Polymer-stabilized zinc sulfide colloids as a candidate calibration material for sulfide determination in water.

Accurate quantification of sulfide in water depends critically on reliable calibration materials. However, existing calibration materials pose significant challenges for routine sulfide analysis, whether they are in the form of Na2S solutions susceptible to atmospheric oxidation or ZnS suspensions lacking physical homogeneity. To address these deficiencies, we developed a series of highly stable ZnS colloids by using zinc acetate, sodium sulfide, and a polymeric stabilizer. Four polymers were demonstrated to be effective, namely, chitosan, hydroxyethyl starch, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and hydro

The sulfidation behavior of zinc during microwave hydrothermal sulfidation of heavy metal-containing sludge.

The heavy metals present in the sludge can undergo a reaction with sulfur, leading to their conversion into metal sulfides through hydrothermal sulfidation. Sulfur ions, possessing a strong sulfidation capability, can operate within a wider pH range at elevated temperatures. The high temperature environment promotes the sulfidation process of zinc within heavy metal-laden sludge. Increasing the temperature of microwave hydrothermal sulfidation and extending the sulfidation duration for heavy metal-containing sludge can enhance the growth of crystal size in the artificially synthesized zinc sul

A Bifunctional Sulfide Donor Approach for Ischemic Stroke: Leveraging Butylphthalide as a Carrier for Sulfide Prodrug.

The physiological and pharmacological benefits of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are well established, and various H2S and persulfide donors have been developed. However, few studies have examined the in vivo pharmacokinetics of sulfur donors, as most activity and metabolism tests are conducted in vitro, limiting insights into their clinical applications. This study utilized butylphthalide (NBP), an approved drug for ischemic stroke, by integrating H2S and persulfide moieties directly into NBP's carbonyl groups. We systematically compared drug metabolism in vitro and in vivo and evaluated donor effica

Oxygen Demand of Fresh and Stored Sulfide Solutions and Sulfide-Rich Constructed Wetland Effluent.

This study investigated the contribution of hydrogen sulfide to biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater effluents, and documented the effect of storage times and conditions on the BOD5 and COD of pH-adjusted sodium sulfide solutions as well as graywater wetland effluent. Initial COD measurements of sulfide solutions were 84-89% of the theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD), 1.996 mg O2/mg S, whereas unseeded BOD5 measurements were 55-77%. For sulfide solutions, all storage conditions led to declines of >15% (COD, BOD5), and >31% (sulfide). For wetland effluent,

Transient Kinetic Analysis of Hydrogen Sulfide Oxidation Catalyzed by Human Sulfide Quinone Oxidoreductase.

The first step in the mitochondrial sulfide oxidation pathway is catalyzed by sulfide quinone oxidoreductase (SQR), which belongs to the family of flavoprotein disulfide oxidoreductases. During the catalytic cycle, the flavin cofactor is intermittently reduced by sulfide and oxidized by ubiquinone, linking H2S oxidation to the electron transfer chain and to energy metabolism. Human SQR can use multiple thiophilic acceptors, including sulfide, sulfite, and glutathione, to form as products, hydrodisulfide, thiosulfate, and glutathione persulfide, respectively. In this study, we have used transie

Mitochondrial Sulfide Quinone Oxidoreductase Prevents Activation of the Unfolded Protein Response in Hydrogen Sulfide.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously produced gaseous molecule with important roles in cellular signaling. In mammals, exogenous H2S improves survival of ischemia/reperfusion. We have previously shown that exposure to H2S increases the lifespan and thermotolerance in Caenorhabditis elegans, and improves protein homeostasis in low oxygen. The mitochondrial SQRD-1 (sulfide quinone oxidoreductase) protein is a highly conserved enzyme involved in H2S metabolism. SQRD-1 is generally considered important to detoxify H2S. Here, we show that SQRD-1 is also required to maintain protein translation

Hydroxyl radicals produced from oxidation of ferrous sulfides promote mobilization of mercuric sulfide in soil-water system.

Mercuric sulfide nanoparticles (HgS-NPs) are recognized as a significant source of bioavailable mercury in paddy fields. The factors influencing the mobilization and bioavailability of HgS-NPs formed in flooded or drained paddy field-like systems are complicated and remain unexplored to date. Here, we show that ferrous sulfide (FeS) as an important mineral substance plays a crucial role in the dissolution and transformation of HgS-NPs in overlying water or during the drainage stage, as well as their bioavailability toward rice. Specifically, we found that oxidation of FeS significantly enhance

Synthesis of Sulfides and Persulfides Is Not Impeded by Disruption of Three Canonical Enzymes in Sulfur Metabolism.

Reactive sulfur species, or persulfides and polysulfides, such as cysteine hydropersulfide and glutathione persulfide, are endogenously produced in abundance in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, including mammals. Various forms of reactive persulfides occur in both low-molecular-weight and protein-bound thiols. The chemical properties and great supply of these molecular species suggest a pivotal role for reactive persulfides/polysulfides in different cellular regulatory processes (e.g., energy metabolism and redox signaling). We demonstrated earlier that cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase (CARS) is a ne

Kinetics, product distribution and atmospheric implications of the gas-phase oxidation of allyl sulfides by OH radicals.

