Healthy sun habits acquired in childhood could reduce skin cancer incidence. We examined the sun exposure and protection behavior of an expected high-exposure group of children, and the association to their parents. Open, prospective cohort study. One hundred and thirty nine participants (40 families) kept daily sun behavior diaries (sun exposure, sunscreen use, sunburns) over a 4-month summer period (15,985 diary days). The Pigment Protection Factor (PPF), an objective measure of sun exposure, was measured at two body sites, before and after summer. All participants presented data from the sa

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing worldwide. Protecting the skin from the sun by wearing protective clothing, using a sunscreen with appropriate sun protection factor, wearing a hat, and avoiding the sun are recommended as primary preventive activities by cancer agencies. In this paper the recent data relating to skin cancer primary preventive behaviour in Australia and other countries is reviewed. Comparison of the studies in a table format summarizing the methods, objectives, participants, findings and implications may be obtained from the corresponding author. The sun protection kn

OBJECTIVE: Unprotected sun exposure especially during childhood is a risk factor for skin cancer. A combined use of sun protection measures is recommended to protect children. However, the prevalence and determinants for combined use have been scarcely studied in children. The objective of this study was to identify determinants of parental sun protection behaviour.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed in five regions in Bavaria (Germany) during school entrance health examination (2010/2011). Parents of 4579 children (47% female, aged 5-6 years) completed a self-administered questi

BACKGROUND: Sun exposure in childhood is an important risk factor for developing skin cancer as an adult. Despite extensive efforts to reduce sun exposure among the young, there are no population-based data on trends in sunburns and sun protection practices in the young. The aim of this study was to describe nationally representative trend data on sunburns, sun protection, and attitudes related to sun exposure among US youth.
METHODS: Cross-sectional telephone surveys of youth aged 11 to 18 years in 1998 (N = 1196) and in 2004 (N = 1613) were conducted using a 2-stage sampling process to draw

BACKGROUND: To prevent occupational skin cancer, it is essential that the sun-protective behavior of outdoor workers is adequate. The aim is to study the sun-protective behavior of Danish outdoor workers at work, at leisure, and on sun holiday and compare it to that of indoor workers.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, based on a 53-item survey completed by Danish outdoor (n = 380) and indoor workers (n = 119) in 2016-2017. Status as outdoor or indoor worker was decided based on self-report and behavioral differences were tested using (paired) t tests and multiple regression adjusted f

Sun exposure is the most important avoidable cause of skin cancers. We report characteristics of a representative sample (N = 2,324) of beachgoers in Southeastern New England during the summer of 1995. This sample was not employing adequate sun protection behaviors (83% did not often avoid the sun during midday and only 45% often used sunscreen). Important demographic and skin cancer risk factor differences in sun protective behaviors and stages of change for sun protection were found, especially differences based on age, gender, and degree of sun sensitivity. Consistent with previous research

According to the annual figures, skin cancer is the fastest growing type of cancer: one child in every hundred is currently at risk of developing a melanoma, the most malignant form of skin cancer. Surveys show that people are changing their behaviour when it comes to dealing with the sun. But only in small steps. That's why the Cancer League launches a sun protection campaign every year. Simple rules for protection from the sun: Between 11.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. (summer time), people should remain in the shade. A head covering and light, loose clothing should be worn in the sun. Tightly-woven,

INTRODUCTION: Ultraviolet exposure is the most important modifiable risk factor for developing skin cancer.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the knowledge and behaviors of medical students regarding sun protection.
METHODS: Between October 2023 and May 2024, fifth-year medical students filled a questionnaire on sun protection.
RESULTS: This study included 255 students: 134 males and 121 females. Among them, 100 (39.2%) students stated that they always used sunscreen, 43.1% used sunscreen on sunny days and in the winter, whereas 42% applied it only to the face. Of the 135 students who knew the two-f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a multicomponent primary care-based intervention to increase sun protection behaviors among adolescents. Excessive sun exposure in childhood increases the lifetime risk of melanomas and other forms of skin cancer. Interventions to improve sun protection behaviors in childhood have been based primarily in school and community settings, with little attention to the role of primary care physicians.
DESIGN: A 2-year randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: Primary care physician offices and participant homes.
PARTICIPANTS: Eight hundred nineteen adolescents aged 11 to 15 yea

The protective effect of sunscreens has been extensively evaluated in vivo as a measure of erythema induced in human skin and is expressed as Sun Protection Factor (SPF). In vitro alternatives that use human cells might overcome the limitations of testing on human beings. Here is proposed a broad and accurate in vitro approach for evaluating the efficacy of commercial sunscreens even under environmental conditions. This Cell dosimeter allowed the determination of Sun Protection Factor for DNA (DNA-SPF), using specific DNA repair enzymes and antibodies, and Sun Protection Factor for Lethal Dama

Formulations containing natural extracts have garnered attention due to the importance of these compounds in protecting against ultraviolet radiation (UV) due to their antioxidant and UV-absorbing properties, which enhance photoprotection and reduce reliance on synthetic agents. This study developed a photoprotective formulation containing a glycosylated flavonol-rich extract from Persea fulva. The crude extract was incorporated into an emulgel formulation, which demonstrated Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values of up to 48.94 at 20 mg/mL, reaching in vitro SPF values consistent with high protec

Accumulating evidence from numerous comprehensive studies has demonstrated that blue light, in particular high-energy visible light, can exert a range of harmful effects on skin cells. These forms of radiation are now known to be able to trigger oxidation reactions, DNA damage, erythema and pigmentary changes, and may also be associated with photoaging. Sunscreens protecting the skin from only ultraviolet (UV)-B and UVA rays can therefore no longer be regarded as sufficient to help prevent skin damage from sunlight, and products containing filters that can provide broad-spectrum photoprotectio

Actinic keratosis is a form of dysplastic epidermal lesion resulting from chronic and excessive UV exposure with a certain risk of becoming cancerous. Current guidelines advocated the use of sunscreens to prevent photodamage. An efficient photoprotection must involve both primary protective factors such as UV filters and secondary factors (eg, antioxidants) able to disrupt the photochemical and genetic cascade triggered by UVs. An in vitro model of human skin (Phenion FT) was used to assess the photoprotective potential of a sunscreen containing inorganic sun-filters (50+ SPF) and 0.1% octatri

IMPORTANCE: Sunscreen use is a modifiable behavior that can help reduce the risk for skin cancer, prevent sunburns, mitigate photoaging, and treat photosensitive dermatoses. A better understanding of consumer sunscreen preferences would inform dermatologists in their own recommendations.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics and the most commonly cited positive and negative features of highly rated sunscreens described by consumers.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The top 1 percentile of sunscreen products on Amazon.com as of December 2015 was selected according to average consumer
