Black and brown widow spider bites in South Africa. A series of 45 cases.

Cases of black widow (Latrodectus indistinctus) and brown widow (L. geometricus) spider bites referred to the Tygerberg Pharmacology and Toxicology Consultation Centre from the summer of 1987/88 to the summer of 1991/92 were entered into this series. Of a total of 45 patients, 30 had been bitten by black and 15 by brown widow spiders. It was evident that black widow spider bites caused a more severe form of envenomation than brown widow bites, characterised by generalised muscle pain and cramps, abdominal muscle rigidity, profuse sweating, raised blood pressure and tachycardia. The symptoms an

Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia secondary to a brown recluse spider bite.

A female in her 30s from Missouri with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department with worsening fatigue, haematuria and back pain following a brown recluse spider bite. On admission, laboratory findings were significant for anaemia, leukocytosis, hyperbilirubinaemia, elevated lactate dehydrogenase, low haptoglobin and a positive direct antiglobulin test. The working diagnosis was autoimmune haemolytic anaemia secondary to a brown recluse spider bite; a rare but serious haematologic complication associated with brown recluse spider bites. The patient required mul

Cutaneous Mucormycosis following a Spider Bite: A Rare and Challenging Case.

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is a rare and life-threatening fungal infection caused by Mucorales, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals such as those with diabetes or organ transplants. While it typically involves the sinuses, lungs, or central nervous system, cutaneous mucormycosis following minor trauma, including spider bites, is extremely uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 44-year-old Palestinian man with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and a history of renal transplant on immunosuppressive therapy who developed progressive pain, swelling, and erythema of the ri

Immune-mediated mechanism for thrombocytopenia after Loxosceles spider bite.

Loxoscelism, characterized by high fever, vomiting, malaise, a dermonecrotic lesion, and thrombocytopenia, was diagnosed in a 3-year-old female. Clinical laboratory and dermatological signs are described. Blood test showed a transient hypercoagulable state and the presence of IgG antibodies against platelets, suggesting an immune-mediated mechanism for platelet destruction, in addition to the direct toxic effect of the spider venom. The finding of platelet antibodies after a Loxosceles spider bite has not been previously reported.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) triggered by a spider bite.

BACKGROUND: Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare and severe cutaneous reaction usually triggered by drugs. Other causative factors such as viral infections are rarely involved. In this study, we report a case of AGEP caused by a spider bite. CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old woman was referred to the allergy unit after a spider bite at the left popliteal fossa, while gardening, 5 days earlier. The offending spider was captured and identified by an entomologist as belonging to the Loxosceles rufescens species. No acute reaction was observed; however, after 24 hours, due to the

[Toxic pictures produced spiders bites in Chile: latrodectism and loxoscelism].

Latrodectism, produced by the bite of Latrodectus spiders, is worldwide distributed, occurs in hot seasons, and affects mostly men when carrying out agricultural activities. The main symptoms are muscular pain and tremors, profuse perspiration, increased lacrimal, nasal and salival secretions, and hypertension. Symptoms last one week. Neostigmine is a very efficient drug in the treatment of this condition. Loxoscelism, caused by the bite of Loxosceles spiders, is worldwide distributed, affects individuals of all ages. It may present two clinical forms: cutaneous loxoscelism (CL) and viscerocut

Incompatibility associated with the bite of a brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa).

Red cell samples from a patient who was suffering from massive hemolysis due to a brown recluse spider (Loxosceles reclusa) bite were found to be reactive by indirect antiglobulin test with most ABO-compatible serum samples. Spider venom, enzymes related to those in spider venom, and antisera to plasma proteins and Rh antigens were used to investigate the unusual reactivity of the patient's cells. IgG was detected on the patient's cells by indirect antiglobulin tests. Cells treated with brown recluse spider venom or phosphatidylcholine phosphatidohydrolase reacted similarly. These findings sug

Spider bites in France: Epidaemiology of cases occurring in 10 years in metropolitan France.

Spiders are often wrongly designated as responsible for cutaneous eruptions. We aim to describe spider bites and the spider species implicated in metropolitan France. A retrospective observational study was conducted for all reported cases of spider bites from 2007 to 2018 extracted from the French Poison Control Centers (PCCs) information system, after exclusion of non-native spiders. We described identification of the spider, level of certainty of the bite, symptoms and severity of cases. 1194 cases of spider bites met the inclusion criteria. The average age of the patients was 36.9 ± 19.8 y

When to worry about spider bites. Inaccurate diagnosis can have serious, even fatal, consequences.

