A study on canine dirofilariasis in selected areas of Sri Lanka.

OBJECTIVES: Canine dirofilariasis is a mosquito borne zoonotic filarial parasitic disease caused by Dirofilaria species. In Sri Lanka, human dirofilariasis is endemic and well documented. Even though canine dirofilariasis is an established infection among dog populations in Sri Lanka, the prevalence and risk factors were not documented in Kanthale divisional secretariat, Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of dirofilariasis and to identify the exposure-related risk factors in dogs using an interviewer administered questionna

Changing epidemiology of dengue in Sri Lanka-Challenges for the future.

BACKGROUND: Dengue infections are on the rise in Sri Lanka and are spreading to all areas in the country. Here, we discuss the changes in dengue epidemiology in Sri Lanka in relation to changes in age distribution, changes in seroprevalence rates over time, and possible reasons contributing to such changes. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Although the incidence of dengue increased 20-fold from the year 2000 to 2012 and a further 3-fold from 2012 to 2019, this increase is not reflected in a similar increase in the age-stratified seropositivity rates for dengue. For instance, the annual seroconversion ra

Estimating the burden of leptospirosis in Sri Lanka; a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Although the assessment of disease burden should be a priority for allocating resources, leptospirosis is grossly underestimated despite its true burden in Sri Lanka. This study aimed to assess the morbidity and mortality of leptospirosis based on routine surveillance data, hospital reported data and scientific publications from Sri Lanka. METHOD: A systematic review was carried out, and Pub Med, MEDLINE®, BIOSIS Previews, Zoological Record, Web of Science Core Collection, Current Contents Connect, KCI-Korean Journal Database, BIOSIS Citation Index, Data Citation Index, SciELO Cit

Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis, a vector borne tropical/subtropical disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania is transmitted to humans by sandfly vectors Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia. The principal form found in Sri Lanka is cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and is caused by Leishmania donovani. A rising trend in disease prevalence has been observed recently in Sri Lanka and the island is in fact the newest endemic focus in South Asia. Determining the prevalence of smear positivity among clinically suspected CL patients, identifying risk factors and specific clinical presentations of CL in order to implem

History and development of laboratory animal science in Sri Lanka.

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo (UCFM), is the forerunner in the laboratory animal science (LAS) field in Sri Lanka. Here laboratory animals such as rats, frogs and rabbits were used in medical education to demonstrate physiological principles in the early 1950s. The establishment of the first animal house in 1969 at UCFM better facilitated the use of laboratory animals in medical education and research. By 2006, lack of ethical guide lines was an issue and a set of ethical guidelines was developed and published in 2009, which today are followed by researchers and reviewers in m

CHARACTERISTICS OF PHLEBOTOMINE SANDFLIES IN SELECTED AREAS OF SRI LANKA.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic disease in Sri Lanka. Studies on vector aspects, although important for better understanding of disease transmission dynamics, are still limited. The present study describes the species distribution and behavioral patterns of sandflies within selected disease-prevalent zones in the country. Adult sandflies were collected from several field sites over a two-year duration in Sri Lanka using cattle-baited net traps, CDC light traps and manual methods. Species identification was performed using standard keys. Leishmania donovani and source of blood meal i

Patterns of rhinosporidiosis in Sri Lanka: comparison with international data.

One hundred forty-three cases of rhinosporidiosis, confirmed by smear or biopsy, treated in two major General Hospitals in Sri Lanka over a 14 year period (1995-2009) were analyzed in regard to their epidemiological, clinical, clinicopathological, immunological and microbiological features. Regional variations in incidence, age and sex distribution, bathing history, and histopathology were seen. Lacustrine waters were the commonest probable source of infection (84%). Rivers were a source of Rhinosporidium seeberi in Sri Lanka (11%) and domestic well water was a probable source in 5%. The epide

Selection of students for admission to a medical school in Sri Lanka.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the extent to which selected entry point factors predicted success in a Sri Lankan medical school. METHODS: The study sample consisted of all students in two consecutive entry cohorts. Marks obtained at the national university entrance examination in physics, chemistry, botany and zoology; the aggregate marks of these four subjects (the only academic criterion used in selection); the district of entry (the other, non-academic criterion); and gender, were identified as entry point variables. Success in a medical school was measured in five ways, including whether a studen

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in Sri Lanka as determined by PCR.

