Third molar extraction is among the most frequently performed procedures in oral surgery. The indications for extraction, such as dental caries, orthodontic considerations, periodontal disease, or associated pathology, vary between patients; consequently, the complications encountered can differ significantly. In this case report, we describe an uncommon complication involving the separation of a surgical bur during the extraction of a mandibular third molar. The patient underwent careful monitoring for three years, after which the retained instrument fragment was successfully retrieved under

PURPOSE: Video-based intra-abdominal instrument tracking for laparoscopic surgeries is a common research area. However, the tracking can only be done with instruments that are actually visible in the laparoscopic image. By using extra-abdominal cameras to detect trocars and classify their occupancy state, additional information about the instrument location, whether an instrument is still in the abdomen or not, can be obtained. This can enhance laparoscopic workflow understanding and enrich already existing intra-abdominal solutions.
METHODS: A data set of four laparoscopic surgeries recorded

PURPOSE: To evaluate the potential for artificial intelligence-based video analysis to determine surgical instrument characteristics when moving in the three-dimensional vitreous space.
METHODS: We designed and manufactured a model eye in which we recorded choreographed videos of many surgical instruments moving throughout the eye. We labeled each frame of the videos to describe the surgical tool characteristics: tool type, location, depth, and insertional laterality. We trained two different deep learning models to predict each of the tool characteristics and evaluated model performances on

BACKGROUND: With the advent of pedicle screws and advanced instrumentation techniques, internal fixation and stabilization of upper cervical vertebrae are possible in fractures of an axis. However, the proximity of vertebral arteries (VAs) poses a unique challenge to surgeons during these procedures and can result in profound physical impairment to patients. Cadaveric studies contributing to fine anatomical details necessitate conducting such studies.
METHODS: After receiving due ethical permission, this descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 10 cadavers in the department of Ana

BACKGROUND: Surgical Tray Rationalization (STR) consists of a systematic reduction in the number of surgical instruments to perform specific procedures without compromising patient safety while reducing losses in the sterilization and assembly of trays. STR is one example of initiatives to improve process performance that have been widely reported in industrial settings but only recently have gained popularity in healthcare organizations.
METHODS: We conduct a scoping review of the literature to identify and map available evidence on surgical tray management. Five methodological stages are im

PURPOSE: While there has been a great improvement in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, sagittal deformity correction has remained challenging. Increased rod stiffness has been shown to reduce thoracic flattening. We propose that the surgical technique can increase rod stiffness. A mechanical study was created to quantify the effect this has on construct stiffness.
METHODS: The sagittal bending stiffness of a constrained over contoured rod was measured using four different commonly used instrumentation systems. Pedicle screws were secured into custom printed blocks. One block w

Reduction is one of the most difficult steps in condylar fracture surgery, and a key factor governing the postoperative outcome. In this study we evaluated quantitatively the effects of a digitised condylar retractor on the duration and rate of reduction. In a prospective, randomised, controlled clinical trial, 48 patients with unilateral condylar fractures who were listed for surgical treatment were randomised to an experimental and a control group (n=24 in each). The experimental group was treated with a digitised condylar retractor, and the control group with traditional surgical instrument

BACKGROUND: In spinal instrumentation surgeries, surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the complications to be avoided. However, spinal instrumentation surgeries have a higher rate of SSI than other clean orthopedic surgeries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for SSI following spinal instrumentation surgeries and contribute to the prevention of SSIs by identifying high-risk patients.
METHODS: Records of 431 patients who underwent spinal instrumentation surgeries from 2011 to 2014 with a minimum follow-up period of 90 days were retrospectively reviewed. Associati

Degenerative spondylolisthesis is characterized by the slippage of one vertebral body over the one below, with association of intervertebral disc degeneration and degenerative arthritis of the facet joints, which cause spinal stenosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of 22 patients with symptomatic degenerative spondylolisthesis, operated on by decompressive laminectomy and instrumented posterolateral fusion associated with interbody fusion (PLIF). Mean age at surgery was 64 years (range, 57–72). Clinical results were evaluated on a questionnaire at

The aim of this study is to describe a measured return to instrumental dysphagia assessments for our vulnerable surgical patient population, such that best practice patterns could be resumed and our staff kept safe from transmission of COVID-19. A retrospective medical record review provided data on clinical practice patterns of swallowing assessment in an at-risk surgical patient population. Outcomes of this study support protocols that allow clinicians to safely resume the use of instrumental assessment and return to best practice in dysphagia assessment for our surgical patient population.

Adequate positioning of an orbital implant during orbital reconstruction surgery is essential for restoration of the pre-traumatised anatomy, but visual appraisal of its position is limited by the keyhole access and protruding soft tissues. A positioning instrument that attaches to the implant was designed to provide feedback outside the orbit. The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of placement with the instrument and compare it with the accuracy of placement by visual appraisal. Ten orbits in five human cadaver heads were reconstructed twice: once using visual appraisal and once

In environments in which manual decontamination and steam sterilization remains the primary method of sterilization, biofilm formation can increase the risk of disease transmission. To determine the risk of bacterial survival and contamination on surgical instruments, inoculated blood was dried on one instrument and steam sterilized (wrapped or unwrapped) in a set of 4 (including 3 clean). Two of 3 pathogens were recovered at a rate of 15% for unwrapped sets and 33% for wrapped sets.

The article represents a retrospective clinical and radiological study. Objectives. Evaluating the safety and efficiency of the surgical treatment by using the Unit Rod for scoliosis in adolescents and children presenting Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. Summary. Surgical management of myopathic scoliosis still causes controversies regarding the timing of surgery (patient's age), the pelvic inclusion in the arthrodesis or the advantages of surgery over the conservatory treatment. The patients are very fragile and a long surgery with massive blood loss could lead to serious complications. Unit Ro

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies cause an aseptic reaction that does not have specific symptoms and may also result in peritonitis, acute abdominal pain, an intraperitoneal abscess, or intestinal obstruction or perforation. We present a case of a surgical instrument left in the abdomen that passed into the transverse colon via migration after a surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 36-year-old female patient was operated upon, with a diagnosis of a hydatid cyst in her liver. Approximately 3 years after the surgery, she excreted part of a surgical forceps with her stool while she was defecating. In upright d
