Posttraumatic osteoarthritis may lead to surgical fusion of the ankle joint if non-surgical therapy fails. The indication for a fusion of the joint is based on the pain and disability of the patient, radiographic imaging, and surgeon experience, with no strict guidelines. We aimed to compare outcomes after tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis (TTCA) and tibiotalar arthrodesis (TTA) to highlight the functional importance of the subtalar joint. In total, 432 patients with ankle arthrodesis were retrospectively enrolled. Group A (n = 216) underwent TTCA; group B (n = 216) underwent TTA. Demographics, O

Osteochondritis dissecans is a fairly recognized entity affecting the talus dome but subtalar joint involvement is not that common. We report a case of a 34-year-old male with osteochondritis dissecans of lateral process talus which was missed on imaging studies and identified intraoperatively. The patient was treated with curettage of the subchondral cyst at talus, followed by bone grafting and fixation of the osteochondral lesion with a 4-mm partially threaded cancellous screw. At the 1-year follow-up evaluation, there were no signs of recurrence and the patient resumed his complete activiti

BACKGROUND: Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is a complex 3-dimensional pathology characterized by peritalar subluxation (PTS) of the hindfoot. For many years, PTS was measured at the posterior facet of the subtalar joint. More recently, subluxation of the middle facet has been proposed as a more accurate and reliable marker of symptomatic AAFD, enabling earlier detection. The objective of this study was to compare the amount of subluxation between the medial and posterior facets in patients with AAFD.
METHODS: In this institutional review board-approved retrospective comparative stud

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to discuss the outcomes of treating calcaneal fracture malunion by restoring the subtalar joint with a reconstructive osteotomy.
METHODS: From May 2005 to November 2008, 24 patients (26 feet) with calcaneal malunions after a displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture were treated by osteotomy and autogenous bone graft. The subtalar joint was preserved. The mean time from initial injury to reconstructive operation was 5.7 months (95% confidence interval, 4.5-8.8 months). The displaced posterior facet was restored through a reconstructive osteotomy, wher

BACKGROUND: Pediatric flexible flatfoot is a common deformity for which a small, but significant number undergo corrective surgery. Arthroereisis is a technique for treating flexible flatfoot by means of inserting a prosthesis into the sinus tarsi. The procedure divides opinion in respect of both its effectiveness and safety.
METHODS: A database search up until 2010 was used to find articles regarding arthroereisis in pediatric patients. We summarized the findings of this study.
RESULTS: Seventy-six studies were identified. Eight of the nine radiographic parameters reported show significant

This study hypothesized that individuals who have a history of knee pain during repetitive weightbearing activities have a higher subtalar joint inclination angle than those with a history of foot pain. Study participants were selected on the basis of results of a written questionnaire that asked about the site and cause of injury and pain frequency and intensity. Pain items were graded on a 7-point Likert scale. Subjects were mainly young (18 to 32 years of age), healthy university students who had a history of knee pain (knee group) or foot pain (foot group) during weightbearing activity. Bo

BACKGROUND: Midfoot break deformity is common in children with cerebral palsy, presenting as extreme planovalgus, with midfoot dorsiflexion. Muscle imbalance, particularly between tibialis posterior (tib-post) and tibialis anterior (tib-ant), is frequently blamed. Recent work has shown that midfoot break is associated with an altered subtalar joint axis orientation but the impact on dynamic moments and moment arms remains unknown. This pilot study aims to determine whether a novel methodology for determining subtalar joint biomechanics reveals clinically important biomechanical differences in

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the biomechanical effects of subtalar ligament injury and reconstruction on stability of the subtalar joint in all three spatial planes.
METHODS: Fifteen fresh frozen cadaveric legs were used, with transfixed tibiotalar joints to isolate motion to the subtalar joint. An arthrometer fixed to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus measured angular displacement in all three spatial planes on the inversion and eversion stress tests. Stress manoeuvres were tested with the intact joint, and then repeated after sequentially sectioning the inferior extensor r

Understanding of the ankle and subtalar joint ligaments is essential to recognize and manage foot and ankle disorders. The stability of both joints relies on the integrity of its ligaments. The ankle joint is stabilized by the lateral and medial ligamentous complexes while the subtalar joint is stabilized by its extrinsic and intrinsic ligaments. Most injuries to these ligaments are linked with ankle sprains. Inversion or eversion mechanics affect the ligamentous complexes. A profound knowledge of the ligament's anatomy allows orthopedic surgeons to further understand anatomic or nonanatomic r

Recent published data have suggested successful union of subtalar and tibiotalar joints without formal debridement during tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion procedures. Although previous studies have reported on the importance of the proper guidewire starting point and trajectory to obtain appropriate hindfoot alignment for successful fusion, to our knowledge, no studies have quantified the amount of articular damage to the subtalar joint with retrograde reaming. We hypothesized that reaming would destroy >50% of the posterior facet of the subtalar joint. The bilateral lower extremities of 5 cada

Injuries to the subtalar joint are often associated with fractures of the talus or calcaneum. These injuries often lead to degenerative changes resulting in pain, restriction of movement and difficulty in weight bearing. This can cause significant deformity and disability for the patient. Occult injury of the subtalar joint has been described as an isolated event or in association with a subluxation/dislocation of this joint. They are difficult to assess with plain radiography therefore, they are generally diagnosed with advanced imaging like CT scan or MRI scan. We present a case of a 66-year

UNLABELLED: Twenty-two patients underwent a posterior bone block distraction arthrodesis of the subtalar joint between 1999 and 2006. The indication for surgery was loss of heel height, subtalar joint arthrosis, decreased talar declination with associated tibiotalar impingement, insufficient Achilles tendon function, malalignment of the rear foot, and pain with ambulation. There were 11 male and 11 female patients with a mean age of 46.7 years (range 20 to 71). The mean follow-up period was 27.3 months (range 12 to 63.9 months). Radiographic analysis revealed a mean increase in heel height of

The main objective of this study was to compare subtalar inversion stress views using the Brodén view with inversion stress views on helical computed tomography (CT). One of the drawbacks of routine radiography is the imaging of three-dimensional structures in a two-dimensional plane. We investigated whether the use of helical CT would lead to a more objective and clearer measurable method to determine the amount of tilt in the subtalar joint. A group of 15 patients with unilateral chronic instability complaints and clinically suspected subtalar instability was examined. The contralateral asym

Lateral column lengthening (LCL) calcaneal osteotomy is a well-established surgical procedure used in flexible flatfoot reconstructive surgery. The effects of LCL on subtalar joint (STJ) range of motion (ROM) have not been thoroughly explored in the literature. Our study aimed to objectively measure the average decrease in the total ROM of the STJ following LCL. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 15 patients (20 feet) who underwent LCL for various indications. Data for STJ ROM was collected from both the preoperative and postoperative periods. Mean follow-up for the cohort was 12 we

The subtalar joint is essential for the normal function of the human foot during bipedal walking, with its kinematics being pivotal for understanding foot biomechanics, disorders, and evolution. Traditionally, the helical axis representation has been used to assess subtalar joint movement, assuming translational motion along the rotational axis. However, recent observations challenge this assumption, revealing predominantly mediolateral translation during walking. To address this discrepancy, we propose a novel method that combines a rotational axis representation with a translational axis ali
