Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) may experience neuropathic symptoms, such as back pain, radiating pain, and neurogenic claudication. Although the long-term outcomes of both nonsurgical and surgical treatments are similar, surgery may provide shortterm benefits, including improved symptoms and lower risk of falling. Decompression is mainly used for surgical treatment, and depending on the decompression degree and associated instability, combination therapy may be given. Minimally invasive surgery has been demonstrated to produce excellent results in the treatment of LSS. Thus, an app

OBJECTIVE: To investigate electrophysiological characteristics of patients with cervical spinal stenosis (CSS) due to cervical disc herniation.
METHODS: A total of 51 patients with CSS diagnosed in our hospital from January 2018 to March 2020 were selected. According to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the degree of spinal cord compression was divided into 1-3 grades, namely, group A (MRI grade 1), group B (MRI grade 2), and group C (MRI grade 3), with 17 cases in each group. Subsequently, we analyzed the correlation of the degree of spinal cord compression with the general information, clin

PURPOSE: To develop a self-administered diagnostic screening questionnaire for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) consisting of items with high content validity and to investigate the diagnostic value of the questionnaire and the items.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A self-reported diagnostic LSS screening questionnaire was developed based on items from the existing literature describing key symptoms of LSS. The screening questionnaire (index test) was to be tested in a cohort of patients with persistent lumbar and/or leg pain recruited from a Danish publicly funded outpatient secondary care spine clinic w

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a frequent cause of low back pain among adults, caused by a narrowing impinging on the spinal cord or nerve roots. Several conditions cause LSS, including disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, tumor, fractures, and other degenerative changes. Back pain is frequently experienced. MRI is the radiologic modality of choice. Radiographic evidence of LSS may not correlate well with symptoms. An increase in utilization of surgery has been noted. However, surgery has no significant benefit over more conservative options. An appropriate risk/benefit discussion between the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate value of X-ray, CT and MRI for the diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis.
METHODS: The data of 130 patients with clinical diagnosis and typical imaging signs of lumbar spinal stenosis were analyzed. The present study included 83 males and 47 females with an average age of 43.5 years (range from 27 to 75 years). CT examination was performed in all patients, routine X-ray examination in 23 patients and routine MRI in 57 patients.
RESULTS: The lumbar spinal stenosis showed at L(3,4) plane in 25 patients, L(4,5) in 48 patients and L5S1 in 57 patients. CT showed hyperostos

UNLABELLED: Lumbar spinal stenosis is being diagnosed increasingly in older people as advanced imaging studies become more widely available and clinicians become more familiar with the presentation of this common condition. For symptomatic patients, the goal of treatment is pain relief and improved function, but there is little empiric evidence to support many of the common interventions used. The relative risks and benefits of various surgical and nonsurgical treatments are poorly understood, and the result has been wide variations in the evaluation and treatment of spinal stenosis across geo

Metatropic dysplasia is a rare skeletal dysplasia characterized by rapid collapse of the thoracolumbar spine into kyphoscoliosis. Other spinal anomalies associated with metatropic dysplasia include odontoid hypoplasia and atlantoaxial instability leading to cervical myelopathy. Children with metatropic dysplasia evaluated at our institution for spinal deformity showed evidence of cervical stenosis with or without associated cord compression. Magnetic resonance imaging was found to demonstrate these changes. The association of cervical spinal stenosis and metatropic dysplasia has not been previ

Neurophysiologic function and ischemia causes neurogenic symptoms in lumbar spinal stenosis. Neurophysiologic function and potential therapeutic agents were investigated using a chronic cauda equina compression model that was developed according to a clinical pathogenesis. In the chronic cauda equina compression model, nerve conduction velocity and blood flow in spinal nerves decreased but mechanical allodynia was not induced. Prostaglandins and 5-HT receptor antagonist effected to improve blood flow in nerve roots after cauda equina compression;therefore, they might be potential agents for lu

Spinal stenosis mainly is a disease of the elderly. In most cases the lumbar spine is affected. The assessment is based on the typical constellation of symptoms (neurogenic claudication, subjective weakness) and physical findings (abnormal reflex status, loss of strength, sensory deficits, impairment in balance and coordination). The diagnosis is further supported by the radiologic proof of a stenosis of the spinal canal, the lateral recess, and the intervertebral foramina. The main targets of physical and rehabilitative medicine are the relief of pain and an improvement in the activities of d

OBJECTIVES: To describe the underlying causes, surgical results and prognostic factors in thoracic stenosis causing myelopathy.
METHODS: The underlying causes and surgical results were analyzed retrospectively in 28 cases of thoracic spinal stenosis which caused myelopathy. Degenerative spondylosis was the most common cause, and three cases were associated with systemic diseases. Decompressive laminectomy was performed in 24 cases, anterior decompression in five cases, and combined decompression in one case. Ossification of ligamentum flavum was found in 18 cases, facet hypertrophy in 13, oss

STUDY DESIGN: A description of the technique for lumbar microdecompression and a prospective study of the outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and analyze a technique that affords an excellent decompression while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Commonly used techniques of lumbar decompression that include bilateral takedown of paraspinal musculature and aggressive bony resection can result in significant iatrogenic sequelae. A less destructive alternative is needed.
METHODS: Unilateral limited takedown of multifidus was undertaken, and ipsilateral decompres

Lumbar stenosis includes various forms of constriction of the spinal canal or the intervertebral foramen. Stenosis may be present in isolation, with or without a disc bulge or herniation, or can be associated with degenerative spondylolisthesis or degenerative scoliosis. This article analyzes the indication for surgery and the methods and outcomes of operative treatment in central, lateral, and foraminal stenosis either isolated or associated with other conditions. The factors that most affect outcome are correct indications for surgery and adequate technique. At present, 70-80% of patients ha

The current report concerns the unusual symptom of intermittent priapism, or what may be termed 'involuntary penile erection', associated with proven degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. Seven patients who were treated for intermittent claudication and spontaneous priapism during walking were studied in terms of clinical presentation, imaging findings, and some electrophysiological testing. Varying degrees of walking and standing tolerance with these unusual symptoms appeared to be correlated with cauda equina constriction as was seen by radiological imaging. Although not statistically valid,

The mesenchymal repair process of the connective tissue in the surgical wound following lumbar laminectomy presents three aspects: postoperative epidural scar, heterotopic bone formation in the epidural scar and vertebral hyperostosis around laminectomy. Twelve cases of lumbar spine hyperostosis consecutive to laminectomy, confirmed by x-ray findings and surgery are presented. The main symptom at presentation was a recurrent sciatic neuritis. Lumbo-sacral spine films showed a "bright" focal condensation in the previous surgical. Lamina inferior and superior and the articular facets were hypert

Expansive laminoplasty, a procedure used for cervical myelopathy, was carried out in 4 patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. The method was used in relatively young patients with severe low back and sciatic pain who had intraspinal ossification at multiple segments, with or without developmental spinal stenosis. The advantages of osteoplastic enlargement of the lumbar spinal canal with reinforcement of spinal stability are confirmed by our follow up of 2 to 5 1/2 years. The results were very satisfactory in each case. The indications and operative technique are described.

A case of spontaneous intermittent priapism in a patient with spinal canal stenosis is presented. Erection, as well as intermittent neurogenic claudication and urinary incontinence were provoked by physical exertion, mainly walking. The symptoms completely resolved after decompressive lumbar laminectomy.
