The Development of Frontal and Sphenoid Sinuses After Full-House Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in a Child.

Although endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a standard procedure for adults and is considered a safe and effective procedure in children as well, some uncertainty remains when it comes to children, especially with regard to the future facial and sinus development. Overall, limited ESS does not affect sinus development, and extended ESS does not affect facial features. However, whether or not full-house ESS affects the sinus development, especially the frontal and sphenoid sinuses, remains unclear. The authors herein report a 15-year-old child who received full-house ESS and later re-examined th

Paranasal sinuses in children: size evaluation of maxillary, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses by magnetic resonance imaging and proposal of volume index percentile curves.

Our objective was to establish the age-related 3D size of maxillary, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses. A total of 179 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of children under 17 years (76 females, 103 males) were included and sinuses were measured in the three axes. Maxillary sinuses measured at birth (mean+/-standard deviation) 7.3+/-2.7 mm length (or antero-posterior)/4.0+/-0.9 mm height (or cranio-caudal)/2.7+/-0.8 mm width (or transverse). At 16 years old, maxillary sinus measured 38.8+/-3.5 mm/36.3+/-6.2 mm/27.5+/-4.2 mm. Sphenoid sinus pneumatization starts in the third year of life after convers

Relation between volume of sphenoid sinuses and protrusion of Vidian nerve: possible applications to Vidian neurectomy.

PURPOSE: Vidian neurectomy is a surgical procedure applied to different pathological conditions, including chronic rhinitis and sphenopalatine neuralgia. The choice of the correct surgical approach depends upon the possible protrusion of Vidian nerve into the sphenoid sinuses. The present study analyzes the possible relationship between protrusion of Vidian nerve and volume of sphenoid sinuses. METHODS: In total, 320 maxillofacial CT-scans were retrospectively assessed. Subjects equally divided among males and females (age range 18-94 years) were divided into three groups according to the pro

A comparative analysis of sphenoid and frontal sinuses using cone beam computed tomography for sex determination.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate linear measurements of the frontal sinus (FS) and sphenoid sinus (SS) for sex identification on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS: A comparative CBCT analysis was conducted on 200 full field of view (FOV) scans taken as part of routine dental investigations. Dimensions of the bilateral frontal and sphenoid sinuses were measured. Intra- and interobserver reliability were calculated. Independent t tests were used to compare the various parameters between sexes. Stepwise discriminant function analysis was used to determine sex. Addition

Clival Osteomyelitis Secondary to Isolated Sphenoid Sinusitis Caused by Nocardia veterana in an Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report.

Nocardiosis is an infectious disease caused by filamentous, saprophytic bacteria that classically affects the lungs, central nervous system, and skin as an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients. Although it can affect any organ system in general, osteomyelitis is not commonly seen and even more rarely involves the skull. We report the uncommon case of a clival osteomyelitis secondary to isolated sphenoid sinusitis caused by Nocardia veterana in an 85-year-old immunocompetent female who presented with right-sided facial pain, abducens nerve palsy, and eventually loss of vision.

Combined endoscopic transnasal and intrasphenoidal septal approach for the drainage of sphenoid sinusitis with cleft lip: technical note.

Isolated sphenoiditis is an uncommon disease, particularly in children. Immediate antibiotic therapy and/or endoscopic transnasal sphenoidotomy should be performed to avoid fatal complications. However, the commonly used transnasal route is not always available in children with a cleft lip and deviated nasal septum. We report a case of acute isolated sphenoid sinusitis in a 12-year-old boy with a cleft lip and deviated nasal septum. This patient underwent combined endoscopic transnasal and intrasphenoidal septal surgery and improved without septoplasty, which may affect the later growth of the

Contralateral Precaruncular Approach to the Lateral Sphenoid Sinus-A Case Report Detailing a New, Multiportal Approach to Lesions, and Defects in the Lateral Aspect of Well-Pneumatized Sphenoid Sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional surgical approaches to the lateral aspect of a well-pneumatized sphenoid sinus are associated with significant surgical morbidity. Transorbital endoscopic approaches have recently gained favor as an alternative approach to the skull base. We describe the use of a contralateral precaruncular endoscopic approach to provide a surgical pathway to the lateral aspect of the sphenoid sinus, allowing for improved and direct visualization of the surgical field, with limited morbidity. CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old female patient, with a spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak from

The Sinus Snare: A Case Series of Isolated Sphenoid Sinusitis Presenting as Orbital Apex Syndrome in Poorly Controlled Diabetes.

Isolated sphenoid sinusitis is an uncommon entity, accounting for a small proportion of paranasal sinus disease. Its deep anatomical location and proximity to the optic nerve, cavernous sinus, and orbital apex often result in delayed diagnosis, particularly when typical nasal symptoms are absent. In poorly controlled diabetics, fungal infection of the sphenoid sinus can progress rapidly, presenting initially with ophthalmic deficits rather than sinonasal complaints. This series describes three female patients between 50 and 53 years of age, all with long-standing type 2 diabetes mellitus with

Molecular defects in primary ciliary dyskinesia are associated with agenesis of the frontal and sphenoid paranasal sinuses and chronic rhinosinusitis.

Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD; MIM 242650) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by malfunction of the motile cilia resulting in reduced mucociliary clearance of the airways. Together with recurring infections of the lower respiratory tract, chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a hallmark symptom of PCD. Data on genotype-phenotype correlations in the upper airways are scarce. Materials and methods: We investigated the prevalence, radiologic severity, and impact on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) of CRS in 58 individuals with genetically confirmed PCD. Subgroup analysis was p

[Peculiarities of the application of a multi-angle endoscopy during surgical interventions on the ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses: the anatomical study].

This work was designed to carry out the postmortem evaluation of the potential of using a multi-angle endoscope for endonasal surgical interventions on the ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses. The study was performed on 5 fresh cadavers (10 sides). It was shown that the range of the angles and directions of view during dissection of ethmoidal sinuses is 10-50 degrees and 360 degrees respectively. The use of an Acclarent Cyclops endoscope made it possible to visualize all walls of the sphenoidal sinus through the enlarged aperture which confirms the higher effectiveness of this instrument compared
