Bovine tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis is an important zoonosis. In this study, a simple, rapid method for detecting this organism was developed based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification of the mpt83 gene. The technique will be of value in the clinical and field-based diagnosis of M. bovis and can differentiate it from other bacteria such as Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, β-haemolytic streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The limit of detection was 10 copies/μL and the result

Radiometric detection of facultative gram-positive cocci, particularly streptococci, has been reported to be suboptimal. A recently marketed anaerobic Bactec bottle (7C) with purportedly improved capability to detect facultative gram-positive cocci in blood was compared with the previously available bottle in a study of simulated bacteremia. The Bactec system detected all beta-hemolytic streptococci and enterococci tested. Detection of alpha-hemolytic streptococci was improved in general. However, detection of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus pneumoniae remained subo

Two cases of septicemia with Streptococcus equinus, a group D streptococcus, are reported, and the literature pertaining to infections with this organism is reviewed. Both of our patients presented with obvious signs of infection, had S equinus isolated from multiple blood cultures, and had a good clinical response to penicillin therapy, alone or in combination with streptomycin. In vitro testing of the isolates confirmed susceptibility to penicillin. S equinus should now be recognized as a human pathogen as are the other group D streptococci, S bovis and the enterococci.

Abscesses of the spleen are rare and, if untreated, lead to death. The usual mode of development is by hematogenous spread of infection. Treatment options are splenectomy, percutaneous drainage and in selected cases an antibiotic therapy. We report a case of a splenic abscess due to Streptococcus bovis treated with antibiotics only.

Streptococci other than Streptococcus pneumoniae are a rare cause of bacterial meningitis in adults. We report 29 cases of streptococcal meningitis (1977-1997). The patients comprised 19 men and 10 women, with a mean age +/- standard deviation of 47 +/- 18 years. Nine cases were secondary to neurosurgical procedures, seven to brain abscess, five to cerebrospinal fluid pericranial fistula, and three to endocarditis. Causative microorganisms included the following: viridans group streptococci, 20 cases; anaerobic streptococci, 3; Streptococcus agalactiae, 3; Streptococcus bovis, 2; and Streptoco

Streptococcus gallolyticus, previously known as Streptococcus bovis biotypes I and II/2, is a well-known cause of sepsis and meningitis in humans and birds. The present case report describes an outbreak of fatal septicemia associated with S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus (S. bovis biotype II/2) in 11 turkey flocks in Pennsylvania between 2010 and 2013. Affected poults were 2-3 wk of age. Major clinical observation was sudden increase in mortality among turkey poults without any premonitory clinical signs. Postmortem examination findings revealed acute septicemia with lesions such as fibrino

LY 127935 (6059-S), a new semi-synthetic beta-lactam antibiotic was tested simultaneously with 6 cephalosporins, 3 aminoglycosides, carbenicillin and ticarcillin against 398 clinical isolates of Gram-negative bacilli and Gram-positive cocci. Many of the organisms were selected for study because of known resistance to one or more of the clinically available antibiotics tested. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Serratia and Providencia were susceptible to LY 127935. Some resistant strains of Enterobacter, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter were also resistant to LY 127935, but many of

On a dairy cattle farm, infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis was diagnosed in 29 (24%) calves and heifers aged from 2 weeks to 1 year old. The highest infection rate (18%) occurred in animals aged 3-6 months. The bacteriological examination of swabs from the affected animals yielded several species of bacteria: Moraxella bovis, Neisseria ovis, N. cuniculi, plasma coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., alpha-haemolytic Streptococcus spp., Arcanobacterium pyogenes and Escherichia coli. Moraxella bovis and N. ovis were the most common isolates. Hyperplasia of the lymphatic tissue of the third

Four Gram-positive, catalase-negative, coccoid-shaped isolates were obtained from the caecum and rectum of horses with oligofructose-induced equine laminitis. Phenotypic and phylogenetic studies were performed on these isolates. Initial biochemical profiling assigned two of the isolates to Streptococcus bovis. The other two isolates, however, could not be assigned conclusively on the basis of their biochemical profiles. Gene sequence analysis demonstrated that the four new isolates were related most closely to Streptococcus suis based on the 16S rRNA gene and to Streptococcus orisratti based o

Background. Streptococcus gallolyticus (previously known as Streptococcus bovis type-1) bacteremia has a well-established, almost pathognomonic association with colorectal carcinoma, with the most common hypothesized mechanism being ulceration of polyps leading to hematologic dissemination. There are few reported cases of streptococcus bacteremia from other, seemingly benign sources like cellulitis or colonic adenomas. Hence, there is limited focus on skin and soft tissue infections leading to potentially fatal infective endocarditis. Case Presentation. We present a novel case of streptococcus

