INTRODUCTION: Lead toxicosis occurs in veterinary patients, with few reports involving rabbits, and no previous reports using oral calcium disodium EDTA.
CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old male castrated Lionhead rabbit presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) for evaluation after a 2-day history of lethargy and a 2-week history of hyporexia. The patient had been observed pulling paint from the walls of the home, a house built circa 1900, in the months prior to presentation. The patient was moderately anemic with a hematocrit of 21% with red blood cell morphological changes cons

PURPOSE: We conducted a field survey about pediatric nuclear medicine. As a result, it was suggested that 99mTc-DMSA scintigraphy was performed at many institutions, whereas various examinations such as image acquisition and processing are not carried out using the renal phantom. Therefore, we developed the body phantom for the evaluation of appropriate administered radioactivities and image quality with renal scintigraphy in pediatric nuclear medicine.
METHODS: We created three differently sized body phantoms (1-, 5-, and 20-year-old models). These pediatric body phantoms were filled with a

We have developed a new genetic algorithm approach to search for the global lowest-energy structures of ligand-protected metal clusters. In combination with density functional theory, our genetic algorithm simulations show that the ground state of [Ag(7)(DMSA)(4)](-) has eight instead of four Ag-S bonds and has a much lower energy than the structure based on the [Ag(7)(SR)(4)](-) cluster with a quasi-two-dimensional Ag(7) core. The simulated X-ray diffraction pattern of the [Ag(7)(DMSA)(4)](-) cluster is in good agreement with the experimental result. Our calculations for the [Ag(7)(SR)(4)](-)

The present study deals with the therapeutic potential of combined administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) along with monoisoamyl DMSA (MiADMSA) against chronic arsenic poisoning in guinea pigs. Animal were exposed to 50 ppm arsenic in drinking water for 8 mo and subsequently treated for 5 consecutive days with 100 mg/kg NAC (orally) and MiADMSA (intraperitoneally), individually or in combination (50 mg/kg each). Arsenic exposure produced a significant depletion of blood delta- aminolevulinic acid dehydrate (ALAD) activity, increased the blood zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) level, and reduced bloo

Clinical chelation therapy of mercury poisoning generally uses one or both of two drugs--meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and dimercaptopropanesulfonic acid (DMPS), commercially sold as Chemet and Dimaval, respectively. We have used a combination of mercury L(III)-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to investigate the chemistry of interaction of mercuric ions with each of these chelation therapy drugs. We show that neither DMSA nor DMPS forms a true chelate complex with mercuric ions and that these drugs should be considered suboptimal for their cli

Previously we have shown that meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA, 15-500 microM) elicits concentration-dependent increases in intracellular calcium levels ([Ca2+]i) in untreated rhesus monkey kidney cells (LLC-MK2) (Pokorski et al., 1997, unpublished results). Little is known about the restorative effects of the chelating agent 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid on intracellular calcium homeostasis in the presence of lead. Lead interacts at numerous sites in Ca2+ homeostasis and may mimic Ca2+ to interfere with Ca2+-mediated intracellular signaling. To examine the effects of lead on [Ca2+]i and D

A differential pulse polarographic procedure was developed for the assay of dimercaptosuccinic acid and tin(II), components of a commercially available pharmaceutical kit for kidney scintigraphy. The method is quantitative and qualitative for both the chelated and unchelated forms of dimercaptosuccinic acid and tin(II) in a mixture of the two.

Using minimally lead-poisoned rats, we have measured urinary and fecal lead excretion in response to 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMS) administered i.p. or p.o. and compared it to that induced by dimercaptopropanol (BAL) (i.p.), EDTA (i.p.), D-penicillamine (p.o. and i.p.) and the combination of BAL and EDTA (i.p.). At doses of 30 mg/kg, parenterally administered DMS was as effective as i.p. BAL and these two drugs were more effective than the other treatment groups. However, p.o. DMS was only 20% less effective and was as effective as i.p. EDTA and the combination of EDTA + BAL i.p. and signi

