Tinea capitis mimicking tufted hair folliculitis.

We report a case of tinea capitis mimicking tufted hair folliculitis in a 56-year-old European man, who presented with a 4-year history of pain and erythema in an area of scarring alopecia of the occipital scalp, with scales and tufts of hair emerging from individual follicles. Histological examination showed hair plugging, and a dense perifollicular infiltrate of plasma cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils. There was widespread scarring and fibrosis. Bacterial cultures were negative for Staphylococcus aureus, but fungal cultures and periodic-acid-Schiff stain were positive for Trichophyton ton

Smartphone-based multispectral autofluorescence analysis of bacteria mixtures of staphylococci using convolutional neural network.

Despite the numerous merits of bioreceptor-based biosensors for detecting bacteria, they often fail to identify complex bacterial mixtures, such as those encountered in microbiome analysis, especially when the bacterial mixtures belong to the same genus. Additionally, their procedure involves multiple steps of reagent rinsing and/or staining. This work demonstrates the proof-of-concept for smartphone-based multispectral autofluorescence analysis of bacterial mixtures belonging to the same genus: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus capitis, and Staphylococcus

Clinical significance of coagulase-negative staphylococci other than S. epidermidis blood stream isolates at a tertiary care hospital.

PURPOSE: We retrospectively evaluated blood culture (BC) isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci other than Staphylococcus epidermidis (NonSe-CoNS) for clinical relevance at a tertiary care hospital in Germany from January 2011 to September 2015. METHODS: Clinical data were correlated to microbiological results based on medical records. Infection was considered likely if (1) no other infection and (2) two or more isolates of the same species were present and (3) symptoms ameliorated after therapy. Infection was considered possible if a foreign body was present and (1) and (3) were fulfil

Detection of bacteria in healthy spinal bone during pedicle screw placement: colonization versus evidence for future low-grade infection.

OBJECTIVE: Symptomatic implant failure presents a burdensome complication for patients undergoing spinal instrumentation. The origin of screw loosening remains a question of debate; mechanical load, patient-related factors, and the hypothesis of low-grade infections with biofilm production can contribute to the need for revision surgery. Scientific evidence lacks a prospective investigation of contributing factors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the causes of implant loosening, including microbiological analysis of the vertebral bone before instrumentation, using prospectivel

Possible Implications of Bacteriospermia on the Sperm Quality, Oxidative Characteristics, and Seminal Cytokine Network in Normozoospermic Men.

This study focused on the identification of bacterial profiles of semen in normozoospermic men and their possible involvement in changes to the sperm structural integrity and functional activity. Furthermore, we studied possible fluctuations of selected cytokines, oxidative markers, and antibacterial proteins as a result of bacterial presence in the ejaculate. Sperm motility was assessed with computer-assisted sperm analysis, while sperm apoptosis, necrosis and acrosome integrity were examined with fluorescent methods. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was quantified via luminometry, sp

Malassezia and Staphylococcus are associated with scalp seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common skin condition affecting the scalp and other sebaceous-rich areas. Most recent studies have focused on the microbiota of individuals with SD and healthy controls, suggesting an association of microbial dysbiosis. The variations in the microbiota at lesional and non-lesional sites of SD patients and healthy controls remain unexplored. The present study aimed to characterize the microbiota in SD patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study to analyse microbial composition and diversity of fungi and bacteria on the lesional and non-lesional sites of SD pat

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus along the beef production line: Phenotypic resistance and mecA phylogeny in two ethiopian municipal abattoirs.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a common zoonotic bacteria, responsible for a wide range of infections and is well known for developing resistance to multiple antibiotics. In Ethiopia, information on methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), particularly from a One-Health perspective, is limited. This study aimed to detect S. aureus, identify MRSA strains, and assess their antibiogram patterns in swab samples collected from two municipal abattoirs in Northwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2021 and April 2022. A total of 150 swab samples were collected from

Prevalence and risk factors associated to multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria isolated from dromedary camel milk in Tunisia.

This study focuses on the carriage and antibiotic-susceptibility profiles of Gram-positive bacteria in dromedary camel milk. A total of 103 milk samples were collected from apparently healthy female dromedaries in southern Tunisia. Bacterial growth was observed only in 82 of these samples, yielding 86 Gram-positive bacterial isolates. Staphylococcus was the most frequently isolated genus (54/86, 62.8%) with 13% of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) represented by S. aureus and S. intermedius and 87% of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) (n = 47) identified as S. simulans, S. xylosus,

Engraftment of staphylococcal strains on human skin can competitively displace native staphylococci.

Topical probiotic formulations containing live bacteria are being explored as treatments for skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and acne vulgaris. Certain bacterial strains with antimicrobial and/or anti-inflammatory properties show promise as bacterial therapeutics that could improve these conditions and serve as alternatives to antibiotics, which are increasingly compromised by rising antimicrobial resistance. However, little is known about the engraftment efficacy of such bacterial strains or their impact on the native skin microbiome. In this study, we applied two different coagulase

Prevalence of antibiotic resistance in coagulase-negative staphylococci from spontaneously fermented meat products and safety assessment for new starters.

To provide new meat starter strains lacking antibiotic (AB) resistances, we explored the AB susceptibility in 116 coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) isolates from traditionally fermented sausages (n=40) manufactured with meat from conventional animal breeding, and from meat products (n=76) made from meat of animals raised in natural habitats under low- or no-antibiotic pressure. Less than 50% of these CNS isolates showed phenotypic resistances to at least one antibiotic (AB) by using microdilution assay. Resistances to penicillins and tetracycline were most often observed and could be tra

Interaction and internalization of gram-positive orthopaedic pathogens in MG-63 osteoblast-like cells and antibacterial activity of vancomycin-eluting polymethylmethacrylate.

PURPOSE: Orthopaedic implant-associated infections (OIAIs) are frequently caused by Gram-positive bacteria capable of invading osteoblasts, promoting persistence and treatment failure. Local antibiotic delivery using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with vancomycin may improve extracellular bacterial eradication but may not directly address intracellular bacterial reservoirs. This study evaluated the interaction and internalization of Gram-positive bacteria in MG-63 osteoblast-like cells and the antibacterial activity of vancomycin-eluted PMMA. METHODS: Adhesion, interaction, and internalization
