Assessing morphological changes in the choroid plexus between standing and supine positions using a rotatable MRI system.

The choroid plexus (ChP) is crucial for most cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) secretion. However, few studies have explored the morphology of ChP in a natural upright posture. This study investigated the positional, areal, and volumetric changes of the ChP in response to gravity when comparing supine and upright scanning postures. Thirty-one healthy volunteers underwent MRI scans using an innovative 1.5T rotatable MRI at pitch angles of 0 and 90 employing a 3D magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (MP-RAGE) sequence. Based on an in-house ChP segmentation pipeline, gap lengths between the ChP and

Spatial distribution of stiffness between and within muscles in paretic and healthy individuals during prone and standing positions.

This study investigated the inter- and intramuscular variability of plantar flexors stiffness during prone and standing positions at different muscle lengths in healthy and paretic individuals. To access tissue stiffness, shear wave elastography (SWE) measurements were carried out on two groups: control group (CG; n=14; age 43.9±9.6 years; body mass index [BMI]=24.5±2.5 kg/m2) and stroke survivor group (SSG; n=14; age 43.9±9.6 years; BMI=24.5±2.5 kg/m2). Shear Modulus (μ, kPa) within three plantar flexors (the gastrocnemius medialis [GM], gastrocnemius lateralis [GL], and soleus [SOL]) was obt

International Society of Sports Nutrition Position Stand: Effects of essential amino acid supplementation on exercise and performance.

Position Statement: The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) presents this position based on a critical examination of literature surrounding the effects of essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation on skeletal muscle maintenance and performance. This position stand is intended to provide a scientific foundation to athletes, dietitians, trainers, and other practitioners as to the benefits of supplemental EAA in both healthy and resistant (aging/clinical) populations. EAAs are crucial components of protein intake in humans, as the body cannot synthesize them. The daily recommended

Effects of arm and leg positions on lumbar multifidus muscle activity while on hands and knees or while standing.

BACKGROUND: The lumbar multifidus (LMF) muscle, which is involved in the mechanical stability of the lumbar spine, reportedly undergoes atrophy in patients with low back pain. Preventing or mitigating low back pain requires strengthening the LMF muscle; however, methods for triggering selective and significant contraction of this muscle have not been fully studied. This study aims to clarify how, in the hands-and-knees or standing position, the position of the arm and leg on one side affects the activity of the lumbar erector spinae (LES) and LMF muscles. METHODS: We recruited nine adult men

Pelvic and spinal postural changes between standing-sitting positions following lumbosacral fusion: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Prospective pre-operative and post-operative comparative analysis of radiographic spino-pelvic parameters between sitting versus standing positions of patients with LS fusion, to detect adaptation mechanisms around fused spinal segments. METHODS: Sixteen patients aged 53.9 ± 15.9 who underwent LS fusion between L3 and S1 were extracted from the database of an ongoing prospective study. Different spino-pelvic parameters were evaluated on full spine X-rays, standing, then sitting straight. Parameters were compared pre-operative versus post-operative, and on standing versus sitting X-ra

Difference in the airway luminal area between the standing and supine positions using upright and conventional computed tomography.

No clinical studies to date have compared the airway luminal area between supine and standing positions. Our aim was therefore to compare the airway luminal area between these two positions on computed tomography (CT) and to determine its correlation with forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). Thirty-two asymptomatic volunteers underwent both conventional (supine position) and upright (standing position) CT during deep inspiration breath-holding. Pulmonary function tests were conducted on the same day. We measured the airway luminal area on CT in each position. Paired t-tests and Pearson's co

The effect of age on sagittal plane profile of the lumbar spine according to standing, supine, and various sitting positions.

BACKGROUND: The sagittal alignment of the spine changes depending on body posture and degenerative changes. This study aimed to observe changes in sagittal alignment of the lumbar spine with different positions (standing, supine, and various sitting postures) and to verify the effect of aging on lumbar sagittal alignment. METHODS: Whole-spine lateral radiographs were obtained for young volunteers (25.4 ± 2.3 years) and elderly volunteers (66.7 ± 1.7 years). Radiographs were obtained in standing, supine, and sitting (30°, 60°, and 90°) positions respectively. We compared the radiological chang

Comparison of the inter-recti distance in nulliparous women measured in supine and standing positions using ultrasound imaging.

In physiotherapy for pregnancy-related diastasis recti abdominis, the inter-recti distance (IRD) measurement using ultrasound imaging is typically performed with the patient in supine position. Recently, a standing position, which is considered a functional body position, has been proposed for measurement. However, before adopting standing examination as routine, it is important to study how the linea alba behaves in this position in healthy nulliparas. The main objectives of the study were to compare (1) IRD at two measurement sites between standing and supine positions, and (2) IRD between t

[Finite element analysis of skeletal injury mechanisms in adult standing positions with both feet landed on the ground].

