Standardized technique for single-incision laparoscopic-assisted stoma creation.

To describe the procedure, efficacy, and utility of single-incision laparoscopic-assisted stoma creation (SILStoma) for transverse colostomy. Using single-incision laparoscopic surgery, we developed a standardized technique for SILStoma. Twelve consecutive patients underwent SILStoma for transverse colostomy at Osaka Medical Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases from April 2013 to March 2016. A single, intended stoma site was created with a 2.5-3.5 cm skin incision for primary access to the intra-abdominal space, and it functioned as the main port through which multi-trocars were place

Outcomes of continent catheterizable stomas for urinary and fecal incontinence: comparison among different tissue options.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively review the outcome of appendix, transverse tubularized intestine segments, caecal flap, gastric tube and others tissue options used as a continent stoma for urinary and fecal incontinence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1993 and January 2003 we created 179 continent stomas to treat urinary and fecal incontinence in 135 patients (81 females and 54 males; mean age at surgery 13 years, 118, 87%, aged <17 years). We used either appendix (112), a short segment of bowel following the Yang-Monti technique (49), gastric augment single pedicle tube (eight), caecal

Stoma products, diet support and complication awareness for community care.

Managing stomas in the community requires a knowledge of stoma products, what the products are, when the products should be used and how to effectively use them. This articles discusses the products in detail and the possible complications associated with improper use. Diet also plays a crucial role and community nurses are often asked for advice by their patients. The author also explore the role of community nurses in ensuring that people living with a stoma do not feel isolated and that their quality of life is not impacted.

[Criteria of enterostomy complications: classification and grading (2023 edition)].

Enterostomy-related complications are common in abdominal surgery. The incidence enterostomy-related complications varies according to the type and location of stoma, surgical procedure, and patient characteristics. Currently, there are no uniform criteria wopldwide for the classification of enterostomy complications. Previous classification of enterostomy-related complications were based on time of occurrence, clinical manifestations, or anatomical changes, etc., lacking uniformity and reproducibility. The concept and diagnostic criteria of complications are not yet clearly defined; and it is

A stomaplasty for total laryngectomy with a previous tracheostomy.

OBJECTIVE: Stomaplasties were widely used to prevent or revise stomal stenosis, however, a previous tracheostomy can limit the choice of some techniques. This study aims to deal with this condition through a novel and simple technique called "Collar stomaplasty". METHODS: This study involved 43 patients submitted for laryngectomy between 2017 and 2020. A tracheostomy 6-31 days prior to laryngectomy was performed in all cases. The collar stomaplasty, shaping the previous tracheostomy and surrounding skin, included 17 cases and the traditional X-shaped stomaplasty included 26 cases. Fisher's ex

A Consensus on Stomal, Parastomal, and Peristomal Complications.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a consensus on terminology used to define stomal, parastomal, and peristomal complications in Australia. METHODS: A list of stomal, parastomal, and peristomal complications was generated through group dialogue, which was informed by clinical and academic knowledge of the researchers. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify any additional terms and to create a database of definitions/descriptions. A library of images related to the identified conditions was generated. An online Delphi process was conducted among a representative, purposive sample of Au

Appendicostomy irrigation for facilitating colonic evacuation in colostomy patients. Preliminary report.

A method for bowel irrigation through an appendicostomy (antegrade colonic enema) for patients with a left colostomy is described. The appendicostomy is easily constructed without morbidity. Irrigation through the appendicostomy is performed with minimum equipment, uses a small volume of irrigation water, and takes a relatively short time. This may improve colonic evacuation in patients with left colostomy.

Risk factors for the development of a parastomal hernia in patients with enterostomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Parastomal hernia (PSH) is a common and serious complication in patients with enterostomy, but there is no current consensus for the risk factors for PSH from previous studies. Therefore, this study systematically analyzed the risk factors for PSH to provide a reference for prevention and treatment of this condition. METHODS: Seven databases and 3 registers were systematically searched from database inception to January, 2021. Study quality was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for statistical analysis. The data that could not be combined quanti

Prevention of parastomal hernia by the placement of a mesh at the primary operation.

INTRODUCTION: Parastomal hernia is a well known clinical problem, and up to 50% of all patients having a stoma will eventually develop a parastomal hernia. There are many surgical options available for the repair of a parastomal hernia, but the prevention of hernia development has only recently received scientific attention. The most encouraging results have included the use of a mesh inserted at the primary operation. We have, therefore, chosen to review the literature regarding the results of operative techniques, including mesh placement, for the prevention of a parastomal hernia. MATERIAL

Indications for and complications of intestinal stomas in the children and adults at a tertiary care hospital in a resource-limited setting: a Tanzanian experience.

BACKGROUND: An intestinal stoma, though a life-saving procedure on the care of many gastrointestinal conditions, carries significant number of complications. This study describes the common indications, complications, and management of stomas and identifies the factors that are associated with these complications in a tertiary care hospital in Tanzania. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of patients with intestinal stomas was conducted at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) between July 2016 and June 2017. Ethical approval to conduct the study was obtained from relevant authority before the commenceme

Segmental versus extended colectomy for colonic Crohn's disease in advanced therapy era: a systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The optimal extent of resection for colonic Crohn's disease (CD) remains controversial. Segmental colectomy (SC) may preserve bowel and avoid permanent stoma but has been historically associated with higher recurrence than extended colectomy (EC). In the advanced therapy era, contemporary data and Bayesian methods may refine this risk-benefit balance. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to December 1, 2025. The primary outcome was surgical recurrence; secondary outcomes were reoperation, permanent stoma, overall postoperative complications, a

Skin to origin of mesenteric artery study (STOMA): prospective study of distances between stoma location and proximal superior mesenteric artery.

BACKGROUND: Traditional siting of stomas, in the lower abdomen, has been guided by surgical dogma lacking evidence. In the lower abdomen, the combination of a thick and pendulous abdominal apron, can create a challenging and suboptimal site for a stoma. The anatomical determinant limiting delivery of a stoma to the abdominal skin is the distance of the SMA from the lower border of the pancreas. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare the distance between the traditional stoma site, and upper abdominal stoma sites, to both the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) origin and SMA at the

Delay in loop ileostomy reversal surgery does not impact upon post-operative clinical outcomes. Complications are associated with an increased loss of microflora in the defunctioned intestine.

Loop ileostomy is a common surgical procedure to allow downstream tissue healing, with the aim of re-joining the bowel approximately 12 months later. The reversal procedure is associated with a substantial morbidity up to 40%. Our previous research demonstrated that defunctioned ileum becomes atrophied, with extensive microbial dysbiosis. This study sought to investigate the potential influence of delaying ileostomy reversal surgery upon both clinical and pathological outcomes. Post-operative clinical data was recorded, including routine blood test results, duration of hospital stay, length of