INTRODUCTION: Lead exposure from discharged lead dust is a recognised risk at firing ranges. We report a lead poisoning outbreak among staff and their close contacts at a UK civilian indoor 24 m firing range.
METHODS: A retrospective review was undertaken of data collected on all patients at risk of lead poisoning identified either by direct referral to the Clinical Toxicology clinicians at the West Midlands Poisons Unit, or via the Trace Elements Supra-Regional Assay Service Laboratory at Sandwell hospital.
RESULTS: Eighty-seven patients were identified as having possible lead exposure, eit

A 37-year-old man was admitted to hospital after complaining of abdominal pain for the past two weeks. On admission the abdominal radiograph showed multiple radio-opaque flecks dispersed throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Blood testing showed hemoglobin level 8.7 g/dL and a blood lead level of 112.4 microg/dL. The family interview revealed that the patient had pica-like behavior since childhood. He was a site foreman and had been ingesting pieces of roofing plates for a few weeks. The patient was treated with laxatives and CaNa(2)EDTA therapy was initiated. The blood lead level then droppe

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to lead at levels encountered by urban children impairs cognitive development. An observational study suggested improvement in IQ when blood lead level fell, but the only randomized trial of chelation showed no benefit in IQ.
METHODS: We did a new analysis of the data from the clinical trial using change in blood lead level as the independent variable. The 741 children began with blood lead levels between 20 and 44 microg/dL, and were 13 to 33 months old at randomization to chelation or placebo. Blood lead levels were measured repeatedly, and cognitive tests were given at

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the adsorption behavior of some widely used, commercially available 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals onto different types of plastic syringes.
METHODS: Kits were reconstituted with 99mTc-pertechnetate diluted with 0.9% saline to produce maximum radioactive concentrations, as stated by the manufacturers. Aliquots of the solutions were transferred to four different brands of 2-ml syringes. The activity in the syringes was measured before and after injections or simulated injections. The amount adsorbed to the plastic syringe barrel and plunger bef

Mercury is a major toxic metal ranked top in the Toxic Substances List. Cinnabar, which contains mercury sulfide, has been used in Chinese traditional medicines for thousands of years as an ingredient in various remedies, and 40 cinnabar-containing traditional medicines are still used today. Little is known about toxicology profiles or toxicokinetics of cinnabar and cinnabar-containing traditional medicines, and the high mercury content in these Chinese medicines raises justifiably escalations of public concern. This minireview, by searching the available database of cinnabar and by comparing

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure in childhood lowers IQ scores, but its effect on children's behavior is less clear. Because IQ, per se, affects behavior, measuring the direct effect of lead requires measuring and then adjusting for IQ. In addition, either peak blood lead concentration, usually at 2 years old, or the lower blood lead level measured at school age may be the most relevant. Few studies have all of this information.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this work was to differentiate the direct effect of lead on behavior and the indirect effect through IQ and to examine the strength of the associa

In one study of children in 27 families with maternal retardation, those children with higher intelligence quotient (IQ) were more likely to have multiple behavior problems than those with lower IQ. If true, this result would affect clinical practice, but it has not been replicated. Because the setting of the initial observation is similar to the setting of childhood lead poisoning, we attempted a replication using data from the Treatment of Lead-Exposed Children (TLC) study, in which 780 children aged 12-33 mo with blood lead levels 20-44 microg/dL were randomized to either succimer treatment

The effects of chelating drugs used clinically as antidotes to metal toxicity are reviewed. Human exposure to a number of metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, manganese, aluminum, iron, copper, thallium, arsenic, chromium, nickel and platinum may lead to toxic effects, which are different for each metal. Similarly the pharmacokinetic data, clinical use and adverse effects of most of the chelating drugs used in human metal poisoning are also different for each chelating drug. The chelating drugs with worldwide application are dimercaprol (BAL), succimer (meso-DMSA), unithiol (DMPS), D-penicil

We present updated, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines from the Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ISPN) for the management of urinary tract infection (UTI) and primary vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) in children. These guidelines conform to international standards; Institute of Medicine and AGREE checklists were used to ensure transparency, rigor, and thoroughness in the guideline development. In view of the robust methodology, these guidelines are applicable globally for the management of UTI and VUR. Seventeen recommendations and 18 clinical practice points have been formulated. S
