This paper reviews the literature pertaining to Parkinson's disease (PD) and the speech dysfunction typically associated with PD, including the effects on respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance, and prosody. The effect of treatment with the drug L-Dopa is also examined, along with the effect of L-Dopa treatment on Parkinsonian speech. This paper is the first of a two-part series. Part two examines the literature pertaining to the fluctuations that can occur during treatment with L-Dopa, the speech changes associated with these fluctuations, and methodological issues affecting the exam

A novel phenomenon of fluency enhancement via visual gestures of speech in the absence of traditional auditory feedback is reported herein. The effect on visual choral speech on stuttering frequency was investigated. Ten participants who stuttered recited memorized text aloud under two conditions. In a visual choral speech (VCS) condition participants were instructed to focus their gaze on the face, lips and jaw of a research assistant who 'silently mouthed' the text in unison. In a control condition, participants recited memorized text to the research assistant who sat motionless. A statistic

BACKGROUND: Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a core feature of nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia (naPPA), but its precise characteristics and the prevalence of AOS features in spontaneous speech are debated.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of features of AOS in the spontaneous, connected speech of individuals with naPPA and to evaluate whether these features are associated with an underlying motor disorder such as corticobasal syndrome or progressive supranuclear palsy.
METHODS: We examined features of AOS in 30 patients with naPPA using a picture description task. We compared th

Objective:To analysis speech pathology based on dysphonia in speech and voice(ADSV). Methods:The acoustic signals of continuous vowels and continuous speech of one-hundred and thirteen individuals were collected, including 93 vocal cord polyps cases, 20 glottis laryngeal carcinoma cases and 47 volunteers without speech sound disorders. Cepstral peak prominence(CPP), CPP standard deviation(CPP SD), L/H spectral ratio(L/H ratio), L/H ratio standard deviation(L/H ratio SD) and cepstral/spectral index of dysphonia(CSID) were analyzed by ADSV to explore the role of these parameters in the recogniti

The goal of this research was to obtain initial estimates of the prevalence of each of four types of motor speech disorders in children with idiopathic Speech Delay (SD) and to use findings to estimate the population-based prevalence of each disorder. Analyses were completed on audio-recorded conversational speech samples from 415 children recruited for research in idiopathic SD in six USA cities during the past three decades. The speech and motor speech status of each participant was cross-classified using standardized measures in the finalized version of the Speech Disorders Classification S

Although there is substantial rationale for a motor component in the speech of persons with Down syndrome (DS), there presently are no published estimates of the prevalence of subtypes of motor speech disorders in DS. The goal of this research is to provide initial estimates of the prevalence of types of speech disorders and motor speech disorders in adolescents with DS. Conversational speech samples from a convenience sample of 45 adolescents with DS, ages 10 to 20 years old, were analysed using perceptual and acoustic methods and measures in the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS).

Purpose This study sought to determine if (a) children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech sound disorders (SSDs), and typical development (TD) would perform differently on a standardized motor assessment and (b) whether comorbid language impairment would impact group differences. Method Speech, language, and motor abilities were assessed in children with CAS (n = 10), SSD (n = 16), and TD (n = 14) between the ages of 43 and 105 months. Motor skills were evaluated using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition (Henderson, Sugden, & Barnett, 2007), a behavior

The aim of the study was to present the first clinical experience of clinical trials of new methodology of the CI speech processor fitting with the new software Nucleus Fitting Software - NFS. At all 4 fittings sessions there were 15 children. During the fitting sessions 2 techniques were used - with the new NFS software and classical technique were used. The efficiency and need of collaboration of the speech therapist and the audiologist in the CI fitting sessions is proved. Results of inspection have shown that in 76.6% parents have established emotional cooperation with the children. Most o

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this report is to describe an initial version of the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS), a scale designed to quantify the presence or absence, relative frequency, and severity of characteristics frequently associated with apraxia of speech (AOS). In this paper we report intra-judge and inter-judge reliability, as well as indices of validity, for the ASRS which was completed for 133 adult participants with a neurodegenerative speech or language disorder, 56 of whom had AOS. The overall inter-judge ICC among three clinicians was 0.94 for the total ASRS score and 0.9

