Osteomyelitis is an infectious disease of the bone that primarily affects children. Here we discuss three patients, aged 11-13 years that were diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Despite the fact that in all three patients the infection was caused by the Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria, the clinical presentation and diagnostic results in all three was different. This case report presents various courses of the same disease, each with a slightly different treatment and outcome. Although the incidence of osteomyelitis is decreasing, it is of great importance to consider osteomyelitis as a diagnosis in

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus infection is known to cause a variety of neurologic complications, most involving the CNS, however, rarely have cases of S. aureus affecting the peripheral nervous system been reported in literature. We report a case of S. aureus toxin-mediated motor polyneuropathy in a patient presenting with acute flaccid quadriplegia.
CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old female with mantle cell lymphoma on oral chemotherapy with ibrutinib presents with malaise and progressive ascending bilateral lower extremity weakness. Blood cultures resulted positive for methicillin-sensitive S.

Background: Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus continue to plague surgical patients, whether as surgical site infections or other nosocomial infections that complicate surgical care. The only meaningful methods available to decrease the risk of developing such infections are topical skin antisepsis (pre-operative skin preparation) and peri-operative antibiotic prophylaxis, neither of which offer a panacea. Alternatives to the latter are sought so as to minimize antibiotic selection pressure as a factor in the increasing problem of antimicrobial drug resistance. This review considers th

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus saprophyticus is resistant to the drugs most often used for the empirical treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI). The adequacy of antimicrobial treatments prescribed for UTI due to S. saprophyticus is not usually questioned. This study described the epidemiology of such infections and assessed the susceptibility of S. saprophyticus to ceftriaxone and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid.
METHODS: Methicillin-susceptible S. saprophyticus (MSSS) isolated from clinical samples between November 2014 and July 2016 were included. Clinical data were recorded. The minimum inhib

CAMP test reliably detects Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) and Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus, GBS); it is traditionally performed streaking the tested isolate perpendicularly to Staphylococcus aureus (Sa), provided that reference Sa strains (that produce β-hemolysin) are used. In a zone of β-hemolysin activity, in fact, GBS and Lm form typical arrow-shaped hemolytic areas. While Sa production of the toxin is strain-dependent, however, that of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (Sp), a pet-owner colonizer and an emerging human pathogen, is constitutive, then observed in all clinical

Staphylococcus aureus accounts for 2-5% of the etiologies of community-acquired pneumonia. These infections occur mainly in elderly patients with comorbidity, after a respiratory viral infection. S. aureus could also be responsible for necrotizing pneumonia, which occurs in young subjects, also after flu. Necrotizing pneumonia are associated with the production of a particular staphylococcal toxin called Panton-Valentine leukocidin, responsible for pulmonary focal necrosis, occurrence haemoptysis, leucopenia, and death. In Europe, these strains are still predominantly sensitive to anti-staphyl

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical relevance and impact of an emerging bacterial pathogen, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, in a large teaching hospital.
METHODS: Three-year retrospective microbiological and clinical review of all S. lugdunensis isolates from a single medical center.
RESULTS: Seventy-seven isolates were identified; 70 had complete data. Soft tissue, bone, joint, central nervous system, urine and bloodstream infections occurred. Soft tissue infections were primarily abscesses. There were four infections of prosthetic joints and nine cases of osteomyelitis. There were 21 bacteremi

Infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have become more prevalent, in part because of the emergence and spread of community-acquired MRSA. This trend is particularly concerning because of the significant rates of morbidity and mortality associated with MRSA infections, and because MRSA strains are often resistant to many classes of antibiotics. Reports of infections of the head and neck, including wound infections, cellulitis, sinusitis, otitis media, and otitis externa, are well documented. However, to our knowledge, there have been no reports of bacterial laryng

Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen of humans and livestock. It causes a diverse array of diseases, ranging from relatively harmless localized skin infections to life-threatening systemic conditions. Among multiple virulence factors, staphylococci secrete several exotoxins directly associated with particular disease symptoms. These include toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1), enterotoxins, and exfoliative toxins (ETs). The latter are particularly interesting as the sole agents responsible for staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), a disease predominantly affecting infants an

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is epidemic in the community, differs from nosocomial MRSA in virulence, mechanisms, and antibiotic susceptibility, and exhibits diverse and often unique pathologic characteristics. The community-acquired MRSA USA 300 strains are transmitted largely by person-to-person contact and cause characteristic soft-tissue abscesses and, less commonly, other sometimes unusual and serious infections including a necrotizing pneumonia, and other necrotic infections such as necrotizing fasciitis, pelvic thrombophlebitis, and sep

Prostatitis is a common condition that is associated with a poor quality of life. A recent National Institutes of Health Consensus Panel classified prostatitis into the categories of acute bacterial, chronic bacterial, chronic nonbacterial, and asymptomatic. Bacterial prostatitis is usually caused by Escherichia coli and other gram-negative bacteria, but it is not frequently caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections are increasing. Moreover, 2 cases of methicillin-resistant S. aureus prostatic abscesses have been reported. We describe what w

We describe a case of native valve endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis, a perineal skin commensal, and review 28 other cases from the medical literature. Correctly identifying this coagulase-negative organism is critical because endocarditis is usually associated with left sided valvular disruption and life-threatening embolic complications, reminiscent of disease caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Urgent surgical intervention is necessary in most cases.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a form of systemic vasculitis. It is characterized by granulomatous inflammation in the upper and lower airways, vasculitis and necrotizing glomerulonephritis, and is strongly associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies against proteinase 3. Since the etiology of the disease is not clear, treatment, consisting of corticosteroids and immunosuppressives, is nonspecific and associated with severe side effects. Pinpointing the trigger(s) of the disease would highly improve treatment. Clinical evidence shows that an infectious agent, the bacterium Staphylo

Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) caused by enterotoxigenic staphylococci is one of the main food-borne diseases. In contrast to Staphylococcus aureus, a systematic screening for the enterotoxins has not yet been performed on the genomic level for the coagulase-positive species S. intermedius. Therefore, the enterotoxigenic potential of 281 different veterinary (canine, n = 247; equine, n = 23; feline, n = 9; other, n = 2) and 11 human isolates of S. intermedius was tested by using a multiplex PCR DNA-enzyme immunoassay system targeting the staphylococcal enterotoxin genes sea, seb, sec, sed

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria utilize an extensive array of molecular countermeasures to manipulate the defensive microenvironment of the infected host and colonize potentially any tissue. The secreted polypeptides referred to as superantigens are unique among these countermeasures, because they target the multireceptor communication between T cells and antigen-presenting cells that is fundamental to initiating pathogen-specific immune clearance. Superantigens play a critical role in toxic-shock syndrome and food poisoning, yet their function in routine infections is not well understood. Whil

Some 80 - 90% of all acute haematogenous osteomyelitis is caused by staphylococcus aureus. We suggest that this is due to the special ability of staphylococci to synthesise prostaglandins from appropriate precursors such as arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins, especially of the E series, are potent stimulators of bone resorption. Establishment of osteomyelitis could thus result from minor bone trauma and local release of prostaglandins and their precursors, followed by adventitious infection. Infection by staphylococcus aureus, but not by other bacteria, could then lead to a sudden surge in prost
