Clinical and Prognostic Factors of Submandibular Gland Malignancies: A SEER-Based Analysis : Analysis of Submandibular Gland Tumors.

OBJECTIVE: While neoplasms of the submandibular gland (SMG) are rare, there is a nearly 50% risk of malignancy and its neoplasms are associated with poorer prognoses. Due to the rarity of these tumors, clinical and prognostic information relating to these tumors is limited; we aimed to elucidate these factors using an analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: A retrospective population-based analysis was performed with data regarding primary SMG malignancy from 2000 to 2019 as extracted from the SEER database. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests

Gland-preserving surgery for pleomorphic adenoma in the submandibular gland.

BACKGROUND: Removal of tumours arising in the submandibular gland (SMG) usually involves excision of the entire gland. This prospective study evaluated the efficacy of gland-preserving surgery in patients with benign SMG tumours. METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients with pleomorphic adenomas in the SMG underwent local excision of tumours with limited tumour-free margins and preservation of the remnant glandular tissues. All patients had salivary scintigraphy before and 6 months after surgery, with ultrasonography 2 years after operation. Complications, operating time, salivary function and ra

Unilateral submandibular gland aplasia associated with ipsilateral sublingual gland hypertrophy.

Congenital absence of the major salivary glands is an infrequent disorder. Clinically, patients may be asymptomatic or may present with dryness of the mouth, difficulty in chewing and swallowing, and dental caries. The absence of the submandibular gland may be associated with hypertrophy of the contralateral submandibular gland. We report a case of ipsilateral sublingual hypertrophy associated with unilateral submandibular aplasia.

[Lateral exposure of the submandibular gland with gland pressing downward].

The dry-powder inhaler (DPI) Turbuhaler((R)) has been on the market for nearly two decades. Products containing terbutaline, formoterol, budesonide, and the combination budesonide/formoterol are widely used by patients with asthma and COPD. Most patients and physicians find Turbuhaler((R)) easy to use, and local side effects are rare. This is thought to arise from the lack of additives or only small amounts in the formulation, in addition to minimal deposition of the drug in the oropharynx and on the vocal cords during inspiration. The function of Turbuhaler((R)) has frequently been questioned.

[Peptidergic innervation of human salivary glands (parotid gland and submandibular gland)].

Immunocytochemistry and a radioimmunoassay were used to investigate the existence and distributions of various regulatory peptide immunoreactivities (ir) in human submandibular and parotid glands. Numerous nerve fibers containing vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and peptide histidine methionine (PHM), or neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY) and C-flanking peptide of NPY (CPON)-ir were found in close proximity to acini, ducts and blood vessels. Only a few calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and substance P (SP)-ir nerve fibers could be demonstrated and were mainly localized around blood vesse

Decellularization of Rat Submandibular Gland for Salivary Gland Tissue-Engineering Applications.

OBJECTIVES: This study describes a robust and versatile method for decellularization of rat submandibular glands (SMGs). METHODS: Briefly, rat SMGs were harvested and subjected to perfusion cycles using an anionic detergent. Native and decellularized SMG tissues were subjected to histological analysis using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain and immunohistochemical staining using Hoescht reagent. Further, complementary DNA was synthesized using the native and decellularized SMG tissues and subjected to quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using rat-specific gen

The Extended SMAS Controls Submandibular Gland Ptosis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional facelift surgery may fail to adequately address submandibular gland ptosis (SMGP), prompting recommendations for partial gland resection. Alternatively, the extended SMAS technique involves a more extensive SMAS-platysma dissection, providing lower facial and neck rejuvenation while preserving the submandibular glands. This study aims to quantify the effect of the extended SMAS technique on SMGP. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 53 patients who underwent extended SMAS facelift surgery over a 10-year period in the senior author's practice. Photographic

Idiopathic dilatation of the submandibular gland duct.