Surveillance registers monitor the prevalence of cerebral palsy and the severity of resulting impairments across time and place. The motor disorders of cerebral palsy can affect children's speech production and limit their intelligibility. We describe the development of a scale to classify children's speech performance for use in cerebral palsy surveillance registers, and its reliability across raters and across time. Speech and language therapists, other healthcare professionals and parents classified the speech of 139 children with cerebral palsy (85 boys, 54 girls; mean age 6.03 years, SD 1

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease commonly suffer from speech and voice difficulties such as impaired articulation and reduced loudness. Speech and language therapy (SLT) aims to improve the intelligibility of speech with behavioural treatment techniques or instrumental aids.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and effectiveness of novel SLT techniques versus a standard SLT approach to treat Parkinsonian speech problems.
SEARCH METHODS: We identified relevant, published prior to 11(th) April 2011, by electronic searches of numerous literature databases including CENTRAL, MEDLINE

The purpose of this experiment was to test the effectiveness of including speech production into naturalistic conversation training for 2 children with speech production disabilities. A multiple baseline design across behaviors (target phonemes) and across subjects (for the same phoneme) indicated that naturalistic conversation training resulted in improved spontaneous speech production. The implications of these findings are discussed relative to existing models of speech production training and other aspects of communication disorders.

The rhythm of Japanese has often been described as mora-timed, a characterisation that overlooks the richer prosodic hierarchy extending from the mora to the syllable, metrical foot and prosodic word. The present study examines rhythm perception in Japanese using a recently developed sensorimotor synchronisation technique. Forty native speakers of Tokyo Japanese participated in the experiment, synchronising in time with the beat of looped sentences spoken in their native variety. Analysing frequency, accuracy and stability of synchronisation, the study showed that the mora affected the percept

This real-life study aims to describe and compare the characteristics of patients who do or do not receive speech therapy after a memory consultation. Socio-demographic and medical data from the MEMORA cohort were matched with speech therapy reimbursement data from the French caisse primaire d'assurance maladie. Univariate analyses showed that speech therapy was more frequent in men, in patients with higher or secondary education, in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and having a higher MMSE. The multivariate model showed that only the diagnosis of AD remained strongly associate

In childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), children exhibit varying levels of speech intelligibility depending on the nature of errors in articulation and prosody. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies are beneficial, and commonly adopted with children with CAS. This study focused on the decision-making process and strategies adopted by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) when simultaneously implementing interventions that focused on natural speech and AAC. Eight SLPs, with significant clinical experience in CAS and AAC interventions, participated in an online focus group. The

This study evaluated unmasking functions of perceptual integration of target speech and simulated target-speech reflection, which were presented by two spatially separated loudspeakers. In both younger-adult listeners with normal hearing and older-adult listeners in the early stages of presbycusis, reducing the time interval between target speech and target-reflection simulation (inter-target interval, ITI) from 64 to 0ms not only progressively enhanced perceptual integration of target-speech signals, but also progressively released target speech from either speech masking or noise masking. Activation of fibroblasts is a key event during normal tissue repair after injury and the dysregulated repair processes that result in organ fibrosis. To most researchers, fibroblasts are rather unremarkable spindle-shaped cells embedded in the fibrous collagen matrix of connective tissues and/or deemed useful to perform mechanistic studies with adherent cells in culture. For more than a century, fibroblasts escaped thorough classification due to the lack of specific markers and were treated as the leftovers after all other cells have been identified from a tissue sample. With novel cell linea

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a heterogeneous group of autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias clinically characterized by progressive ataxia, dysarthria and a range of other concomitant neurological symptoms. Only a few studies include detailed characterization of speech symptoms in SCA. Speech symptoms in SCA resemble ataxic dysarthria but symptoms related to phonation may be more prominent. One study to date has shown an association between differences in speech and voice symptoms related to genotype. More studies of speech and voice phenotypes are motivated, to possibly aid in clinical

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to examine the nature and frequency of occurrence of disfluencies, as they occur in singletons and in clusters, in the conversational speech of individuals who clutter compared to typical speakers. Except for two disfluency types (revisions in clusters, and word repetitions in clusters) nearly all disfluency types were virtually indistinguishable in frequency of occurrence between the two groups. These findings shed light on cluttering in several respects, foremost of which is that it provides documentation on the nature of disfluencies in cluttering.
