Assessment of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in spices from Abadan, Iran: a health risk evaluation study.

This study examines the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in frequently consumed spices using inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The risk assessment of exposure to these metals was also investigated through probabilistic Monte Carlo simulation to estimate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. The findings indicated that the highest PTEs concentrations were found in curry (189.27 mg/kg), while turmeric had the lowest levels (111.87 mg/kg). Mn had the highest concentration among all the spices, followed by Fe (with the exception of black pe

Effect of Allium spices (garlic and onion) on the bioaccessibility of iron from Moringa oleifera leaves.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of garlic and onion, two Allium spices rich in sulfur compounds, on the bioaccessibility of iron from Moringa oleifera leaves. We first quantified anti-nutritional factors in various cooked mixtures of Moringa oleifera leaves and spices, with increasing level of incorporation of garlic or onion. We then assessed the iron bioaccessibility of the various mixtures using a simulated in vitro digestion method. Finally, we studied the speciation of bioaccessible iron. Total phenols contents ranging from 801.44 to 903.07 and from 869.78 to 990.72 mg

Plant Spices as a Source of Antimicrobial Synergic Molecules to Treat Bacterial and Viral Co-Infections.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the lack of antiviral agents available for human use, while the complexity of the physiological changes caused by coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) imposed the prescription of multidrug pharmacotherapy to treat infected patients. In a significant number of cases, it was necessary to add antibiotics to the prescription to decrease the risk of co-infections, preventing the worsening of the patient's condition. However, the precautionary use of antibiotics corroborated to increase bacterial resistance. Since the development of vaccines for COVID-19, the pandemic scenario has

Spicing up continuum solvation models with SaLSA: the spherically averaged liquid susceptibility ansatz.

Continuum solvation models enable electronic structure calculations of systems in liquid environments, but because of the large number of empirical parameters, they are limited to the class of systems in their fit set (typically organic molecules). Here, we derive a solvation model with no empirical parameters for the dielectric response by taking the linear response limit of a classical density functional for molecular liquids. This model directly incorporates the nonlocal dielectric response of the liquid using an angular momentum expansion, and with a single fit parameter for dispersion con

Spice: a new "legal" herbal mixture abused by young active duty military personnel.

Spice is an herbal mixture smoked for euphoria and mixed with synthetic cannabinoids that are undetected on urine drug screens. Spice use has increased in the military because it is considered legal and is not detected on urine drug screen. The authors describe 3 cases of Spice use in military members. Case 1: 19-year-old male presented with paranoia, agitation, and visual hallucinations after smoking the "Space" brand of Spice. Urine thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were negative. Case 2: 19-year-old female presented with sedation, amnesia, and

Simultaneous analysis of 40 pyrrolizidine alkaloids in herbs and spices by supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, including their free bases (PAs) and their N-oxides (PANOs), are plant-derived natural toxins, which often pose analytical challenges because they have many structurally similar isomers that are difficult to separate by conventional chromatography. To address this issue, we employed supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. A 3-hydroxyphenyl column with an ammonium formate-containing methanolic modifier gradient enabled simultaneous determination of the 40 PAs/PANOs, although some isomeric pairs were only partially resolved. We validated the develope