Lithiasis and stenosis may cause salivary duct dilatation due to the increased pressure in the duct upstream of the obstruction. Idiopathic dilatations, also called megaducts, with no associated increase in pressure, have only been described in the parotid gland. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of submandibular duct dilatation unrelated to lithiasis, stenosis, or an imperforate duct, to report the existence of submandibular megaducts. This retrospective single-centre study included patients treated at La Conception University Hospital, Marseille, France, between 2007

Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma of Submandibular gland.

INTRODUCTION: Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma of salivary glands (MASC) is a low-grade carcinoma of salivary glands of the head-neck region. It bears histological resemblance to Secretory Carcinoma of the breast and Acinic Cell Carcinoma (ACC) of the parotid gland. Its clinical behaviour and aggressiveness vary amongst individuals and experience in MASC of the submandibular gland are limited. CASE REPORT: We report a 16-year-old female with binary neck swelling in the submandibular region. The hard swelling in the submandibular region was a MASC and the soft cystic mass was a synchronous

Unilateral Submandibular Gland Aplasia Mimicking Nodal Metastasis.

Aplasia of salivary glands is rare and usually involves several major salivary glands. Isolated unilateral submandibular gland aplasia or aplasia accompanied by hypertrophy of contralateral submandibular gland or sublingual glands is a rare entity. The majority of cases are incidentally detected findings in asymptomatic patients; however, imaging findings may mimic mass-like lesions, posing diagnostic challenges in cancer patients. We presented 2 cases, a case with melanoma and an asymptomatic case, who had asymmetric lesion at left submandibular space, demonstrated to represent left submandib

Intraglandular Ordinary Lipoma of the Submandibular Gland.

Lipomas are the most common soft tissue lesions occurring in the salivary glands but have a very low incidence. Lipomas commonly occur in the parotid gland, and lipomas in the submandibular gland (SMG) are rare. Until recently, ordinary lipomas of the parotid gland and some variants of lipomas of the SMG have been reported. However, few reports of ordinary lipomas occurring within the SMG exist in the literature. We report an extremely rare case of ordinary lipoma within the right SMG of a 65-year-old man. The tumor measured a 2.0 × 1.8 × 2.7 cm, was a well-capsulated homogenous yellow mass, w

Submandibular Gland Transfer: A Potential Imaging Pitfall.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Seikaly and Jha submandibular gland transfer surgery is performed to facilitate gland shielding during radiation therapy for head and neck tumors to circumvent radiation-induced xerostomia. It results in an asymmetric postsurgical appearance of the submandibular and submental spaces. Our purpose was to characterize the morphologic and enhancement characteristics of the transferred submandibular gland and identify potential pitfalls in postoperative radiologic interpretation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study identified patients with head and neck canc

Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Submandibular Gland.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of salivary glands. Most PAs occur in the parotid (80%), followed by the submandibular gland (10%) and minor salivary and sublingual glands (10%). Submandibular gland PAs usually manifest in the submandibular area as a painless hard mass. Although several recurrent parotid gland PA cases have been reported in the literature, recurrent submandibular gland PA is quite rare. Complete surgical removal of tumor of the submandibular gland and keeping the capsule intact are important to prevent recurrence. Here we present a rare case of submand

Primary synovial sarcoma involving the submandibular gland.

Synovial sarcoma represents 5.6%-10% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Adolescents and young adults are most frequently affected, mainly in the deep soft tissue of the extremities. Only 10% of synovial sarcomas affect the head and neck region; most of these are biphasic. We describe a case of an 18-year-old man who complained of a mass in the right submandibular region that had been present for approximately 12 months. On surgical removal, microscopic analysis showed a tumor formed by sheets of malignant spindle cells involving the submandibular gland. Immunohistochemistry displayed positivity for

[Sclerosing polycystic adenosis of the submandibular gland].

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare, newly-reported lesion of the salivary glands. Most cases occurred within mayor salivary glands and were frequently confused with other salivary gland carcinomas such as acinar cell carcinoma. We report a case of SPA within the submandibular gland in a 63-year-old woman.
