Thoracic surgical oncology.

Thoracic surgical oncology involves surgical treatment of lesions of the thoracic wall, pulmonary parenchyma, or mediastinum (also including heart, esophagus, or trachea). The most common neoplasms of the thoracic wall are osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma. Histopathologic type, the use of chemotherapy for osteosarcoma, and completeness of surgical margins are prognostic for survival. Relative to solitary pulmonary masses, carcinomas are most common, with histopathologic type, tumor size, tumor grade, and lymph node status prognostic for survival. Of the aforementioned variables, lymph node stat

Gastrointestinal obstruction.

For cats that present with signs of gastrointestinal disease, obstruction is a primary differential. There are numerous reasons of gastrointestinal obstruction in small animals, yet there are several specific causes that are more commonly associated with the cat. These include linear foreign bodies, trichobezoars, focal intestinal neoplasia, feline infectious peritonitis, and megacolon. Clinical signs related to gastrointestinal obstruction consist of vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, tenesmus, anorexia, or weight loss. The course and onset of disease depends on the rate at which the obstructi

A Review of Tissue Engineering for Periodontal Tissue Regeneration.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common diagnoses in small animal veterinary medicine. This infectious disease of the periodontium is characterized by the inflammation and destruction of the supporting structures of teeth, including periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Traditional periodontal repair techniques make use of open flap debridement, application of graft materials, and membranes to prevent epithelial downgrowth and formation of a long junctional epithelium, which inhibits regeneration and true healing. These techniques have variable efficacy and are made more cha

Biophotonics in veterinary medicine: current clinical applications, translational challenges, and emerging opportunities.

Biophotonics, a relatively new scientific field, applies optical or light-based techniques to biology and medicine. These approaches enable non-invasive visualization, monitoring, and characterization of biological tissues and processes, thereby supporting diagnostics, treatments, monitoring, imaging, and surgery. Biophotonic capabilities could be particularly valuable in veterinary medicine, where patients cannot verbally describe symptoms and where rapid, non-invasive assessment may reduce reliance on invasive sampling and, in selected cases, sedation or anesthesia. This perspective review e
