Acinic cell carcinoma of buccal mucosa: An unusual presentation.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare epithelial malignant neoplasm of salivary glands affecting predominantly the female population. Unusual occurrences of this neoplasm are reported in hard palate, maxillary sinuses, lip, etc. [1] We report one such case where a submandibular swelling that is provisionally diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma due to its clinical and radiological findings, turned out to be ACC on histopathological evaluation.

Surgical management of submandibulary gland diseases: ten years of experience.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical management of submandibular gland diseases has always been a challenge because it carries a considerable risk of nerve injury. The aim of the study was to evaluate the history, diagnostic procedure, extent and success of the surgical treatment as well as possible complications in patients with submandibulary gland disorder. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis of 86 patients (42 males, 44 females) with submandibular gland disorder treated between 1999 and 2008 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, FD Roosevelt Faculty Hospital in Banska Bystrica, Slovak

Rare FUS::FEV-Rearranged Adamantinoma-Like Ewing Sarcoma Arising in the Submandibular Gland.

BACKGROUND: Adamantimoma-Like Ewing Sarcoma (ALES) is a rare variant of Ewing sarcoma that poses significant diagnostic challenges in the head and neck due to morphologic overlap with basaloid carcinomas and neuroendocrine neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a middle-aged man with a left submandibular gland mass showing classic histologic features of ALES, including basaloid nests with peripheral palisading, rosette formation, and high mitotic activity. RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry showed co-expression of p63/p40, CD99, and cytokeratins, with patchy synaptophysin positivity an

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the submandibular gland with a high uptake of 18F-FDG: a case report and image diagnosis.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm typically found in the parotid gland. This report describes a case of EMC that arose from the submandibular gland, and gives special emphasis to the preoperative diagnostic value of positron emission tomography (PET) in combination with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although a preoperative diagnostically specific image of EMC could not be established, the malignant nature of this tumor was detected by these combined examinations.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palate: A Detailed Case Report and Surgical Outcome.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for a significant proportion of both major and minor salivary gland tumors. While it most frequently arises in the parotid or submandibular glands, it can occasionally present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip when originating from the minor salivary glands. A palatal pleomorphic adenoma typically presents as a painless, gradually enlarging mass on the posterior lateral aspect of the palate. This article discusses a case of a palatal pleomorphic adenoma, which was successfully managed with surgical excision.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of submandibular gland lesions.

The usefulness of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis and treatment of submandibular gland lesions is not well known. The 210 FNACs taken from submandibular gland lesions at Turku University Central Hospital between 1984 and 1991 were reviewed. Of these FNACs, 78 samples from primary lesions were confirmed histologically. Within this subset 10 FNACs were taken from benign neoplasms, all of which were correctly classified (sensitivity 100 per cent; specificity 88 per cent). Only four of the 14 FNACs from malignant lesions were cytologically considered malignant (sensitivity

Benign neurilemmoma (schwannoma) masquerading as a pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular salivary gland.

A case of solitary benign neurilemmoma (schwannoma) arising in the submandibular region is presented. The tumor was mistaken clinically for an enlarged submandibular salivary gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology made an erroneous diagnosis of a pleomorphic adenoma, predominantly stromal in composition. Histology of the resection specimen resulted in the correct diagnosis of a benign schwannoma. Review of the needle aspirate demonstrated cytologic features that should enable both the correct diagnosis of this neoplasm and its distinction from pleomorphic adenoma, which it mimicked in this loc

Gastric adenocarcinoma with tonsil and submaxillary gland metastases: case report.

Local invasion, hematogenous and lymphatic metastases are the major modes of spreading gastric cancer. The most common sites of metastases in patients with gastric cancer are liver, peritoneum, omentum, lungs and mesentery. Of the two pathological types of gastric cancer, intestinal-type gastric cancer showed preferential metastasis to the liver, whereas the diffuse-type showed a preference for peritoneal involvement and lymph node metastasis. However, metastases of gastric cancer to the head and neck regions are not common. The hematogenous route appears to account for a great majority of met

Familial occurrence of acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland.

We report the familial occurrence of acinic cell carcinoma involving the parotid gland, the first such report of which we are aware. The familial occurrence of any salivary gland neoplasm is rare. Several reports are present in the literature, including pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin tumor, carcinoma of the submandibular gland, and malignant lymphoepithelial lesion. We report the case of a 35-year-old man who underwent excision of a left parotid gland acinic cell carcinoma. Eight years later, his daughter presented at the age of 16 years with a nontender parotid gland mass that was excised and f

Apocrine carcinoma in the parotid gland and in the submandibular region.

