Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty. As a result of SS' own experiences as a medical student with dyslexia, we have been researching and teaching on this topic for the past two years. Here, we present twelve tips for teaching medical students with dyslexia. These are gathered from our personal experiences and research, discussions with other educators, and wider literature on the topic. BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that the sexual beliefs and mores of students in medical professions may influence their capacity to care for patients' sexuality and contraception issues. Students also represent a large sample of reproductive-age individuals. In this study, we examined contraceptive usage patterns in North American medical students.
STUDY DESIGN: Students using online medical student social and information networks enrolled in allopathic and osteopathic medical schools in North America between February and July of 2008 were invited to participate via email and published

The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes of medical students at a single university toward genetic testing in minors, defining attitudes as willingness to offer testing, and reasons for offering or not offering testing. A survey was distributed to all University of Arizona medical students (n = 428) during the 2003-2004 academic year. The survey consisted of three clinical vignettes concerning genetic testing for Huntington's disease (HD), BRCA1 breast cancer predisposition mutation, and cystic fibrosis (CF) carrier status. For each vignette, students responded to whether they would

BCG vaccination is no longer routinely offered to all medical students in Victoria. Practices in Australia's 15 medical schools vary widely with respect to BCG vaccination and surveillance for tuberculosis (TB) infection during the medical course. Health care workers can be exposed to TB in Australian hospitals, but the risk is much higher if they undertake work in countries with a high prevalence of TB, such as during student electives. BCG vaccination is safe, cheap and protects 50% or more of recipients from active TB, including multidrug-resistant TB. Protection is long-lasting, requires o

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of Norwegian medical students have some private education behind them. The question raised here is whether the educational performance of these students is lower than that of other students.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis is based on data from the National Educational Database, which includes information on the total population. The dependent variable is grades obtained early in medical training. The impact of private education is estimated by linear regression models. The analysis controls for time between completing secondary school and entering medical sc

BACKGROUND: Success in undergraduate medical courses in the UK can be predicted by school exit examination (A level) grades. There are no documented predictors of success in UK graduate entry medicine (GEM) courses. This study looks at the examination performance of GEM students to identify factors which may predict success; of particular interest was A level score.
METHODS: Data was collected for students graduating in 2004, 2005 and 2006, including demographic details (age and gender), details of previous academic achievement (A level total score and prior degree) and examination results at