Fifty-seven Sinhalese patients were investigated for the presence of Helicobacter pylori by PCR. A prevalence of 70.1%, with 47.5% positive for cagA, was demonstrated. The most common vacA allele was s1am1. There was no significant association between either the s1 allele or the cagA allele and severe gastroduodenal disease. There was an association between the s1 allele and the cagA locus.

Geo-helminth infections in a rural area of Sri Lanka.

School children carry the heaviest burden of morbidity due to intestinal helminth infection. The objective of this investigation was to study geo-helminth infections in 349 school children aged 6 to 13 years living in a rural area of Sri Lanka. Stool samples were examined by direct saline smear in an initial survey to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and thereafter the children were followed up over a two year period with cross sectional surveys of stool samples being carried out at yearly intervals. Following collection of a stool sample, all the subjects were treat

The isolation of Burkholderia cepacia in a hospital setting in Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Burkholderia cepacia is widely prevalent in nature. The natural habitat of this organism is soil, water and vegetation, but the hospital environment remains the main source of infection. It causes a wide variety of infections in hospitalised patients. Since there are no reports of its prevalence in Sri Lanka, a data retrieval and analysis was undertaken to determine its incidence among patients at Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital (SJGH). OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, morphological characteristics, biochemical profile and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of B cepac

A case of homozygous sickle cell disease in Sri Lanka.

An 11 year old Muslim boy with a 2 month history of fever, loss of appetite, pallor and abdominal distension, had hepato-splenomegaly. Haemoglobin electrophoresis showed the presence of haemoglobins S and F, with complete absence of haemoglobin A. The sickling test was positive. Marital consanguinity was present. In both parents, the sickling test was positive and haemoglobin electrophoresis showed the presence of haemoglobins A and S. This is the first report of homozygous sickle cell disease in Sri Lanka.

A serologic study of California serogroup bunyaviruses in Sri Lanka.

A seroepidemiologic study of California (CAL) serogroup viruses (genus bunyavirus, family Bunyaviridae) was carried out on 952 human and 1,834 animal sera collected from different ecological zones of Sri Lanka (latitudes 5-10 degrees N, longitudes 79-82 degrees E). The sera were screened for neutralizing antibody to Lumbo (LUM), snowshoe hare (SSH), and trivittatus (TVT) viruses by plaque neutralization tests on Vero cells. Of 2,786 sera screened, 262 (9.5%) had antibody to one or more viruses Twenty-two sera, selected to represent different species of origin and reaction profiles, were titrat

The significance of the gastrointestinal parasites of Asian buffalo in Sri Lanka.

Buffalo aged 3-15 months on institutional farms and in the villages of an irrigation project were monitored for gastrointestinal nematodes by faecal egg counts over two years. Apart from treatment for Toxocara vitulorum at 10-16 days of age, no anthelmintics were used. Half of the strongylid egg counts were zero and 90% were less than 500 epg of faeces on the institutional farms, and 67% were zero and 97% less than 500 epg in the villages. No problems arose during four years without anthelmintics on the institutional farms and during two years in the villages. Autopsies demonstrated that the e

A comparison of Norinyl and Brevicon in three sites in Sri Lanka.

A set of 3 four-cell randomized, blind clinical trials was carried out in Sri Lanka to evaluate the impact of vitamin supplements and different oral contraceptive formulations. This paper concentrates on the comparisons of oral contraceptives. There seems to be no important difference between Norinyl, a standard-dose oral contraceptive, and Brevicon of a lower estrogen dosage--in either continuation or side effects. Continuation at one site was higher among Norinyl users, but several factors led us to the belief that this difference was due to differences in field worker performance rather tha

Determinants of birthweight in rural Sri Lanka; a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying determinants of birthweight among disadvantaged communities is critical to further reducing the inequitable burden of perinatal health issues in low-and-middle income settings. Therefore, we adopted a bio-psycho-social approach to identify the determinants of birthweight in a mother-infant cohort from a rural setting in Sri Lanka, a lower-middle-income country. METHODS: All third-trimester pregnant women with a singleton pregnancy registered for the national antenatal care programme at Ipalogama health division in 2017 were invited for a prospective cohort study.