The objectives of this paper are to report a case of apocrine carcinoma and the discussion of aspects related to its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Carcinomas with apocrine differentiation not related to extramammary Paget's disease, ductal breast carcinoma, Moll's glands adenocarcinoma and ceruminous glands carcinoma are very uncommon tumors. We report a case of a 51-year-old black woman who developed apocrine carcinoma lesions in the head and neck region. Two lesions involved her left parotid gland (first tumor and local recurrence), and other involved her submandibular skin. The micro

Ancient Schwannoma of the Submandibular Gland in a Patient With Acromegaly: A Case Report.

Ancient schwannoma is a rare degenerative variant of schwannoma. Its occurrence in the submandibular gland is exceptionally uncommon, and, to the best of our knowledge, its coexistence with acromegaly has not been previously documented. A 22-year-old male patient with a history of acromegaly presented with a long-standing, painless swelling in the left submandibular region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined, heterogeneous T2-hyperintense lesion with cystic and calcific components within the left submandibular gland. The patient underwent complete surgical excision of the

Adenoid cystic carcinoma with cystic change of the parotid gland posing a diagnostic challenge: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Salivary gland neoplasms, comprising 2-6.5% of head and neck tumors, primarily arise in the parotid and submandibular glands. Salivary gland cystic lesions can be either neoplastic or non-neoplastic. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This is a 50-year-old male with a cystic adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the parotid gland, presenting with a right infraauricular swelling that had progressively enlarged over three years. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) indicated a benign cystic neoplasm. Histological examination, however, confirmed ACC with cystic changes. CLINICAL D

Salivary gland tumours in Iceland 1986-2015: a nationwide epidemiological analysis over a 30-year time period.

Salivary gland tumours (SGT) are a vast and heterogenous group of neoplasms. There is a relative lack of comprehensive nationwide epidemiological studies on the subject. The aim of this nationwide analysis was to gain insight into epidemiological traits, such as site, incidence and histological subtypes of SGT in general. Patients diagnosed with a primary SGT between 1986 and 2015 were identified from The Icelandic Cancer Registry and registries from all pathology departments in Iceland. Information on age, sex, tumour location and histology was retrieved from pathology reports. A total of 687

Myoepithelial carcinoma of the submandibular gland: report of a case with multiple cutaneous metastases.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare and aggressive neoplasm of the salivary glands. One-third of the patients may develop regional distant metastases, and lungs and kidneys have been regarded as the most usual sites for implantation. There is, however, little information on the metastatic behavior of this malignancy. We report the first case of patient with multiple cutaneous metastases from a myoepithelial carcinoma of the submandibular gland, which depicted a very aggressive clinical course.

Seek the Spindle Tumor in Submandibular Space.

INTRODUCTION: Submandibular region is surgically significant in the head and neck field and a mass in this region may have multiple differential diagnoses. CASE REPORT: An elderly man came with a single 4×2.5 cm swelling in the neck on the right side, just below the lower jaw, since one month. Ultrasound showed an irregular heterogeneous hypoechoic lesion in the right submandibular space measuring 37×23 mm with mild internal vascularity. The submandibular gland appeared separate but compressed. Fine needle aspiration was suggestive of spindle cell neoplasm. The swelling was excised under gene

An Analysis of 50 Cases of Salivary Gland Neoplasms: A Single-Institution Experience.

Aim Salivary gland neoplasms represent a rare subset of head and neck neoplasms. Due to their varied histological and biological behaviours, they pose a challenge for both surgeons and histopathologists. The study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with salivary gland neoplasms at our centre, assess their anatomical distribution and histopathological patterns, and evaluate the concordance of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) with histopathology. The study also documented surgical management approaches, short-term postoperative outcomes, including pr

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland with symptomatic ovarian metastases.

We report the clinical and pathologic features of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland that metastasized to the ovaries 10 years after initial presentation. A 30-year-old woman underwent excision of a right submandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma followed by regional external beam radiation therapy. Three years later, she underwent extended hepatic resection and localized radiotherapy to the hepatic region for metastatic disease. The patient was without evidence of disease for 7 years when she developed pelvic pain and a pelvic mass was found. A solid and cystic 10-cm left ova

Malignant melanoma of unknown primary site simulating a salivary gland neoplasm.

Malignant melanoma with its varied clinical presentations and histomorphological patterns is a perplexing problem both for the diagnosticians and clinicians. A small proportion of melanomas present with metastatic tumors with unknown primary sites and at these sites they mimic the more common primary neoplasms. We hereby report a case of malignant melanoma presenting as a submandibular lump in a 40 year old female. This lump was present for six months and was rapidly increasing in size. On cytology it was diagnosed as salivary gland neoplasm.
