Spinal nerve root β-APP staining in infants is not a reliable indicator of trauma.

This preliminary communication describes seven babies with β-amyloid precursor protein (βAPP) positive axonal swellings in nerve roots at multiple levels of the spinal cord. All seven babies died of natural causes. Two died in utero providing evidence for nerve root injury in the absence of trauma, two died within one day of birth and the possibility of birth related injury has to be considered. Three babies were over one month of age and had no history or pathological evidence of trauma. These findings show that if axonal injury is carefully sought in every infant death, not just in babies wh

Multiple bilateral spinal nerve root calcifications in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

We present a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with multiple bilateral symmetrical cervical nerve root calcifications. To our knowledge, such a finding has not been described in the literature in association with this disease. We propose that multiple bilateral symmetrical spinal nerve root calcifications may be an additional imaging feature, possibly diagnostic, in this hereditary motor and spinal neuropathy.

Characteristics of nerve root compression caused by degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis with scoliosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: In degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis with scoliosis (DLS), many authors stated that nerve root compression is almost always seen on the concave side of the scoliosis, and L4 and L5 nerve roots are the most often involved. However, there are few reports on the relationship between nerve root compression and the pattern of scoliosis. PURPOSE: To investigate the factors that may contribute to radiculopathy in DLS and their association with the pattern of the scoliosis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis. METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients with DLS with radiculopat

Spinal cord and nerve root monitoring during surgical treatment of lumbar stenosis.

The author describes application of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring to surgical treatment of lumbar stenosis. Benefits of somatosensory and motor evoked potential studies during surgical correction of spinal deformity are well known and documented. Free-running and evoked electromyographic studies during pedicle screw implantation is an accepted practice at many institutions. However, the functional integrity of spinal cord, cauda equina, and nerve roots should be monitored throughout every stage of surgery including exposure and decompression. Somatosensory evoked potentials monito

Symptomatic intradural adrenal adenoma of the spinal nerve root: report of two cases.

The second and third cases of an adrenal adenoma involving the intraspinal space, a rare location for a lesion that occurs rather commonly at a variety of extraneural sites, are reported. The first patient, a 16-year-old girl with a 3-month history of radicular pain, was found to have an intradural, extramedullary mass arising on a spinal nerve root. Its resection resulted in cure. The second patient, a 63-year-old woman with a 10-month history of low back pain with radiation to both lower extremities, had a similar mass arising from one of the nerve roots of the cauda equina. In both cases, u

[Neurinoma of the L3 spinal nerve root as a cause of stress-induced lumbo-ischialgias].

Degenerative diseases of the lumbar vertebral discs or the vertebral joints are the main causes of low back pain and sciatica following overstraining during sports activities. However, they are rarely seen in sportsmen engaged in competitive sports because these persons are mostly young and well-trained. Other neurological diseases are even rarer as possible causes of sciatica. That is why we report on a young athletic who is a short-distance hurdler (110m hurdle race) and has been suffering from a neurinoma of the spinal nerve root L3 with sciatica and pain in the knee as initial symptoms. At

Redundant nerve roots of the cauda equina in lumbar spinal canal stenosis, an MR study on 500 cases.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate magnetic resonance (MR)-detected redundant nerve roots (RNRs) of the cauda equina in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis. METHODS: A total of 500 lumbar MR studies in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis were reviewed for the presence and characteristics of RNRs of the cauda equina. The length of the RNRs relative to the height of the upper vertebral body of the level of the stenosis was used as a prognostic indicator. RESULTS: RNRs were detected in 15% of the patients, the majority above the level of the stenosis (85%) and loop

Radiological significance of ligamentum flavum hypertrophy in the occurrence of redundant nerve roots of central lumbar spinal stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: There were previous reports of redundant nerve roots (RNRs) focused on their clinical significance and pathogenesis. In this study, we investigated the significant radiologic findings that correlate with RNRs occurrence. These relations would provide an advanced clue for clinical significance and pathogenesis of RNRs. METHODS: Retrospective research was performed with data from 126 patients who underwent surgery for central lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Finally, 106 patients with common denominators (inter-observer accuracy : 84%) were included on this study. We divided the patient

Morphometric characteristics and intradural connections of the spinal root of accessory nerve in human fetuses.

Intradural connections between the spinal root of accessory nerve (SRAN) and the posterior roots of spinal nerves in the cervical region are clinically significant for torticollis, occipital neuralgia and surgeries of the craniocervical region. However, information on these connections during the fetal period is limited. This study aimed to examine the morphology and morphometry of the SRAN in fetuses and its intradural connections with the posterior roots of spinal nerves in the cervical region. Twenty-nine fetuses (58 sides; 18 to 35 gestational weeks) fixed in 10% formalin, were bilaterally

[Lumbar nerve root pain with fever in tropical area: posterior spinal tuberculosis].

The purpose of this report is to describe the case of tuberculosis osteitis of the posterior vertebral arch in a 35-year-old man with recent history of pulmonary tuberculosis. Clinical findings were pain due to bilateral inflammation of the lumbar nerve roots, fistulised cold abcess and motor deficit in both lower extremities. The tomodensitometry demonstrated a lytic bone lesion involving the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra in association with spondylitis and a large paravertebral abscess with calcification typical of tuberculosis. Cure was achieved by a single 12-month course o

Early effects of nucleus pulposus application on spinal nerve root morphology and function.

It is known that 24 h or more after epidural application of autologous nucleus pulposus, functional and structural changes are established in adjacent nerve roots. It is, however, not known how soon after the application these changes appear. The aim of this study was to reduce the exposure duration to 3 h and to evaluate nerve function and histological changes in the nerve tissue during this time period. A total of 12 pigs was used. In ten pigs, autologous nucleus pulposus (NP) was applied epidurally on the cauda equina. Nerve function was then monitored for 3 h by measurements of muscle acti

Adrenergic innervation of the vasa nervorum in the cranial nerves and spinal roots in the subarachnoid space.

Fluorescence microscopy revealed that the innervation of the vasa nervorum of both cranial and spinal nerve roots in the subarachnoid space in the monkey is adrenergic in nature. The endoneurium of the cranial nerve roots contained free adrenergic nerve fibers which were not related to the vessel wall.

Scanning pattern of diffusion tensor tractography and an analysis of the morphology and function of spinal nerve roots.

Radiculopathy, commonly induced by intervertebral disk bulging or protrusion, is presently diagnosed in accordance with clinical symptoms because there is no objective quantitative diagnostic criterion. Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor tractography revealed the characterization of anisotropic diffusion and displayed the anatomic form of nerve root fibers. This study included 18 cases with intervertebral disc degeneration-induced unilateral radiculopathy. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging was creatively used to reveal the scanning pattern of fiber track
