Effective sucking is important for shortening hospital stays in newborn infants. Several studies have demonstrated that oral support can improve sucking efficiency. However, the effects of oral support on sucking pressure have not been thoroughly investigated. In our previous study, we reported the equipment configuration and analysis method of sucking pressure. That method of measuring sucking pressure was applied to cheek support. In this study, four newborn infants with low birth weight, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or multicystic encephalomalacia were enrolled. Their sucking pressures

AIMS: The effect of nonnutritive sucking (NNS) stimulation is unclear in infants with perinatal asphyxia. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of NNS stimulation on oral intake, discharge time, and early feeding skills in infants with perinatal asphyxia.
DESIGN: A randomized controlled study was conducted.
METHOD: Of the 94 infants, 47 were included in the experimental group and given NNS stimulation once a day before tube feeding by a speech-language therapist (SLT) in addition to hypothermia treatment. Infants' feeding performances on the days of first oral intake and disch

Infants with unilateral sternocleidomastoid tension and associated craniofacial, spinal, and hip asymmetries may feed poorly. Anatomic and muscular asymmetry stress both biomechanics and state control, increasing the potential for difficulty latching and sucking. A combination of positioning modifications to allow the infant to maintain his or her comfortable head tilt and turn, supportive techniques to restore alignment of oral structures, and handling techniques to help activate the weak contralateral muscles have been effective in the author's practice. Lactation consultants can promote pos

A pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular lesion, considered reactional, that usually occurs in the gingiva between the second and third decades of life. It is usually caused by traumatic injuries and local irritation. The purpose of this paper is to report a rare case of a 2-year-old child with a pyogenic granuloma in the upper lip caused by trauma--resulting in increased size, breast-feeding difficulties, and esthetic concerns, and to present the treatment instituted.

This case report describes an infant who presented with coughing and choking during breastfeeding. Comprehensive clinical evaluation of these difficulties included assessment of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. Stridor and difficulty interspersing breaths during sucking bursts were observed, although sucking mechanics were normal. Further evaluation of airway structure revealed asymmetric laryngomalacia. This structural problem, exacerbated by the breastfeeding position, impeded respiration and resulted in poor coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. This case underscores the ne

Since the 1980s the Department of Hygiene and Oral Health at the Showa University School of Dentistry has focused its research efforts on the development of feeding function and disorders. In addition, we have treated dysphagic children and dysphagic elderly using our feeding training program approach. The developmental course of the feeding function includes the following steps: 1) Suckle feeding and prefeeding period; 2) Acquiring the ability to swallow with lips closed; 3) Acquiring the ability to take food with lips closed; 4) Acquiring the ability to push mashed food with the tongue and a

The immediate post partum period may be particularly important for the developing relationship between mother and infant; little is as yet known, however, of the long-term effects of hospital practice during this period. This study examines the effect of extra contact during the first hour following delivery. An extra skin to skin contact and suckling contact was given to 22 primiparous mothers and their infants. One control group of 20 primiparous mothers and infants and a second one of 20 multiparous mothers and infants was given routine care immediately after birth. All mothers and infants

Biological functions like health, reproduction or the performance of specific behavior programs change over time. Therefore, their actual significance can only be understood fully if their history or development is well known. This point is illustrated with respect to behavior patterns in farm animals. Early life or ontogenetic processes strongly determine (sub)adult behavior. Prepuce suckling performed by group-housed veal calves during the age of 2 to 8 wk depends on sucking experience of the same calves during their first week of life. Restless behavior of fattening pigs is largely determin

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition characterized by limited tongue mobility due to an abnormality of the lingual frenulum. Long considered benign, it is now the subject of growing interest, with an increase in diagnoses and neonatal frenotomies, amid controversy stemming from the heterogeneity of diagnostic criteria and the limited level of evidence regarding long-term benefits.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to critically analyze the embryological basis of ankyloglossia, its clinical implications, the indications for frenotomy, and the medico-legal issues associ

INTRODUCTION: Malocclusion is one of the most prevalent oral health problems and can affect self-esteem, social relations, and oral health-related quality of life. The present study aimed to evaluate associations between malocclusion and orofacial dysfunction, nonnutritive sucking habits, cavitated carious lesions, and anxiety in Brazilian children.
METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 739 children aged 8-10 years. Parents or guardians provided sociodemographic data and information on the nonnutritive sucking habits of the children. The ch

Short lingual frenulum is a common structural abnormality with unknown mechanisms of origination. The frequency of occurrence among newborn infants can be as high as 4%. Short lingual frenulum may cause problems, if it restricts the movements of the tongue. Therapeutic indications for short lingual frenulum in newborn infants are mainly breastfeeding problems, whereas in children of preschool age and older the indication is defective pronunciation.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether the implementation of a paced feeding protocol in a sample of preterm infants with respiratory diagnoses will result in the development of more efficient sucking patterns, increased weight gain, decreased incidence of bradycardia during feeding, and shorter length of hospital stay.
METHOD: A total of 36 premature infants were enrolled into a nonrandomized clinical trial conducted in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The first 18 infants were traditionally bottle-fed. Following this cohort's discharge from NICU, nursing staff completed continuing education

Aerophagia and rumination syndrome are functional upper gastrointestinal disorders that are becoming increasingly recognized in otherwise-healthy children and adults. Aerophagia is primarily characterized by troublesome repetitive belching and abdominal symptoms that result from air sucking and swallowing. Rumination syndrome is primarily characterized by regurgitation occurring shortly after meal intake. Physiologic studies suggest that both disorders are a result of habitual behavior with associated esophageal and gastric physiologic deviations. However, the underlying etiology of these diso

PURPOSE: Feeding problems are common among premature infants and can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, and prolonged hospitalization. Effective interventions are needed to improve oral feeding skills. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a combined intervention-Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention (PIOMI) and Kinesiotaping (KST)-on feeding performance in premature infants, compared to each intervention administered individually.
METHODS: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with 45 premature infants (gestational age 30-34 wk) diagnosed with feeding difficulties.

The effect of three different feeding techniques (electronic automated feeder, teat bucket and bucket with floating teat) on oral activities, skin condition, health and performance of 144 German Holstein group housed veal calves was investigated. About 21% of the observed time over 24 hours was spent on oral activities and only about 1% with the particularly health-relevant activities at prepuce, navel or scrotum. As a consequence of sucking activities at pen mates in most cases reddening of the skin and, with low incidence (about 7%), additional loss of hair could be found. Altogether about 7

We studied four patients with acquired brain injury who were compelled to gaze at a moving object or the face of an individual who came into their sight, especially the person's eyes. The patients continued to gaze at the object or person until it disappeared from their sight. This behavior, referred to as forced gazing, is related to visual groping (part of the instinctive grasp reaction), and, together with a similar sign of visual grasping, constitutes a spectrum of visual stimulus-bound behaviors. In addition to forced gazing, the patients exhibited a primitive reflex such as a grasp or su

BACKGROUND: Non-nutritive sucking is used during gavage feeding and in the transition from gavage to breast/bottle feeding in preterm infants. The rationale for this intervention is that non-nutritive sucking facilitates the development of sucking behaviour and improves digestion of enteral feedings. Non-nutritive sucking has been considered to be a benign intervention, although it has the potential to have a negative effect on breastfeeding or on the incidence of later oral aversion.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether non-nutritive sucking (NNS) in preterm infants influences: a) weight gain, b