Relative rate coefficients of the OH radical -initiated oxidation of allyl methyl sulfide (AMS, H2CCHCH2SCH3) and allyl ethyl sulfide (AES, H2CCHCH2SCH2CH3) have been measured at atmospheric pressure of synthetic air and 298 K: kAMS= (4.98 ± 1.42) and kAES= (6.88 ± 1.49) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 by means of in situ FTIR spectroscopy. In addition, the molar yields of the main reaction products of AMS with OH radicals formed in the absence and presence of nitric oxides (NOX) were determined to be the following: sulfur dioxide (95 ± 12) % and (51 ± 12) % for acrolein (50 ± 9) % and (41 ± 9) %.

Refining thermodynamic constants for mercury(II)-sulfides in equilibrium with metacinnabar at sub-micromolar aqueous sulfide concentrations.

An important issue in mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry is to explore the influence of aqueous Hg(II) forms on bacterial uptake, and subsequent methyl mercury formation, under iron(III) and sulfate reducing conditions. The success of this is dependent on relevant information on the thermodynamic stability of Hg-sulfides. In the present study, we determined the solubility of a commercially available HgS(s) phase, which was shown by X-ray diffraction to be a mixture of 83% metacinnabar and 17% cinnabar. At aqueous sulfide concentrations between 0.060 and 84 μM, well below levels in previous studies,

Oxidation of sulfides and disulfides under electron transfer or singlet oxygen photosensitization using soluble or grafted sensitizers.

Two different photosensitizers, 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) and benzophenone (BzO) or a silica bound derivative (BzO-Si) have been compared for the photooxidation of di-n-butyl sulfide and di-n-butyl disulfide. With either photosensitizer, sulfide photooxidation in acetonitrile leads very efficiently to sulfoxide, with sulfone and disulfides as by-products. Although an electron transfer mechanism has previously been established starting with DCA, our results are indicative of two competitive mechanisms using BzO as the photosensitizer, instead of singlet oxygen addition and electron transfer.

The role of hydrogen sulfide in the retina.

The discovery of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and the transsulfuration pathway (TSP) responsible for its synthesis in the mammalian retina has highlighted this molecule's wide range of physiological processes that influence cellular signaling, redox homeostasis, and cellular metabolism. The multi-level regulatory program that influences H2S levels in the retina depends on the relative expression and activity of TSP enzymes, which regulate the abundance of competitive substrates that support or abrogate H2S synthesis. In addition, and apart from TSP, intracellular H2S levels are regulated by mito

Hydrogen Sulfide and the Immune System.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is the "third gasotransmitter" recognized alongside nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). H2S exhibits an array of biological effects in mammalian cells as revealed by studies showing important roles in the cardiovascular system, in cell signalling processes, post-translational modifications and in the immune system. Regarding the latter, using pharmacological and genetic approaches scientists have shown this molecule to have both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects in mammalian systems. The anti-inflammatory effects of H2S appeared to be due to its inhibitory actio

Vascular biology of hydrogen sulfide.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule with important functions in many mammalian organs and systems. Observations in the 1990s ascribed physiological actions to H2S in the nervous system, proposing that this gasotransmitter acts as a neuromodulator. Soon after that, the vasodilating properties of H2S were demonstrated. In the past decade, H2S was shown to exert a multitude of physiological effects in the vessel wall. H2S is produced by vascular cells and exhibits antioxidant, antiapoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and vasoactive properties. In this concise review, we have focuse

Hydrogen Sulfide and Polysulfide Signaling.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been demonstrated to have physiological roles such as neuromodulation, vascular tone regulation, cytoprotection, oxygen sensing, inflammatory regulation, and cell growth. Recently, hydrogen polysulfides (H2Sn) have been found to be produced by 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase and to regulate the activity of ion channels, tumor suppressers, and protein kinases. Furthermore, some of the effects previously reported to be mediated by H2S are now ascribed to H2Sn. Cysteine persulfide and cysteine polysulfide may also be involved in cellular redox regulation. Homocysteine to hydrogen sulfide or hypertension.

Hyperhomocysteinemia, an increased level of plasma homocysteine, is an independent risk factor for the development of premature arterial fibrosis with peripheral and cerebro-vascular, neurogenic and hypertensive heart disease, coronary occlusion and myocardial infarction, as well as venous thromboembolism. It is reported that hyperhomocysteinemia causes vascular dysfunction by two major routes: (1) increasing blood pressure and, (2) impairing the vasorelaxation activity of endothelial-derived nitric oxide. The homocysteine activates metalloproteinases and induces collagen synthesis and causes

Cardioprotective effects of hydrogen sulfide.

The gaseous mediator hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) is synthesized mainly by cystathionine γ-lyase in the heart and plays a role in the regulation of cardiovascular homeostasis. Here we first overview the state of the art in the literature on the cardioprotective effects of H(2)S in various models of cardiac injury. Subsequently, we present original data showing the beneficial effects of parenteral administration of a donor of H(2)S on myocardial and endothelial function during reperfusion in a canine experimental model of cardiopulmonary bypass. Overview of the literature demonstrates that various
