[Current status of spinal injuries in winter sports].

Parallel with a marked escalation in the number of injuries of the skull, shoulder girdle and upper extremities in recent years, the incidence of spinal injuries has also intensified. This is due to an increase in speed and deceleration traumas, such as are particular to collision accidents. Of all patients with winter sports injuries at the Department of Traumatology at Innsbruck University Hospital, 4.9% have a spinal trauma. A retrospective ten-year study was undertaken to analyze the surgically treated spinal injuries out of overall winter sports injuries. Between 1982 and 1992 862 spinal

[Ventral stabilization of thoracic and lumbar spinal injuries].

An isolated ventral approach to the thoracal or lumbar spine seems sufficient in special burst fractures (type A2/3) or older compression fractures. The most effective ventral decompression of the spinal cord is followed by the fusion of the ventral body. Ventral plate instrumentation avoid dislocations of the interposed bone transplants. Our own clinical results are demonstrated.

Sexual issues of women with spinal cord injuries.

The need for research addressing problems unique to women with spinal cord injuries is well documented. Consequently, 231 such women, ages 18 to 45, were surveyed. Demographic characteristics and data relating to physician usage, female hygiene, pregnancy, contraception and sexuality were collected. Analysis revealed that 60% of the respondents had post injury amenorrhea; the average time until menses resumption was 5 months. The group's post injury pregnancy rate was one-third its pre injury rate, but women with incomplete paraplegia had significantly more pregnancies than those with complete

[Prevention of spinal injuries at the work place].

Work-related back problems can be induced by a fixed and forced posture, heavy manual labour, climatic factors, and exposure to partial and whole-body vibration. In most cases, a combination of factors are involved. Fixed and forced postures can be avoided by a better arrangement of the workplace and by individual measures. Technical progress has diminished the number of workplaces requiring heavy manual labour. In the remaining jobs, however, appropriate techniques for lifting and back-relief must be taught. Today the prevention of sitting-induced back lesions is very important; the use of ad

Multilevel spinal injuries. Incidence, distribution and neurological patterns.

Spinal injury at more than one level is not uncommon. Awareness of multilevel injury of the spine and associated neurological patterns is important for the proper initial management of the patient. This study presents the incidence, pattern of signs and the neurological consequences of multilevel spinal injury. A review of 935 patients with spinal injuries revealed that lesions occurred in multiple levels in 9.7%; in over half of the cases, neurological lesions were incomplete. Multiple level non-contiguous lesions at more than two levels had the worst prognosis with 70% of patients suffering

Pathoanatomical and surgical findings in cervical spinal injuries.

The pathomorphology of normal and degenerated human cervical spines that had been subjected to trauma was studied in detail by surface-cryoplaning of frozen autopsy specimens. Four cervical spines that had been surgically fused were also sectioned after removal of the metal. In young individuals, disc ruptures occurred that resulted in compromise of the vertebral canal. In degenerated spines, vertebral endplate ridges were frequently fractured. These injuries resulted in encroachment on the spinal cord as well as on the nerve roots in the foramen. Osteophytes from the uncinate processes also c

Gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with acute spinal injuries.

439 acute, male, spinal injury patients were admitted over an 11-year period at the National Spinal Injuries Centre: 206 cervical, 182 dorsal, and 51 lumbar cord injuries. 27 patients had gastrointestinal bleeds; 20 bled on one occasion, 7 had more than one episode; 22 bled within 4 weeks of injury. The mean was 22.5 days. The presentation was mostly malaena. A diagnosis was made in 19 cases; 12 had duodenal ulcers, 4 gastric ulcers, 1 had gastritis, 1 had a gastric carcinoma, 1 had oesophagitis with a possible Mallory-Weiss tear; 4 died. The incidence was higher in cervical patients. Causatio

Spinal and Paraspinal Injuries from Weightlifting in Minors.

OBJECTIVE: Weightlifting is a common form of exercise, especially among adolescents. Many exercises can put the spine and paraspinal muscles under a great deal of stress, both directly with back exercises and indirectly through loading exercises like squats. The national incidence of weightlifting injuries to the spinal and paraspinal regions in minors has yet to be determined. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried between 2004 and 2023 for emergency department visits by minors for injuries sustained from weightlifting using the product code for weightlifting