Almost all species of spiders are capable of biting people, but the bites of only a few are medically significant. Physicians need to be able to recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of common venomous spider bites and administer appropriate therapy. This may be difficult, since the offending spider is rarely seen or recovered for identification. Knowledge of life cycles, habits, and toxicity of venomous spiders enables physicians to provide more comprehensive medical care of bite victims. It is hoped that study of immunologic mechanisms and inflammation mediators will lead to the developm

Misdiagnosis of spider bites: bacterial associates, mechanical pathogen transfer, and hemolytic potential of venom from the hobo spider, Tegenaria agrestis (Araneae: Agelenidae).

The European spider Tegenaria agrestis (Walckenaer) (hobo spider) has been implicated as a spider of medical importance in the Pacific Northwest since its introduction in the late 1980s. Studies have indicated that the hobo spider causes necrotic tissue lesions through hemolytic venom or through the transfer of pathogenic bacteria introduced by its bite. Bacterial infections are often diagnosed as spider bites, in particular the pathogenic bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This study examines three aspects of the potential medical importance of hobo spiders in part o

Mygalomorph spider bites: a report on 91 cases in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

From 1966 to 1991 91 cases of bites due to mygalomorph spiders were recorded at the Hospital Vital Brazil, Instituto Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil, representing less than 1% of all spider bites. The diagnosis was confirmed by positive identification of the spider involved. Envenoming is generally mild, the main symptom is local pain, and there is minor oedema and erythema. The data confirm the assumption that these nonaggressive spiders pose no health problem.

Septic arthritis attributed to a spider bite - a case report and review of the literature.

Individuals who travel to tropical or subtropical areas are exposed to various infectious, environ-mental, and climatic risk factors, as well as traffic accidents, security problems, natural disasters, and direct contact with potentially dangerous plants or animals. Accidental bites by venomous spiders during long journeys are always dangerous to health and life, but it is not usually recognized that nonvenomous spiders also pose such a substantial threat to the lives of local inhabitants and travelers. Here, we present an unusual case of a 41-year-old male patient who was admitted to the Univ

Your friendly neighborhood spider bite - Or not: A fishy case of Mycobacterium marinum.

Mycobacterium marinum is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium, most commonly causing cutaneous infection after prolonged or repeated exposure to contaminated aquatic environments. Diagnosis is frequently delayed because of its indolent course, nonspecific clinical features, and frequent misattribution to more common dermatologic conditions. We report the case of a 51-year-old immunocompromised woman who developed a progressive ulcerative lesion on the right wrist after a presumed spider bite following a farm visit. Despite multiple emergency department encounters and empiric antibacteri

Brown spider (Loxosceles sp.) bite and COVID-19: A case report.

We present the case of a 32-year-old male patient hospitalized during the COVID-19 pandemic because of a Brown spider bite on his lower lip. The Brown spider accident occurred in southern Brazil; at hospital admission, the patient presented on his lip: edema, pustules, necrotic regions, and ulcerations. The patient complained of lower back pain, fever and dyspnea. Laboratory tests showed monocytosis, leukocytosis, neutrophilia, increased D-dimer levels, C-reactive protein, glutamate-pyruvate transaminase, delta bilirubin, creatine phosphokinase, procalcitonin, and fibrinogen. The patient was h

Coexistence of Rhabdomyolysis, Myocarditis and Arrhythmia after Spider Bite: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyolysis after spider bite has been reported in a small number of patients, and myocarditis in even fewer. However, arrhythmia associated with latrodectism in children has not been described in the literature to date. CASE SUMMARY: A girl presented approximately 4.5 h after being bitten on the left ankle by a black spider. Two unifocal premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) were observed on the electrocardiogram. In laboratory tests, creatine kinase was elevated. On day 2, levels of troponin, pro-brain and natriuretic peptide were elevated. Electrocardiogram revealed inve

[Spider bite or infection caused by Panton Valentine leucocidin-producing Staphylococcusaureus?].

INTRODUCTION: Spiders, especially those of the genus Loxoceles such as L. rufescens, endemic in Mediterranean regions, are frequently reported as causes of venom poisoning in humans in the south of France. The most common signs consist of cutaneous necrosis presenting initially as inflammatory cellulitis and progressing towards the emergence of a necrotic centre. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report 4 cases, initially considered as spider bites due to their sudden occurrence and pain. Rigorous clinical examination coupled with collection of samples for laboratory analysis ultimately enabled the di
