Gender stereotypes about intellectual ability in Japanese children.

Japan has a large gender gap; thus, this study examined whether Japanese 4- to 7-year-old children exhibit a "brilliance = males" stereotype and whether parental attitudes toward gender roles were related to children's stereotypes. We also explored whether the children exhibited such stereotypes in response to various stimuli. We showed children photos (Study 1) and stick figures (Study 2) of men, women, boys, and girls, asking them to attribute traits (smart or nice) to each. Study 1 revealed overwhelming in-group positivity in girls, whereas the results for boys were rather mixed. In Study 2

Heritability of Locomotor Stereotypies in Chilean Horses.

The Chilean horse is a breed of closed registry. Stall-walking and weaving are locomotor stereotypies that affect this breed, and genetic predisposition has been suggested for both conditions. The objective of the present study was to estimate heritability of stall-walking and weaving in Chilean horses. Owners of 2,098 horses registered in the Chilean horse Stud Book, which were or had been stabled for at least 1 year, were asked to provide for identification data of the animal and presence or absence of stall-walking and/or weaving. The Chilean Horse Stud Book was accessed online, to collect

Repetitive Motor Behaviors in Non-Autistic Toddlers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate repetitive motor behaviors (RMBs) in non-autistic toddlers using direct observational methods. STUDY DESIGN: This cohort study assessed RMBs in a community sample of 679 toddlers at 24 and 36 months of age. Initial analyses examined rates of RMBs in autistic (n = 65) vs nonautistic (n = 614) participants. Subsequent analyses focused on participants without autism, first examining clinical correlates of RMBs in the full non-autistic group and then comparing rates of RMBs in 2 non-autistic subgroups: 104 participants with other developmental concerns (ODC) and 510 partici

Psychostimulants and movement disorders.

Psychostimulants are a diverse group of substances with their main psychomotor effects resembling those of amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, or cathinone. Due to their potential as drugs of abuse, recreational use of most of these substances is illegal since 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. In recent years, new psychoactive substances have emerged mainly as synthetic cathinones with new molecules frequently complementing the list. Psychostimulant related movement disorders are a known entity often seen in emergency rooms around the world. These admissions are becoming more freq

Differentiation of high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder based on neuromotor behaviour.

Autism and Asperger's disorder (AD) are characterised by impairments in social interaction, stereotypic behaviours or restricted interests. Although currently listed as distinct clinical disorders, the validity of their distinction remains controversial. This study examined gait in children with autism and AD. Eleven children with high-functioning autism and eleven children with AD completed a series of walking tasks. Results indicated distinct movement disturbance; these findings are discussed in light of seminal papers in this field by Vilensky et al. (Arch Neurol 38:646-649, 1981) and Halle

The Behavior Problems Inventory: an instrument for the assessment of self-injury, stereotyped behavior, and aggression/destruction in individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) is a 52-item respondent-based behavior rating instrument for self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive/destructive behavior in mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Items are rated on a frequency scale and a severity scale. The BPI-01 was administered by interviewing direct care staff of 432 randomly selected residents from a developmental center between the ages of 14 to 91 years. For 73% of those selected, at least one problem was endorsed on the BPI-01. A total of 43% showed self-injury, 54% stereotyped behavior, and 38% aggressi

Protective effect of rutin, a polyphenolic flavonoid against haloperidol-induced orofacial dyskinesia and associated behavioural, biochemical and neurochemical changes.

The occurrence and irreversibility of tardive dyskinesia (TD), a motor disorder of the orofacial region, resulting from chronic neuroleptic treatment has been considered a major clinical issue in the treatment of schizophrenia. The molecular mechanism underlying the pathophysiology of TD is not completely known. Several animal studies have demonstrated an enhancement of oxidative damage and increased glutamatergic transmission after chronic administration of neuroleptics. The present study investigated the effect of rutin, an antioxidant in haloperidol-induced orofacial dyskinesia by using dif

Is It Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Event, Sleep Related Rhythmical Movement Disorder or Hypermotor Seizure?

Distinguishing non-epileptic events from epileptic seizures remains a clinical challenge, particularly when occurring exclusively during sleep. Sleep-related rhythmical movement disorder (SRRMD) is a benign condition typically seen in early childhood, characterised by stereotyped, rhythmical repetitive movements involving large muscle groups, predominantly during Stage II of non-REM sleep. These movements can closely mimic features of sleep parasomnias, hypermotor seizures or psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), complicating the diagnostic approach. We present a case of an adolescent fem

The management of tics.

