Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (IPT-like FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that most commonly arises in the spleen or liver and is frequently misdiagnosed due to nonspecific clinical and imaging features. We report the case of a 46-year-old man presenting with intermittent left upper abdominal discomfort and an incidentally detected splenic mass. Ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a heterogeneous lesion with relatively marked arterial-phase enhancement and persistent internal heterogeneity on the ve

Serous cystic neoplasms are relatively uncommon and rarely possess malignant potential. We report a rare case of pancreatic serous cystadenoma with splenic invasion in a female in her 60s. Dynamic contrast-enhanced CT revealed a 3 cm mass in the tail of the pancreas. The lesion showed marked enhancement in the arterial phase on dynamic CT, which extended into the spleen. No cystic components were detected in the pancreatic mass on either magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography or T 2 weighted imaging. No metastasis or lymph node swelling was detected. Based on the hypervascularity of the t

Small localized hemangiomas are common neoplasms of the spleen. Isolated diffuse splenic hemangiomatosis, however, is very rare. This lesion can be accompanied by severe hypersplenism and other complications. We report on a case with significant splenomegaly caused by diffuse hemangiomatosis, which was an incidental finding without any clinical disorders. After splenectomy, the normal parenchyma was found to be widely replaced by multiple spongy nodules. Histologically, cavernous vessels were distributed throughout the whole organ, with endothelial cells expressing vimentin, factor VIII and CD

OBJECTIVE: Splenic masses have a high prevalence and are more common than diffuse splenic enlargement in dogs. It was the aim of the present study to retrospectively describe clinical aspects and histopathologic characteristics of dogs with splenic masses.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Records of patients with a histologically diagnosed splenic mass between January 2000 and March 2011 were reviewed.
RESULTS: 249 dogs met the inclusion criteria and could be included in the study. Splenic masses were diagnosed histologically as non-malignant disease (n=117; 47%) and malignant splenic disease (n=132; 5

Hodgkin lymphoma is a form of malignant lymphoid neoplasm. It can have various clinical presentations such as prolonged fever, night sweats, weight loss and asymptomatic lymphadenopathy. It has a distinct fever pattern known as Pel Ebstein fever. However, in some instances, its clinical presentation can mimic some tropical infections. Here, we present a case of primary splenic lymphoma masquerading as splenic abscess in a 53-yearold man with underlying dyslipidemia.

OBJECTIVES: Although the technique of distal pancreatectomy with or without en bloc splenectomy has been well described, the execution of this procedure may be technically challenging when performed laparoscopically. In this technical report, we aimed to describe the technique of laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy with or without splenic preservation.
DISCUSSION: Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy with or without splenectomy is a safe and effective surgical approach for the correction of various conditions. It has been proven to be a feasible solution for the treatment of benign inflammatory

Splenic arteriovenous fistulas (SAVFs) with splenic vein aneurysms are extremely rare entities. There have been no prior reports of SAVFs developing after laparoscopic pancreatectomy. Here, we report the first case. A 40-year-old man underwent a laparoscopic, spleen-preserving, distal pancreatectomy for an endocrine neoplasm of the pancreatic tail. Three months after surgery, a computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated an SAVF with a dilated splenic vein. The SAVF, together with the splenic vein aneurysm, was successfully treated using percutaneous transarterial coil embolization of the splen

Peliosis is a rare vascular lesion that is usually found in the liver, and less frequently in other hematolymphoid organs. We report a case of isolated splenic peliosis discovered in a 65-year-old man with an erysipelas and a thrombocytopenia. The computed tomography abdominal scan revealed an heterogen multinodular splenic mass. Splenectomy was performed and platelet counts returned to normal levels. The histopathologic examination revealed dilations of sinuses in the red pulp. The endothelial cells lining cavities stain for CD8 and CD31 but not for CD34. Splenic peliosis is a rare benign dis

Littoral cell angioma is a very rare benign splenic neoplasm with typical morphological features. It is difficult to differentiate this angioma from other benign or malignant splenic tumors. It is a unique vascular tumor followed by abdominal pain or detected incidentally during examination. Incidence of this tumor is small, as only few appropriate cases were described in the literature. We present successful surgical treatment of littoral cell angioma of the spleen. The issues of clinical course, diagnosis, therapeutic tactics, morphologic and histochemical features are discussed.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is a rare state that accounts for only <1 % of splenic ruptures. One of the causes of ASR is splenic neoplasm such as angiosarcoma. The treatment strategy for ASR is still unclear given the small number of cases reported in detail.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain with shock was referred to our hospital. Emergency computed tomography revealed splenic rupture, and hemodynamic stabilization was obtained by emergent vascular embolization. Rebleeding occurred 27 days after the initial treatment, and

