brain structures, offering the potential to improve patient management.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, proof-of-concept study on patients admitted to the ICU with ammonemia >100 µmol/L who underwent one or more brain CT-scans. Weight, volume, and specific gravity of brain structures were assessed using BrainView software (Institut National des Télécommunications).
RESULTS: Seven pati

BACKGROUND: Lead is a toxic nonessential metal with widespread exposure starting in utero. Lead has been reclassified in 2004 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer Working Group from a "possible" to a "probable" human carcinogen. Lead may be a facilitative or permissive carcinogen, which means that lead may permit or augment the genotoxic effects of other exposures.
METHODS: This population-based study in Wisconsin gathered survey data and home-collected urine specimens from 246 women, ages 20 to 69 years, with incident invasive breast cancer identified from the Wisconsin state r

We devised a diagnosis and management algorithm for acute onset of central diabetes insipidus (CDI), and conducted a retrospective evaluation of its efficacy. Fourteen patients admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) over a three year period were diagnosed with acute CDI secondary to various brain injuries. All patients were treated as per the algorithm guidelines. The initial dose of aqueous vasopressin ranged from 0.25 to 1.0 mU/kg/h. Low sodium content solution (0-0.5 normal saline) was used to replace urine output in excess of 3 ml/kg/h and for maintenance fluid therapy. The t

AIMS: To assess whether workers under significant thermal stress necessarily dehydrated during their exposure and whether "involuntary dehydration" was inevitable, as supported by ISO 9866 and other authorities. Other objectives were to quantify sweat rates against recommended occupational limits, to develop a dehydration protocol to assist with managing heat exposures, and to understand the role of meal breaks on extended shifts in terms of fluid replacement.
METHODS: A field investigation to examine the fluid consumption, sweat rates, and changes in the hydration state of industrial workers

Cystinuria is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by an impaired transport of cystine and dibasic aminoacids, lysine, arginine and ornithine in the proximal renal tubule and in the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Recurrent cystine nephrolithiasis is the main clinical feature. Mutations in SLC3A1 and/or SLC7A9 genes, which are encoding respectively the rBAT and the b(0,+)AT proteins of the amino acid transport system, are responsible of this disorder thus inducing a high dibasic amino acid excretion. Diagnostic is based on stone analysis by infrared spectroscopy or mic

The sodium requirement of adult cats for maintenance was determined using a randomized block design of eight dietary sodium treatments (0.1, 0.4, 0.5, 0.66, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 or 2.0 g Na/kg in a casein-lactalbumin-based purified diet) administered for periods of 4 wk. A total of 35 adult specific-pathogen-free domestic shorthaired cats (26 males and 9 females, 1.5-3 y of age) was given an equilibration diet (2 g Na/kg) for 14 d before assignment (or reassignment) to the treatments. A total of 12 cats (8 males, 4 females) was randomly assigned to the lowest six levels of sodium, and four cats to th

Ten patients [8 men and 2 women, mean age (SD) 37.6 +/- 6.5 years] with psychosis, intermittent hyponatremia, and polydipsia (PIP syndrome) underwent serial determinations at 6:00 AM, 12 noon, 6:00 PM, and 12 midnight of levels of urinary creatinine concentration (UCR), urinary specific gravity (SPGR), and urinary osmolality (UOSM) on 8 consecutive Thursdays. Diurnal variation (p less than 0.015) was present in the case of each parameter of urinary excretion (UCR, SPGR, and UOSM). These three parameters remained very low throughout the day (mean UCR 19.0 mg/dl, mean SPGR 1.0033, and mean UOSM

The better to comprehend isobaric spinal anaesthesia, we constructed a thermoregulated model of the subarachnoid space. With it we investigated the six not exactly isobaric local anaesthetics bupivacaine, carticaine, lidocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine and tetracaine, in order to determine the effect of the following factors on their spread: injected volume, position, density, temperature of the injected solution, rate of injection, barbotage, direction of the spinal needle and its opening. The injected volume was most important. The small differences in density were of consequence in the verti

In hypochromic anaemias (heterozygous beta-thalassaemia and iron deficiency anaemia) ligher red cells lose more K+ than heavier ones, following incubation at 37 degrees C for 24 h. Both in the light and heavy fractions two subpopulations of cells with different permeability to K+ can be separated by a new centrifugation after incubation. On the basis of the results, a relationship between K+ permeability and probability of survival in hypochromic cells is suggested.

Ikeda, M., and Ohtsuji, H. (1969).Brit. J. industr. Med.,26, 162-164. Hippuric acid, phenol, and trichloroacetic acid levels in the urine of Japanese subjects with no known exposure to organic solvents. Urine samples from 36 male and 30 female university students and 31 male factory workers with no known exposure to industrial organic solvents were analysed for hippuric acid, phenol, and trichloroacetic acid, which are the major metabolites of toluene, benzene, and trichloroethylene respectively. The normal levels were less than 1·4 g./l. for hippuric acid, less than 80 mg./l. for phenol, and

An eccentric muscle activation is the controlled lengthening of the muscle under tension. Functionally, most leg muscles work eccentrically for some part of a normal gait cycle, to support the weight of the body against gravity and to absorb shock. During downhill running the role of eccentric work of the 'anti-gravity' muscles--knee extensors, muscles of the anterior and posterior tibial compartments and hip extensors--is accentuated. The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship between eccentric muscle activation and muscle damage, particularly as it relates to running, and specif

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the phylogenetic as well as the individual development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On the one side, gravity represents a factor of physical restriction, which compelled the ancestors of all extant living beings to develop basic achievements to counter the gravitational force (e.g., elements of statics like any kind of skeleton--from actin to bone--to overcome gravity enforced size limits or to keep form). On the other side, alrea

BACKGROUND: Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is characterized by impaired renal responsiveness to arginine vasopressin, causing defective urinary concentration and large volumes of dilute urine. Long-term lithium exposure is an important acquired cause. Perioperative fasting, restricted free-water intake, and ongoing fluid losses may unmask compensated lithium-associated urinary concentrating dysfunction and precipitate severe hypernatremia.

Parameters of water metabolism were measured serially in nine patients with the syndrome of self-induced water intoxication and psychosis (SIWIP). Clinical and laboratory findings indicated that SIWIP patients are type A of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis. Estimated 24-hour urinary excretion of creatinine and early morning urinary creatinine concentration measurements were used to calculate 24-hour urine volumes. Polyuria was considered present for male patients when excretion was estimated to be greater than 2,600 ml of urine/24 hours or early morning urinary specific gravity was l

Patients of different age, among them 103 with viral hepatitis B and 120 with viral hepatitis A, were examined for immunoregulatory subpopulations of T lymphocytes and for the effects of HBsAg preparations and human liver-specific lipoprotein (LSL) on the blood E-RFC content. The patients of both mature and elderly age with viral hepatis A demonstrated insignificant, readily reversible alterations in cellular immunity. The patients with viral hepatitis B, particularly elderly ones, showed an evident tendency toward the predominance of the suppressor effects, which correlated with the disease g
