Prevalence, Genetic Diversity, and Pathogenicity of Avian Haemosporidian Parasite Co-infection in Free-Living Long-Eared Owls (Asio otus).

In wild birds, a frequent and significant aspect of co-evolution is simultaneous infections of a single avian host with multiple parasites from different haemosporidian genera, or from the same genus. To date, the majority of haemosporidian phylogenetic studies have been focused on Passerines. Other bird groups, such as nocturnal species, particularly owls, even though they play an important role in ecosystems, have been largely neglected. In our study, the use of a combination of different methodologies, including Illumina sequencing and a nested PCR protocol along with blood smear examinatio

Social huddling and physiological thermoregulation are related to melanism in the nocturnal barn owl.

Endothermic animals vary in their physiological ability to maintain a constant body temperature. Since melanin-based coloration is related to thermoregulation and energy homeostasis, we predict that dark and pale melanic individuals adopt different behaviours to regulate their body temperature. Young animals are particularly sensitive to a decrease in ambient temperature because their physiological system is not yet mature and growth may be traded-off against thermoregulation. To reduce energy loss, offspring huddle during periods of cold weather. We investigated in nestling barn owls (Tyto al

How barn owls (Tyto alba) visually follow moving voles (Microtus socialis) before attacking them.

The present study focused on the movements that owls perform before they swoop down on their prey. The working hypothesis was that owl head movements reflect the capacity to efficiently follow visually and auditory a moving prey. To test this hypothesis, five tame barn owls (Tyto alba) were each exposed 10 times to a live vole in a laboratory setting that enabled us to simultaneously record the behavior of both owl and vole. Bi-dimensional analysis of the horizontal and vertical projections of movements revealed that owl head movements increased in amplitude parallel to the vole's direction of

Evaluation of the Thermal Antinociceptive Effects of a Sustained-Release Buprenorphine Formulation After Intramuscular Administration to American kestrels ( Falco sparverius).

Previous studies have validated the clinical use of opioids with μ-receptor affinities for pain management in raptors. Buprenorphine has a longer duration of action and minimal adverse effects when compared with other opioids in American kestrels ( Falco sparverius). To evaluate the thermal antinociceptive effects, sedative effects, and duration of action of sustained-release buprenorphine given intramusculary in American kestrels, 12 adult kestrels (8 females and 4 males) were used in a randomized masked complete-crossover experimental design. Comparison of Intramuscular and Intranasal Midazolam in Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus).

There are few studies evaluating safe and effective sedatives for wild birds. Most sedatives are injectable drugs that are commonly administered intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SC); however, needle injuries occasionally occur from the bird struggling during the injection. Previous research in parrots and other bird species explored the effects of intranasal (IN) midazolam compared with IM administration; however, this delivery method has not been well studied in wild birds, such as raptors. To our knowledge, there is only 1 study that has been published evaluating midazolam IN in a rap

Distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in feather and muscle of the birds of prey from Beijing, China.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the feather and muscle of common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), eagle owls (Bubo bubo) and little owls (Athene noctua) collected from Beijing, China were investigated. The concentrations of ∑23PBDEs in the muscle and feather of all the birds of prey ranged from 46 to 7.77 × 104 ng/g lipid weight (lw; median 241 ng/g lw) and 1.50-191 ng/g dry weight (dw; median 21.1 ng/g dw), respectively. Higher brominated congeners, e.g., BDE-209, -153, -207 and -196 were the dominant congeners in both feather and muscle. However, the concentrations of lower brominated

Distribution within the barn owl's inferior colliculus of neurons projecting to the optic tectum and thalamus.

Behavioral studies in barn owls indicate that both the optic tectum (OT) and the auditory arcopallium (AAr) mediate sound localization through the presence of neurons that respond only when sound comes from a circumscribed direction in space. The early stages of the computations leading to these so-called space-specific neurons are shared in a common brainstem pathway, which then splits at the level of the inferior colliculus (IC) such that the last computational stage is thought to be duplicated. The study presented here addresses whether the space-specific neurons in OT and AAr are indeed pa

Tonotopic and somatotopic representation in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl, Tyto alba.

We have investigated the somatosensory and auditory representations in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl. In pigeons and finches, the nucleus basalis contains a representation of the beak and an auditory area. In the barn owl, the nucleus basalis also contains a complete somatotopic map of the head and body (as in the budgerigar), with a tonotopically organized auditory area in close proximity to the representation of the facial ruff and the preaural area. Recordings within and around the nucleus basalis revealed predominantly (about 80%) contralateral responses to somatic stimulation. The s

Haemaphysalis wellingtoni (Acari: Ixodidae) from the spotted wood owl (Strix seloputo) (Aves: Strigiiformes): a new tick-host record in Peninsular Malaysia.

Multiple engorged tick nymphs (n= 6) were collected from an injured spotted wood owl (Strix seloputo) in Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. Morphological identification of the nymphs revealed that the ticks were Haemaphysalis wellingtoni, based on several distinctive features: (1) internal edge of palpal article III extending far beyond the internal edge of palpal article II; and (2) four feathery and closespaced infrainternal setae. Subsequent molecular analysis of a randomly selected nymph targeting the mitochondrial 16S gene corroborated with the species identity of the tick. To date, this is f

Haemoproteus syrnii and other haemosporidians infecting owls from North America.

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidians (Haemosporida, Apicomplexa), which include malaria parasites, are found in nearly all terrestrial ecosystems. Avian haemosporidians have been extensively studied; however, there is limited information on parasites in owls (order Strigiformes). Here, haemosporidians infecting North American owls were characterized using an integrative methodology. METHODS: Taking advantage of injured/dead owls from rehabilitation centres in the central and northeastern USA, 53 individuals of Bubo virginianus, Strix varia, Megascops asio, Bubo scandiacus, Aegolius acadicus, and Tyto

The first clinical cases of Haemoproteus infection in a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) and a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) at a zoo in the Republic of Korea.

This study reports two clinical cases of avian haemosporidian infection caused by a Haemoproteus sp., involving a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) and a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), at a zoo. The snowy owl died after presenting with anorexia, depression and lethargy. A blood smear with Wright's staining confirmed Haemoproteus infection. Necropsy of the snowy owl revealed hypertrophy of the internal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, kidney and adrenal glands. The goshawk showed anorexia, depression and a lowered head position, and was diagnosed with a Haemoproteus infection based on a blood

Small mammal diversity of Mt. Kenya based on carnivore fecal and surface bone remains.

Ecological dynamics and faunal diversity documentation is normally conducted by direct observation and trapping of live animals. However, surveys of carnivore scat prey and surface bone remains, which are relatively inexpensive, can provide complementary data that expand carnivore diet breadth and may improve accuracy regarding inferences of the ecological dynamics of a given ecosystem. We used this inexpensive method to document species diversity variation with elevation on the leeward (Sirimon) and windward (Chogoria) areas of Mt. Kenya. Bone and fecal specimens were opportunistically collec

Changes in Detected Anticoagulant Rodenticide Exposure in Barn Owls ( Tyto alba) in Kentucky, USA, in 2012-16.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are widely used across North America to control rodent infestations but may cause direct mortality or nonlethal effects when secondarily consumed by raptors. Barn Owls ( Tyto alba) are at high risk for secondary consumption because they specialize in rodent prey and often live in human-made structures. We investigated the exposure of Barn Owls in Kentucky, US, to ARs and to dicoumarol, an anticoagulant compound naturally found in certain moldy forages. We tested the liver tissue of 48 Barn Owl carcasses collected during 2012-16. We confirmed exposure to one or
