Spondylolysis is a unilateral or bilateral defect of the interarticular region of a vertebra, most commonly in the lumbar spine. This pathology occurs frequently in young athletes and leads to spondylolisthesis in 75% of cases. Athletically active patients generally wish to continue their sports activity. This article aims to present literature-based recommendations and our personal experience regarding sports participation in children and adolescents suffering from spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis. We conclude that sports participation is possible despite spondylolysis in individuals of gr

AIM: To determine the frequency of spondylolysis (SLi) in children examined due to trauma, which has not been reported before in Turkey, and to discuss the demographic features of these cases together with accompanying secondary pathologies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 2013 and June 2023, lumbar computed tomography (CT) scans performed due to trauma for children aged between 0 and 18 years were evaluated. Demographic data of the patients, the unilateral or bilateral occurrence of SLi, and additional findings detected on CT scans were recorded. Differences between Turkish citizens an

Spondylolysis is a common diagnosis with a high prevalence in children and adolescents complaining of low back pain. It may be caused by either a defect or fracture of the pars interarticularis due to mechanical stress. Depending on the severity of the spondylolysis and symptoms associated it may be treated either conservatively or surgically, both of which have shown significant success. Conservative treatments such as bracing and decreased activity have been shown to be most effective with patients who have early diagnosis and treatment. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) in addition to

Pediatric spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis present with a wide spectrum of pathology and clinical findings, including back pain, leg pain, crouch gait, or neurological deficit. The treatment of spondylolysis alone is typically conservative with bracing, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and activity restriction, but refractory pain can be successfully surgically managed with intralaminar compression screw, wires, or pedicle screws with rods and laminar hook constructs. The treatment of dysplastic spondylolisthesis is aggressive to prevent neurological deficit, whereas even high-grade is

PURPOSE: To review outcome of 44 children who underwent conservative or surgical treatment for spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis.
METHODS: Records of 25 male and 19 female children aged 5 to 14 (mean, 10.2) years who underwent conservative (n=39) or surgical (n=5) treatment for spondylolysis (n=19) or spondylolisthesis (n=25) were reviewed. Conservative treatment involved application of a thoracolumbosacral orthotic brace for all day except bedtime until symptoms resolved and then physiotherapy including exercises to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles and stretching exercises of the h

A review of the current literature shows that there is a lack of consensus regarding the treatment of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in children and adolescents. Most of the views and recommendations provided in various reports are weakly supported by evidence. There is a limited amount of information about the natural history of the condition, making it difficult to compare the effectiveness of various conservative and operative treatments. This systematic review summarises the current knowledge on spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis and attempts to present a rational approach to the eva

The therapy for spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis is challenging in view of the large variety of treatment options. A general, standardized therapeutic concept has still not been established. Adequate therapy depends on different parameters and personal experience. Beside direct repair surgery of spondylolysis and low grade spondylolisthesis, dorsal, ventral and combined dorsoventral surgery, with or without instrumentation, are indicated depending on patients age and severity of the slip. Complications such as pseudarthrosis and progression of the slip develop in a given percentage of cases

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the presence of spondylolysis at L2 in identical twins.
CLINICAL FEATURES: Twin 61-year-old brothers reported insidious low back pain (LBP) of relatively recent onset. Both engaged in running as their main form of exercise. One had spondylolisthesis and history of significant traumatic incident; the other had no spondylolisthesis but a much more strenuous running regimen.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: Both patients underwent a course of chiropractic treatment for mechanical LBP and reported a 50% overall improvement in symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS: Spondylolysis at L2 is uncommon

Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis occur predominantly in the lower lumbar spine. Besides congenital defects such as predisposition of spondylolysis the correlation between competitive sports activities and an increased incidence of spondylolysis is proved. In early stages, complete healing can be achieved by conservative treatment (abstinence from sports activities for 3 months, orthesis). Persistence of pain, neurologic symptoms and progression of vertebral slipping are indications for operative treatment (reconstruction of the isthmus, dorso-ventral spondylodesis). The exercise tolerance d

This paper reports on three cases of symptomatic low back pain in three paratroopers in association with bilateral L5 spondylolysis and L5 on S1 spondylolisthesis. The controversy regarding the etiology of this lesion as well as the problems of establishing causality when associated with parachuting injuries are discussed. These cases raise the issue of whether routine lumbar spine roentgenography should be performed as part of the pre-course medical screening prior to an individual undertaking basic parachutist training, and stress the need for further study of the relevance of these lesions

Two cases of cervical spondylolisthesis are reported, and the relevant English language literature is reviewed. Analysis of data derived from all of the cases reported revealed no statistically significant etiological or prognostic factors. The roentgenological evaluation, including associated anomalous findings, is presented. Etiological and clinical aspects of cervical spondylolisthesis are discussed. It is concluded that cervical spondylolysis is a relatively rare congenital defect. The role of manipulative therapy in the treatment of associated symptoms is discussed.

A case of nontraumatic spondylolysis of the axis vertebra is presented. A 55-year-old man suddenly experienced nausea and dizziness on January 15, 1984 when he rotated his neck toward the left. Since this episode, he experienced the same attacks twice. On examination, the patient was afraid of moving his neck abruptly and on gradual hyperextension of his neck, he started to complain of slight dizziness. But otherwise no abnormalities of motor, sensory and cerebellar functions were noticed. Lateral view of plain films of the cervical spine revealed a bilateral bony defect in the lamina of the a

Seventy index patients and 222 first-degree relatives with spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis have been studied by means of interview and clinical and radiological examinations. The index patients had an average age of 18 years, and included 43 females and 27 males. Following Wiltse's classification, 18 patients had dysplastic lesions and 52 had isthmic defects. The first-degree relatives included 99 parents and 125 siblings and children of the index patients. Both isthmic and dysplastic defects occurred in most families, regardless of the classification of the index patient. Isthmic defects w

There are 3 mechanisms that may result in failure of the neural arch with or without displacement of the vertebral body of the pathological vertebral: flexion overload, unbalanced shear forces and forced rotation. It is understood that all types of overload may be applied simultaneously and in various combinations. Of all the forces acting on the lumbar spine torsional violence is the most disruptive of the neural arch. Besides causing olisthesis, it is also capable of producing lysis of the pars especially if the dorsal spine has the added restraint of high tensile stresses in the posterior l