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and complexity of high-fall injuries pose major challenges to injury-mechanism interpretation, which currently relies largely on forensic autopsy. The finite element method (FEM) can elucidate biomechanical mechanisms of skeletal injury and quantify the relationship between fracture risk and fall height, providing evidence for forensic injury analysis and scene reconstruction. METHODS: Using adult upright feet-first landing as a representative scenario, a finite element approach based on the total human model for safety (THUMS) was applied to simulate bilateral feet

Persons with type 1 diabetes have low blood oxygen levels in the supine and standing body positions.

INTRODUCTION: Blood oxygen saturation is low compared with healthy controls (CONs) in the supine body position in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and has been associated with complications. Since most of daily life occurs in the upright position, it is of interest if this also applies in the standing body position. In addition, tissue oxygenation in other anatomical sites could show different patterns in T1D. Therefore, we investigated blood, arm and forehead oxygen levels in the supine and standing body positions in individuals with T1D (n=129) and CONs (n=55). RESEARCH DESIGN AND MET

Change in pelvic incidence between the supine and standing positions in patients with bilateral sacroiliac joint vacuum signs.

OBJECTIVE: Pelvic incidence (PI) is a commonly utilized spinopelvic parameter in the evaluation and treatment of patients with spinal deformity and is believed to be a fixed parameter. However, a fixed PI assumes that there is no motion across the sacroiliac (SI) joint, which has been disputed in recent literature. The objective of this study was to determine if patients with SI joint vacuum sign have a change in PI between the supine and standing positions. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified patients with a standing radiograph, supine radiograph, and CT scan encompassing the SI

Standing position alone or in combination with exercise as a stress test to provoke left ventricular outflow tract gradient in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and other conditions.

Measuring left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient by echocardiography in decubitus position, which is used in routine clinical practice, does not reflect the pathophysiology of this dynamic abnormality during daily activities, which trigger the symptoms. LVOT obstruction is dynamic and greatly dependent upon the left ventricular cavity size, geometric configuration of hypertrophy, load, contractility and mitral apparatus abnormalities, including systolic anterior motion of mitral leaflet. Importantly, LVOT gradient may develop not only in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but also in other h

Do the three-dimensional parameters of brace-wearing patients with AIS change when transitioning from standing to sitting position? A preliminary study on Lenke I.

BACKGROUND: Bracing is the most common conservative treatment for preventing the progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in patients with a curve of 25°-40°. X-ray examinations are traditionally performed in the standing position. However, school-age teenagers may take more time to sit. Thus far, little is known about three-dimensional (3D) correction in the sitting position. Hence, this study aimed to determine the effects of standing and sitting positions on 3D parameters during brace correction. METHODS: We evaluated a single-center cohort of patients receiving conservative tr

Relationship between Intervertebral Disc Compression Force and Sagittal Spinopelvic Lower Limb Alignment in Elderly Women in Standing Position with Patient-Specific Whole Body Musculoskeletal Model.

The intervertebral disc loading based on compensated standing posture in patients with adult spinal deformity remains unclear. We analyzed the relationship between sagittal alignment and disc compression force (Fm). In 14 elderly women, the alignment of the sagittal spinopelvic and lower extremities was measured. Fm was calculated using the Anybody Modeling System. Patients were divided into low sagittal vertical axis (SVA) and high SVA groups. Comparisons between the two groups were performed and the relationship between the Fm and each parameter was examined using Spearman's correlation coef

Does obesity affect acetabular cup position, spinopelvic function and sagittal spinal alignment? A prospective investigation with standing and sitting assessment of primary hip arthroplasty patients.

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) instability is influenced by acetabular component positioning, spinopelvic function and sagittal spinal alignment. Obesity is considered as a risk factor of THA instability, but the causal relationship remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the influence of BMI on (1) spinopelvic function (lumbar flexibility, pelvic mobility and hip motion), (2) sagittal spinal alignment pre- and postoperatively and (3) acetabular cup position postoperatively in primary THA patients in a prospective setting. METHODS: One hundred ninety patients receiving prim

Difference in Lumbar Lordosis Between Supine and Standing Positions: A Comprehensive Indicator of Spinal Sagittal Imbalance and Bone Density.

BACKGROUND: Spino-pelvic parameters are commonly used to assess clinical outcomes in lumbar degenerative diseases, but static measures do not capture dynamic spinal changes. This study investigates the difference in lumbar lordosis (DiLL) between supine and standing positions, reflecting lumbar flexibility and compensation, as a novel indicator of sagittal imbalance and its correlation with bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: DiLL was defined as supine lumbar lordosis (LL) minus standing LL. Patients were categorized into DiLL (+) (supine LL > standing LL) and DiLL (-) (supine LL ≤ standing
