Self-regulation and the management of stuttering.

Self-regulation refers to a process by which individuals learn to direct and control their own behavior, thoughts, and feelings to manage or eliminate their stuttering. As a concept, it has been a vital and enduring component of most approaches to managing persistent and chronic stuttering. The theoretical basis for self-regulation is briefly reviewed and the main principles of self-regulation--goal setting, cue management, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation--are described and illustrated with clinical examples. Factors related to self-regulatory failure are also discussed.

Physician referral patterns for stutterers.

Many children who stutter initially seek guidance from their pediatricians. Pediatricians often do not refer stutterers for speech therapy. We present a brief analysis of pediatricians' views regarding stuttering, as well as their exposure to patients who stutter. We present a practical approach to children who stutter.

What the literature tells us about listeners' reactions to stuttering: implications for the clinical management of stuttering.

It is known that listeners harbor negative stereotypes toward people who stutter but there are a host of other findings in the literature that provide a broader perspective about how listeners react to stuttering. The focus of this article is a discussion of four areas of research related to listener reactions to stuttering: (1) how stuttering impacts listeners' reactions to mild, moderate, and severe stuttering; (2) how stuttering interferes with listener recall and comprehension of story information; (3) how children react to stuttering; and (4) how listeners react to strategies plus use in

A life-time of stuttering: how emotional reactions to stuttering impact activities and participation in older people.

PURPOSE: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework has a pragmatic focus on how impairment impacts the individual's activities and participation. Stuttering is known to impact communication in younger adults but this has not been established in older people who stutter. In this study, emotional reactions to stuttering were investigated in a group 55 years and older who self-reported stuttering since childhood. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional descriptive design. Twelve participants who self-reported that they still stuttered and in whom stutterin

Stuttering and neurodiversity: A question of ableism or anti-ableism? One central premise: The person who stutters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this position statement is to lay the foundation for an open-minded discourse by embracing neurodiversity in assessment and treatment of the person who stutters and to bring attention to the central premise: the person who stutters. METHOD: A reflection on recent publications and conference presentations that discuss an unnuanced and narrow-minded ableist versus anti-ableist approach to the assessment and treatment of people who stutter. Many of those are not data-bound and lead to confusion and a perception of professional failure, certainly among junior speech-langua

Internet searches conducted by people who stutter: association with speech-language therapy and severity of stuttering.

Stuttering is a fluency disorder that is multidimensional because it involves more than speech difficulties. People who stutter can use the Internet to find out more about their condition and connect with other people in the same position, yet in Croatia, there are not nearly as many online sources on stuttering or as many possibilities to connect with other people who stutter as in the USA or Great Britain. If one does not speak English well, a lot of information about stuttering will simply be denied to them, especially to those who have never received speech therapy. The present study, the

Social anxiety and life impact in adults who clutter and stutter: a comparative study with pure stuttering.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is frequently reported to coexist with stuttering; however, its occurrence in the context of cluttering remains largely unexplored. This study determined whether SAD co-occurs in individuals with disfluency after differentiating those with cluttering with stuttering from those with stuttering alone. Forty participants aged ≥18 years with a chief complaint of stuttering-like disfluencies (SDF) were included. Based on established criteria, participants were categorized into two groups: cluttering with stuttering (n = 14) and stuttering alone (n = 26). All participan

Effectiveness of Stuttering Modification Treatment in School-Age Children Who Stutter: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effectiveness of the stuttering modification intervention Kinder Dürfen Stottern (KIDS) in school-age children who stutter. METHOD: Seventy-three children who stutter were included in this multicenter, two-group parallel, randomized, wait-list controlled trial with a follow-up of 12 months. Children aged 7-11 years were recruited from 34 centers for speech therapy and randomized to either the immediate-treatment group or the 3 months delayed-treatment group. KIDS was provided by 26 clinicians who followed a treatment manual. Although the primary outcome me

Exploratory randomized clinical study of pagoclone in persistent developmental stuttering: the EXamining Pagoclone for peRsistent dEvelopmental Stuttering Study.

INTRODUCTION: Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by repetitions, prolongation, and blocks of sounds, syllables, or words. No pharmacological treatments are approved for use in stuttering, and the most common form of treatment is speech therapy. This study was designed to assess the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of pagoclone during 8 weeks of double-blind treatment followed by a 1-year open-label extension in patients who stutter. METHODS: An 8-week, multicenter, parallel-group, 2-arm, randomized (ratio 2:1 pagoclone-placebo), double-blind study

Self-disclosure of stuttering: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Self-disclosure of stuttering occurs when people who stutter (PWS) actively acknowledge to others that they stutter. Although the benefits of self-disclosure have been examined for three decades, several factors have been identified that may mediate its impact. The purpose of this study was to (a) conduct a systematic review of the literature on self-disclosure of stuttering, and (b) summarize the effects of self-disclosure to examine potential factors influencing its impact. METHOD: A systematic review of studies examining self-disclosure of stuttering was conducted. Studies publish

Developmental stuttering with common and complex phenotypes.

AIM: To describe the phenotypic spectrum associated with stuttering. METHOD: Individuals with current or resolved developmental stuttering self-referred. Surveys assessed stuttering characteristics (onset, negative impact, family history) and health (early development, other conditions). Speech and non-verbal intelligence were assessed using conversation and the Wechsler standardized scales. Sample sizes varied across assessments (n = 266-327). Latent class analysis identified unobserved groups based on assessment data. RESULTS: A total of 327 participants (231 male, 71%) with a median age o

Stuttering Priapism in a Dog-First Report.

A 5-year-old recently castrated male Doberman dog presented for prolonged erection of one week's duration with associated pain and dysuria. This was the fourth episode within a year. Each episode was associated with an unusual event, which was stressful for the dog. Castration performed two months prior to the final episode did not prevent recurrence. Due to tissue necrosis, penile amputation and urethrostomy had to be performed. The dog recovered fully. Prolonged erection that persists beyond or that is unrelated to sexual stimulation is called "priapism". This term refers to the Greek god Pr

Stuttering after Intravenous Anesthesia: A Case Report.

Stuttering is a form of speech disorder characterized by involuntary prolongation and repetition of sound, words, syllables or phrases as well as involuntary silent pauses or blocks. We report a case of a healthy twenty-six-year-old male patient without significant past history, who underwent short intravenous anesthesia for incision and drainage for perianal abscess. Postoperatively, the patient presented with prominent stuttering after six hours of surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of stuttering following short intravenous anesthesia without any airway manipulation.

Altered functional connectivity in persistent developmental stuttering.

Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) is a speech disorder that impairs communication skills. Despite extensive research, the core causes of PDS are elusive. Converging evidence from task-induced neuroimaging methods has demonstrated the contributions of the basal ganglia and the cerebellum to PDS, but such task-state neuroimaging findings are often confounded by behavioral performance differences between subjects who stutter and normal controls. Here, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated functional connectivity within cerebellar-cortical and basal gan

Stuttering priapism: insights into pathogenesis and management.

Priapism is defined as a persistent, painful erection that continues beyond, or is unrelated to, sexual stimulation. It may be categorized as either ischemic (low/absent flow) or nonischemic (high flow). Stuttering priapism is a variant of the ischemic type that is characterized by repetitive, transient, painful, self-limiting episodes of priapism. It is associated with various hematological disorders, including sickle cell disease and pharmacological treatments. The consequences of ineffective treatment of priapism are erectile dysfunction and impaired quality of life due to chronic pain and
