Intelligibility of Emotional Speech in Chinese Older Adults: Effects of Age-Related Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The intelligibility of speech with emotional prosody may decline with aging and hearing loss. In Mandarin Chinese, both lexical tone and emotional prosody rely on pitch variations, raising the possibility that emotional prosody modulates speech intelligibility. This study examined the effects of aging and age-related hearing loss on word recognition for Mandarin words spoken with different emotional prosodies. METHOD: Four groups participated: older adults with normal hearing (ONH; n = 35, 60-86 years of age), older adults with mild-moderate hearing loss (OHL; n = 22, 61-83 years of

Mirrors and toothaches: commonplace manipulations of non-auditory feedback availability change perceived speech intelligibility.

This paper investigates the impact of two non-technical speech feedback perturbations outside the auditory modality: topical application of commercially-available benzocaine to reduce somatosensory feedback from speakers' lips and tongue tip, and the presence of a mirror to provide fully-detailed visual self-feedback. In experiment 1, speakers were recorded under normal quiet conditions (i.e., baseline), then again with benzocaine application plus auditory degradation, and finally with the addition of mirror feedback. Speech produced under normal and both feedback-altered conditions was assess

The Effects of Deep Brain Stimulation on Speech Intelligibility in Persons With Essential Tremor.

Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate how deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the caudal zona incerta (cZi) affects speech intelligibility in persons with essential tremor. Method Thirty-five participants were evaluated: off stimulation, on chronic stimulation optimized to alleviate tremor, and during unilateral stimulation at increasing amplitude levels. At each stimulation condition, the participants read 10 unique nonsense sentences from the Swedish Test of Intelligibility. Two listeners, blinded to stimulation condition, transcribed all recorded sentences orthographically in a rando

Effect of the Visual Presentation of a Craniofacial Syndrome on Speech Intelligibility in Noise.

OBJECTIVE: Research has argued that a speaker's facial appearance can result in an "intelligibility cost" for the listener. The study investigated whether such an intelligibility cost exists for a visible repaired cleft lip and nasal asymmetry. SETTING: University department. PARTICIPANTS: Eight typical speakers provided speech samples. Twenty-eight naive listeners participated in a speech in noise experiment. INTERVENTIONS: Listeners transcribed sentences in noise that were paired with faces of individuals with repaired cleft lip and nasal asymmetry or typical faces. They also rated speake

Importance of glottis landmarks for the assessment of cleft lip and palate speech intelligibility.

The present work explores the acoustic characteristics of articulatory deviations near g(lottis) landmarks to derive the correlates of cleft lip and palate speech intelligibility. The speech region around the g landmark is used to compute two different acoustic features, namely, two-dimensional discrete cosine transform based joint spectro-temporal features, and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. Sentence-specific acoustic models are built using these features extracted from the normal speakers' group. The mean log-likelihood score for each test utterance is computed and tested as the acoust

The effect of intensive speech rate and intonation therapy on intelligibility in Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Most studies on treatment of prosody in individuals with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease are based on intensive treatment of loudness. The present study investigates the effect of intensive treatment of speech rate and intonation on the intelligibility of individuals with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A one group pretest-posttest design was used to compare intelligibility, speech rate, and intonation before and after treatment. Participants included eleven Dutch-speaking individuals with predominantly moderate dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease, who receive

Effect of nasal speaking valve on speech intelligibility under velopharyngeal incompetence: a questionnaire survey.

Velopharyngeal incompetence is known as a contributing factor to speech disorders. Suwaki et al. reported that nasal speaking valve (NSV) could improve dysarthria by regulating nasal emission utilising one-way valve. However, disease or condition which would be susceptible to treatment by NSV has not been clarified yet. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of NSV by questionnaire survey using ready-made NSV. Subjects were recruited through the internet bulletin, and NSV survey set was sent to the applicant. Sixty-six participants, who agreed to participate in this study, used NSV and mailed

Cross-accent intelligibility of speech in noise: long-term familiarity and short-term familiarization.

Listeners must cope with a great deal of variability in the speech signal, and thus theories of speech perception must also account for variability, which comes from a number of sources, including variation between accents. It is well known that there is a processing cost when listening to speech in an accent other than one's own, but recent work has suggested that this cost is reduced when listening to a familiar accent widely represented in the media, and/or when short amounts of exposure to an accent are provided. Little is known, however, about how these factors (long-term familiarity and

Modeling speech intelligibility in quiet and noise in listeners with normal and impaired hearing.

The speech intelligibility index (SII) is an often used calculation method for estimating the proportion of audible speech in noise. For speech reception thresholds (SRTs), measured in normally hearing listeners using various types of stationary noise, this model predicts a fairly constant speech proportion of about 0.33, necessary for Dutch sentence intelligibility. However, when the SII model is applied for SRTs in quiet, the estimated speech proportions are often higher, and show a larger inter-subject variability, than found for speech in noise near normal speech levels [65 dB sound pressu

Speech intelligibility following maxillectomy with and without a prosthesis: an analysis of 54 cases.