Left-sided portal hypertension (LSPH) is caused by isolated obstruction (in most cases--thrombosis) of splenic vein. In about 50% of patients it generates a haemorrhage from gastric or oesophageal varices, rarer from other sources in abdominal cavity. The most common origin of the splenic vein thrombosis is a pancreatic disease--acute or chronic pancreatitis or neoplasm. The procedure of choice in the management of the haemorrhage in these cases is splenectomy. The advantages of prophylactic splenectomy in LSPH have not been verified yet.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous splenic rupture is well recognized in the context of hematological malignancies (lymphoproliferative and myeloproliferative disorders); a few case reports have also linked solid tumors, such as pancreatic and liver cancer, with the occurrence of spontaneous splenic rupture. This is the first case report of lung cancer as a likely cause of spontaneous splenic rupture.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old Caucasian woman presented to our hospital with non-specific symptoms. She developed an 'acute' abdomen and went into a state of shock within twelve hours of her presentat

Malignant lymphoproliferative disorders in the spleen may be primary (usually designated as splenic lymphoma) or secondary (due to progression of nodal or extra nodal lymphoid neoplasms) and represent an underestimated cause of splenomegaly, partially due to the decreasing frequency of splenectomy in our era of personalized molecular medicine [...].

Primary myelofibrosis is a hematologic neoplasm characterized by bone marrow fibrosis and extramedullary hematopoiesis. A similar clinical condition can occur at late stage of myeloproliferative neoplasms such as polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia. Although allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is currently the only curative strategy for both conditions, massive splenomegaly frequently observed in patients with myelofibrosis is considered to be a risk factor for graft failure or engraftment delay after transplantation. A proportion of patients can benefit from

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is used for early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer, but evidence on the magnitude of overall protection and protection according to anatomical site through colonoscopy performed in the community setting is sparse. We assessed whether receiving a colonoscopy in the preceding 10-year period, compared with no colonoscopy, was associated with prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasms (defined as cancers or advanced adenomas) at various anatomical sites.
METHODS: A statewide cross-sectional study was conducted among 3287 participants in screening colonoscopy

Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a unique lesion of the spleen that arises from the cells lining the venous sinuses of the splenic red pulp and shows the features of combined endothelial and histiocytic differentiation. Several cases of LCA have been reported in the literature; however, the cytological findings have been described for only a few cases. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy with anemia, epigastric abdominal pain, and splenomegaly. The splenic lesions showed anastomosing vascular channels with cyst-like spaces filled by many sloughed endothelial cells, which were positive for C

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor(IMT)is a rare neoplasm. IMTs are found in a number of locations throughout the body, but splenic involvement is uncommon. One case of splenic IMT is described. A 42-year-old woman presented with anterior chest pain and was found to have a splenic mass by computed tomography(CT). Fluorine-18-FDG-PET showed no FDG accumulation in the spleen. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)at 6 months follow-up showed an increase in the size of the tumor. We performed splenectomy for a suspected malignant tumor. The surgical specimen was a gray-white mass in the spleen. The mass

Occasionally, heterotopic splenic tissue can occur in the renal fossa secondary to splenosis following splenic trauma or splenectomy. Rarely, it can represent a developmental anomaly secondary to fusion of splenic and renal tissues. Splenorenal fusion can present as a renal mass, mimicking primary or secondary renal neoplasm on imaging studies, or with symptoms of hypersplenism (anaemia). To our knowledge, only seven cases of splenorenal fusion have been previously reported and the present case is only the second presentation in a young child. We report a case of splenorenal fusion in a 26-mon

Primary splenic angiosarcoma is a rare neoplasm. The symptomatology is highly variable, the diagnosis can be made usually at autopsy. The prognosis of the tumor is uniformly poor. Splenectomy prior to rupture prolongs survival. The authors describe the case of primary splenic angiosarcoma in an 54-year-old man and some diagnostic problems connected with it. The symptomatology causes diagnostic difficulties. The patient only presented weakness, enlargement of circumference of the abdomen and high hypochromic anaemia. The diagnosis was made premortem at the time of splenectomy, as a result of hi

The diagnosis of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma is often challenging, especially in extramedullary tissues where the differential diagnosis includes nodal marginal zone lymphoma, splenic marginal zone lymphoma, or other small B-cell neoplasms with plasmacytic differentiation. The MYD88 L265P mutation has been recently identified in >90% of bone-marrow-based lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, but the incidence of this abnormality and corresponding morphologic correlates in nodal lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma have not been established. We analyzed 87 cases of extramedullary lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, splenic