Aerococci are only occasionally isolated from urinary tract specimens. A 4-month' survey revealed 29 patients suspected of urinary tract infection (UTI), from whom an Aerococcus-like organism (ALO) was isolated in significant numbers from urinary tract specimens and singly in 11 cases. Approximately 0.8% of all urinary tract specimens examined during the period yielded growth of ALO. The median age of patients was 75 years. Half of the patients were found to have conditions predisposing to UTI. 9 of 11 patients without indwelling catheter, having ALO isolated in pure culture from the urine, sh

Meningitis caused by Streptococcus is uncommon in adults. Otitis media, mastoiditis, sinusitis, or trauma has antedated most cases reported in the past. Data on 10 recent cases suggest changes in the current pathogenesis of streptococcal meningitis in adults and emphasize the importance of accurate streptococcal speciation. Endocarditis was present in five cases; trauma played a role in two others. Brain abscess, corticosteroids, alcoholic cirrhosis, and peritonitis secondary to chronic peritoneal dialysis were etiologic factors in five patients. Otitis media, mastoiditis, and sinusitis were c

Rheumatic manifestations are common and varied in infective endocarditis. We performed a retrospective case analysis on 87 patients with 93 episodes of infective endocarditis admitted to Flinders Medical Centre over an 11 year period (1980-1990). Disabling musculoskeletal symptoms and signs were documented in 22 (25%) of the patients. Thirteen patients developed severe or moderately severe low back pain during their illness, two with radiological evidence of a septic discitis or vertebral osteomyelitis. Two patients developed polyarthralgia/arthritis, four had septic arthritis (all with acute

BACKGROUND: Although many patients with IE complain of joint, muscle, and back pain, infections at these sights are rare. Indeed, in patients with back pain and endocarditis, less than 4% actually demonstrate spondylodiscitis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We recently encountered 4 patients with this complication, one each caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus bovis, Streptococcus mitis, and Enterococcus faecalis, and wondered whether the nature of the infecting organism determined the development of spondylodiscitis and epidural abscess. In a literature review, 36 patients with endocarditis and

Although the link between Streptococcus bovis bacteraemia and colon cancer is well established, bacteraemia from other viridans group streptococci that commonly colonise colonic mucosa may also herald occult malignancy. We present a case of Streptococcus sanguinis bacteraemia in an elderly man with new anaemia that led to the detection and removal of a high-grade colon neoplasm. This case contributes to a growing body of literature contending that unexplained streptococcal bacteraemia merits a thorough workup that may include relatively invasive procedures such as endoscopy. Diagnostic colonos

There is a well-known association between colon carcinoma and bacteraemia with Streptococcus bovis biotype I. There are also associations, less well known, with other streptococci of the viridans group. In three patients, a man of 44, a woman of 53 and one of 52 years old, colorectal carcinomas were diagnosed in association with bacteraemia with S. salivarius, S. milleri, and S. salivarius respectively.

We report a case of Streptococcus mitis endocarditis associated with early gastric carcinoma. A 71-year-old man who had been diagnosed with aortic regurgitation (AR) two years previously was referred for valve surgery and evaluation of elevated inflammatory markers. Four months previously, atrophic gastritis, early gastric adenocarcinoma, and colon polyp had been identified in the patient during endoscopy. However, Helicobacter pylori testing was negative. On admission, he had no dental diseases or recent oral procedures. Echocardiography demonstrated severe AR and mobile vegetation on the aor

Faeces from non-ruminating calves were found to contain several species of enterococci: Enterococcus avium, Ent. cecorum, Ent. durans, Ent. faecalis, Ent. faecium and Ent. hirae. Enterococcus faecalis was the most frequent. Few of these animals carried streptococci. Streptococcus bovis largely predominated in ruminating calves, young cattle and dairy cows. Other streptococci as well as enterococci were infrequent in dairy cows, but a variety of other streptococci and enterococci were found in the faeces of young ruminating animals.

Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) is a group of non-enterococcal group D Streptococci that colonizes both humans and animals. Due to gastrointestinal disease, they can switch in opportunistic pathogens passing through intestinal mucosal barrier and may cause bacteremia and distant organs damage. Despite infective endocarditis (IE), extra-cardiac manifestations of organs damage include osteoarticular infections, meningitis, and biliary infections among others; moreover, the association with colonic pathological lesions has been largely described. Ninety-three episodes of culture-positive endocarditis occurred in 88 patients in the years 1970 to 1979. Streptococci caused two-thirds of the cases, with Streptococcus mitior and Streptococcus sanguis most common. Among the Group D streptococci, Streptococcus bovis was much more common than Streptococcus faecalis. Staphylococci accounted for a quarter of the episodes. Streptococcal endocarditis was commonest in the elderly, whereas staphylococcal endocarditis occurred at all ages. Degenerative heart disease was the underlying cardiac factor in nearly half the streptococcal cases, but staphyl