To statistically evaluate the factors that influenced speech following maxillectomy, the speech intelligibility (SI) in 54 patients was measured with and without a prosthesis. The mean SI score without a prosthesis in all patients was 35.7 +/- 22.7% and that with a prosthesis was 84.9 +/- 12.7%. The results of the postmaxillectomy SI statistical analysis revealed that an oro-nasal communication was one of the factors that influenced SI without a prosthesis. The resection of the anterior portion of the soft palate was one of the factors that influenced SI with a prosthesis, which suggested that

The use of strategies to increase speech intelligibility in cerebral palsy: an experimental evaluation.

The effects of strategies on the intelligibility of cerebral-palsied speech were experimentally evaluated. Listeners were asked to identify words in sentences spoken by subjects whose dysarthria was rated to be either moderate or severe. Results indicated that strategies increased intelligibility and that different strategies were appropriate at different levels of severity. Use of initial letter cueing achieved the greatest gains for the more severely impaired speakers but, for the less severely impaired, the gains achieved by providing visual cues were the same as those achieved by letter cu

Dissociable Effects of Dysarthria Etiology and Severity on the Minimally Detectable Change of Speech Intelligibility.

PURPOSE: The minimally detectable change (MDC) provides a threshold for interpreting changes in outcome measures that are outside of measurement error. There is emerging evidence that dysarthria etiology and speech severity impact the MDC of speech intelligibility; however, an investigation of these factors is needed to determine the unique effects of dysarthria etiology and speech severity. The purpose of the current study was to calculate and compare MDCs of speech intelligibility across five dysarthria etiology groups and four severity levels. METHOD: Speech Intelligibility Test recordings

Perceptual and acoustic predictors of speech intelligibility among Hebrew-speaking young adults with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is a common chromosomal disorder associated with various speech impairments, including reduced intelligibility. While speech subsystem deficits in DS have been documented, their relative influence on intelligibility remains understudied, particularly in non-English speaking populations. This study investigated speech intelligibility and select subsystem functioning in Hebrew-speaking young adults with DS, aiming to describe the speech production disorder and identify predictors of single-word intelligibility in this population. METHODS: Twenty-four adults with D

A pilot study on the impact of wearing powered air-purifying respirators on speech intelligibility.

Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) have become an increasingly utilized form of respiratory protection against highly infectious aerosols. In the United States, PAPRs have been used in high-level clinical isolation settings to care for patients infected with viral hemorrhagic fevers and, more recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic. PAPRs have long been used for biocontainment care and experienced increased use during the pandemic because they provide full-face visibility and eye and respiratory protection. Despite their extended use, limited studies have explored the operational usabilit

rTMS of the auditory association cortex improves speech intelligibility in patients with sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Sensorineural hearing-loss (SHL) is accompanied by changes in the entire ear-brain pathway and its connected regions. While hearing-aid (HA) partially compensates for SHL, speech perception abilities often continue to remain poor, resulting in consequences in everyday activities. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) promotes cortical network plasticity and may enhance language comprehension in SHL patients. METHODS: 27 patients using HA and with SHL were randomly assigned to a treatment protocol consisting of five consecutive days of either real (Active group: 13 pat

Neural envelope tracking predicts speech intelligibility and hearing aid benefit in children with hearing loss.

Early assessment of hearing aid benefit is crucial, as the extent to which hearing aids provide audible speech information predicts speech and language outcomes. A growing body of research has proposed neural envelope tracking as an objective measure of speech intelligibility, particularly for individuals unable to provide reliable behavioral feedback. However, its potential for evaluating speech intelligibility and hearing aid benefit in children with hearing loss remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated neural envelope tracking in children with permanent hearing loss through two se

Agreement between Transcription- and Rating-Based Intelligibility Measurements for Evaluation of Dysphonic Speech in Noise.

Dysphonia negatively affects a speaker's intelligibility, especially in noisy environments. Previously, our study showed this effect of dysphonia with the transcription-based intelligibility measurement. While this finding indicates the importance of intelligibility assessment for this population, implementing the transcription-based measurement may be difficult in clinical settings due to its resource-demanding nature. Using the same speakers, this study examined the agreement between transcription- and rating-based intelligibility measurements. Six sentences from the Consensus of Auditory-Pe

Evidence for age-related cochlear synaptopathy in humans unconnected to speech-in-noise intelligibility deficits.

Cochlear synaptopathy (or the loss of primary auditory synapses) remains a subclinical condition of uncertain prevalence. Here, we investigate whether it affects humans and whether it contributes to suprathreshold speech-in-noise intelligibility deficits. For 94 human listeners with normal audiometry (aged 12-68 years; 64 women), we measured click-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), self-reported lifetime noise exposure, and speech reception thresholds for sentences (at 65 dB SPL) and words (at 50, 65 and 80 dB SPL) in steady-state and fluctuating maskers. Based on animal research, we