A tic is a stereotyped repetitive involuntary movement or sound, frequently preceded by premonitory sensations or urges. Most tic disorders are genetic or idiopathic in nature, possibly due to a developmental failure of inhibitory function within frontal-subcortical circuits modulating volitional movements. Currently available oral medications can reduce the severity of tics, but rarely eliminate them. Botulinum toxin injections can be effective if there are a few particularly disabling motor tics. Deep brain stimulation has been reported to be an effective treatment for the most severe cases,

A review on techniques for tremor recording and quantification.

Tremor is the most common movement disorder and differs from other disorders by its repetitive, stereotyped movements, with regular frequency and amplitude. The three most frequent pathological forms of it are the essential tremor (ET), the Parkinson's disease (PD) tremor, and the enhanced physiological tremor. The ET and PD tremor affect the older population mostly. Although there are cases of tremor reported since ancient times, there is currently no consensus about its causes or about its main differential characteristics. In this article, we present a review of the methods more frequently

The Spectrum of Repetitive Behaviors Associated With Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive behaviors refer to a broad class of responses ranging from stereotypic body movements to impulsive/compulsive behaviors. They may be associated with neurological disorders. METHODS: This is a case series of six subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients who presented with a wide spectrum of repetitive motor behaviors and vocalizations. RESULTS: Repetitive motor behaviors involved the upper limbs in all patients and lower limbs in 3 patients. The repetitive movements in the upper limbs were clapping, finger-clicking, hand rubbing, flailing, and dystonic posturi

Evolution of Movement Disorders in Patients With CLN2-Batten Disease Treated With Enzyme Replacement Therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2-disease) is an inherited childhood-onset neurodegenerative condition, with classical early features of speech delay, epilepsy, myoclonus, ataxia, and motor regression. This study aimed to better characterize the spectrum of movement disorders in CLN2-disease in a cohort of children receiving enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). METHODS: A cohort of 18 children attending a single center for treatment with cerliponase alfa ERT was systematically assessed using a standardized structured history and a double-scored, video-recorded examination u

[Periodic limb movement disorder].

The periodic limb movements (PLM) are defined as stereotyped, periodic movements of the legs and/or upper limbs during sleep. The patient exhibits dorsifilexion of the ankle and extension of the big toe with occasional flexion of the knee and hip. PLM originally was described as "nocturnal myoclonus" by Symonds in 1953. Recently, the term "nocturnal myoclonus" has been replaced with PLM, because the movements are slower than true myoclonic movement. The appearance of PLM was reported in sleep apnea syndrome, delayed sleep phase syndrome, narcolepsy, spinal cord tumor, diabetes mellitus and ure

Parent-Reported Repetitive Behavior in Toddlers on the Autism Spectrum.

Toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were assessed on the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), which we found to have acceptable internal consistency. Stereotypical subscale scores showed a negligible association with cognitive level, but correlated more strongly with adaptive and social indicators. Relative to earlier reported RBS-R scores for older age groups, toddlers' scores trended toward higher stereotyped behavior and lower ritualistic/sameness behavior. Our findings on associations with developmental indicators align with those of researchers who used more resource-intens

Abnormal repetitive behaviours: shared phenomenology and pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behaviour (SIB) is a devastating problem observed in individuals with various neurodevelopmental disorders, including specific genetic syndromes as well as idiopathic intellectual and developmental disability. Although an increased prevalence of SIB has been documented in specific genetic mutations, little is known about the neurobiological basis of SIB. This makes vulnerability assessment and pharmacological treatment incredibly challenging. METHOD: Here we review evidence that SIB and other repetitive, invariant behaviours, such as stereotypy, compulsions and tics

Automated Detection of Repetitive Motor Behaviors as an Outcome Measurement in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Repetitive sensory motor behaviors are a direct target for clinical treatment and a potential treatment endpoint for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. By removing the burden associated with video annotation or direct observation, automated detection of stereotypy would allow for longer term monitoring in ecologic settings. We report automated detection of common stereotypical motor movements using commercially available accelerometers affixed to the body and a generalizable detection algorithm. The method achieved a sensitivity of 80% for body rocking and 93% for han
