Impact of Pneumococcal and Viral Pneumonia on the Respiratory and Intestinal Tract Microbiomes of Mice.

With 2.56 million deaths worldwide annually, pneumonia is one of the leading causes of death. The most frequent causative pathogens are Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza A virus. Lately, the interaction between the pathogens, the host, and its microbiome have gained more attention. The microbiome is known to promote the immune response toward pathogens; however, our knowledge on how infections affect the microbiome is still scarce. Here, the impact of colonization and infection with S. pneumoniae and influenza A virus on the structure and function of the respiratory and gastrointestinal m

Variations in cow milk and teat skin microbiota across the lactation cycle with intramammary cephalosporin use at dry-off.

Cephalosporins and other broad-spectrum antibiotics are frequently administered prophylactically into the udder when dairy cows end their lactation cycle, termed dry-off, to reduce mastitis risk. However, the use of antibiotics on cows that do not have signs of infection may result in the selection of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and negatively alter the udder microbiome. In this study, the effects of intramammary cephalosporin therapy with Cephapirin (CB) or Ceftiofur (CH) on milk and teat skin microbiota were examined for three dairies in California. Intramammary injections were given

16S rRNA sequencing in chronic dacryocystitis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The pathogenesis of chronic dacryocystitis (CDC) is associated with a variety of bacteria. Investigating microflora has the potential to provide a theoretical basis for preventing and treating CDC. BACKGROUND: 16S rRNA sequencing is a sequence-based bacterial analysis. The application of 16S rRNA sequencing in CDC is rarely reported. METHODS: A case-control study of infected and healthy eyes diagnosed as CDC patients was conducted. Seventy-eight patients were divided into A (conjunctival sac secretions from healthy eyes), B (conjunctival sac secretions from affected eyes)

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG treatment improves intestinal permeability and modulates microbiota dysbiosis in an experimental model of sepsis.

Decrease of 'health‑benefiting' microbes and increase of pathogenic bacteria (a condition termed dysbiosis) in intensive care unit patients is considered to induce or aggravate sepsis (gut‑origin sepsis). Orally administered probiotics have been effective in the prevention of nosocomial infections. However, the mechanisms of probiotic‑induced anti‑infection and anti‑sepsis remain to be explored. In the present study, 4‑week‑old C57BL6 mice were orally administrated with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) or normal saline (control) 4 weeks prior to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). A subset of t

Detection of Non-Aureus Staphylococci and Mammaliicocci from Ready-To-Eat Food Retailed in Lagos, Nigeria.

Non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) and mammalicocci (collectively NASM) are coagulase-negative staphylococci, though they are less well-known than Staphylococcus aureus. Certain species within the NASM group have been associated with foodborne illnesses due to their ability to produce enterotoxins that are similar to those produced by S. aureus. In this study, 180 samples of ready-to-eat foods were examined, including 30 samples each of soybean cheese, cow milk cheese, yogurt, and meat pie, along with 60 samples of mixed vegetables. Isolation of the bacteria was performed using selective culture m

Exploring the alterations and function of skin microbiome mediated by ionizing radiation injury.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced skin injury (RISI) is still the most common and severe side effect of radiotherapy. The role of the skin's microbial barrier in the pathogenesis and progression of RISI needs to be fully investigated. METHODS: This study aimed to explore the alterations in and functions of the skin microbiota in RISI. We applied the unculturable approach to characterize the cutaneous microbiomes of a radiation-induced animal model by sequencing the V1-V3 regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Combined with the downloaded clinical data of patients, a comprehensive analysis

Occurrence of oxazolidinone resistance genes in enterococci, staphylococci, and Mammaliicoccus sciuri from swine slaughterhouse wastewater, Italy.

Oxazolidinones (linezolid and tedizolid) are last-resort antibiotics used to treat severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. Although linezolid is not approved for veterinary use, resistant bacteria—particularly enterococci—have increasingly been reported in food-producing animals worldwide. Slaughterhouses represent potential hotspots for the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens along the food chain. This study investigated the presence of oxazolidinone resistance genes and relevant genetic elements in florfenicol-resistant enterococci and staphyloco

Changes in intestinal microflora and its metabolites underlie the cognitive impairment in preterm rats.

BACKGROUND: The brain development of preterm infants is easily affected by various adverse extrauterine factors and complications, resulting in abnormal neurological and cognitive development. Recent studies have found that there is a significant correlation between intestinal microbial changes and cognitive behavior. Nevertheless, the correlation between the cognitive impairment and abnormal changes of intestinal microflora in the preterm newborn has been rarely elucidated. AIM: To analyze the differences of fecal intestinal flora, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and microbiota-gut-brain axi

Microevolution of cytochrome bd oxidase in Staphylococci and its implication in resistance to respiratory toxins released by Pseudomonas.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are opportunistic pathogens and frequently coinfect the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. P. aeruginosa secretes an arsenal of small respiratory inhibitors, like pyocyanin, hydrogen cyanide, or quinoline N-oxides, that may act against the commensal flora as well as host cells. Here, we show that with respect to their susceptibility to these respiratory inhibitors, staphylococcal species can be divided into two groups: the sensitive group, comprised of pathogenic species such as S. aureus and S. epidermidis, and the resistant group, represented

Gemella morbillorum prosthetic valve endocarditis.

The authors describe a case of prosthetic valve infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Gemella morbillorum (GM), a gram-positive coccus that grows slowly in culture and occasionally causes a subacute to chronic form of IE. To the author's knowledge, this is the third case of GM prosthetic valve IE to be reported. Subacute to chronic IE caused by slow-growing organisms can be subtle in presentation and should be suspected in patients who have prosthetic valves presenting with worsening heart failure.
