Involving hard-to-reach populations is pivotal for the tailoring and implementation of an epidemiological study in cross-border communities of French Guiana and Suriname.

BACKGROUND: Hard-to-reach, vulnerable and cross-border populations are often disproportionately affected by communicable diseases. Epidemiological data on viral hepatitis in French Guiana and Suriname are available for urban areas, but not for remote communities. The Maroni River, which separates FG and Suriname, is home to Tribal and Indigenous communities. Reaching these populations is challenging due to logistical constraints, cultural and language barriers, and mistrust of outsiders. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to conduct an epidemiological study of viral hepatitis [Maroni Hepatites Virales (MaH

A cross-border seroprevalence study on HBV, HCV, HDV and HIV in remote Amazonian communities on the border between French Guiana and Suriname.

BACKGROUND: National epidemiological data are essential to achieve viral hepatitis elimination goals. However, viral hepatitis and HIV epidemiology in French Guiana (FG) and Suriname is mainly limited to urban areas. We therefore assessed the prevalence, associated determinants, and knowledge, attitudes, practices, and beliefs (KAP-B) regarding hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis D (HDV), and HIV in the isolated area of the Maroni River, bordering FG and Suriname. METHODS: Between January 2018 and February 2019, adults (≥18 years) living along the Maroni were enrolled in this cros

Randomized single-blinded non-inferiority trial of 7 mg/kg pentamidine isethionate versus 4 mg/kg pentamidine isethionate for cutaneous leishmaniaisis in Suriname.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Suriname entails three injections of pentamidine isethionate (PI) 4 mg/kg per injection in 7 days (7 day regimen). Compliance to treatment is low and may contribute to increasing therapy failure. A 3 day regimen, including 2 injections of 7 mg/kg in 3 days may increase compliance. METHODS: In a randomized, single-blinded non-inferiority trial conducted in Suriname, 84 CL patients received the 7 day regimen and 79 CL patients received the 3 day regimen. Primary objective was the proportion of patients clinically cured at 6 weeks

Emerging Viruses in the Republic of Suriname: Retrospective and Prospective Study into Chikungunya Circulation and Suspicion of Human Hantavirus Infections, 2008-2012 and 2014.

INTRODUCTION: Suriname is a country on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It is unique in the sense that different ethnic cultures live together within the country, resulting in high levels of transport of both humans and products between the Asian, African, and European continents as well as the Caribbean. Travel is only one of the many factors present in Suriname contributing to the risk for the emergence or introduction of any infectious disease. Recently, circulation of both chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and hantavirus was reported in areas neighboring Suriname. Here we report a

Cesarean section in Suriname using robson classification: a two-year nationwide cross-sectional study on rates, risk factors and perinatal outcomes of cesarean section.

BACKGROUND: Optimizing CS performance is a global health priority, given the maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality associated with both underuse and overuse. This study aims to (1) determine the facility-based CS rate in Suriname and explore which women are most likely to undergo a CS and (2) classify all CS by the WHO Robson classification and analyze the perinatal outcomes. METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study in Suriname, using nationwide birth registry data that included all hospital births in 2020 and 2021 (≥ 27 weeks of gestation). Cross-sectional study of genital carcinogenic HPV infections in Paramaribo, Suriname: prevalence and determinants in an ethnically diverse population of women in a pre-vaccination era.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer is caused by carcinogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. Prior to the introduction of HPV vaccination in Suriname, we performed a cross-sectional study to estimate the prevalence of and determinants for genital carcinogenic HPV infections. METHODS: Women were recruited at a family planning (FP) clinic and a sexually transmitted infections (STI) clinic. Vaginal swabs were used for HPV genotyping by the SPF10 PCR-DEIA-LiPA25 system. Logistic regression was used to identify determinants for carcinogenic HPV infection. RESULTS: The prevalence of any HPV was 54.

Physical activity, fear avoidance beliefs and level of disability in a multi-ethnic female population with chronic low back pain in Suriname: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is an important cause for reduced daily physical activity (PA) and loss of quality of life, especially in women. In Suriname, a middle-income country in South America, the relationship between PA and CLBP is still unknown. AIMS: To assess the level of PA in women with CLBP of different ethnicity, and to identify whether fear avoidance beliefs (FAB), disability, co-occurring musculoskeletal pain sites and various sociodemographic and lifestyle factors were associated with self-reported PA. METHODS: A cross-sectional community-based house-to-house surve

Metal and metalloid levels in blood of semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) from Brazil, Suriname, and Delaware Bay: Sentinels of exposure to themselves, their prey, and predators that eat them.

Identifying animals as sentinels for humans and other animal species is an excellent method for understanding exposure to environmental contamination at different times and places. Shorebirds are useful sentinels because they have a world-wide distribution, eat a range of prey, and are eaten by a range of other species, including humans. We collected blood from semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) wintering in northern (Suriname N = 71) and northeastern (Brazil N = 61) South America to examine levels of heavy metals and metalloids (arsenic, selenium), and compare them to blood levels in

[More of the Surinam and Antilles drug addicts involved in the GG&GD (Community Medical and Health Service) methadone program in Amsterdam should be referred to the family physician for their methadone maintenance].

OBJECTIVE: To study the possibility of referring Surinam and Netherlands Antillean drug users from a 'low-threshold' municipal methadone programme to general practice for methadone maintenance treatment. (Methadone maintenance treatment for drug users leads to a more regulated life and makes it possible to implement measures to ameliorate their living conditions.) Fewer Surinam and Netherlands Antillean drug users are referred to general practice than native Dutch drug users. DESIGN: Descriptive. Antibodies against human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV) and expression of HTLV p19 antigen in relatives of a T-cell leukemia patient originating from Surinam.

Serum and peripheral blood cell samples from eleven relatives of a T-cell leukemia patient with human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV)-associated disease, were investigated for the presence of HTLV antibody and antigen expression. In addition to the patient, three family members were seropositive and a wide range in HTLV antibody titer was observed. The father of the patient showed the highest titer (173,000) and carried HTLV p19+ cells in his peripheral blood. Upon induction of proliferation of these cells by short-term culture in the presence of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and 12-O-tetrade

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure profiles for pregnant women living in urban, rural, and remote areas of Suriname, South America suggest higher serum concentrations in remote rainforest communities.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of organofluorine compounds used in industrial and consumer applications. The primary route of human exposure to PFAS is ingestion of contaminated food and drinking water, representing a significant and sometimes unavoidable exposure for many populations. Ecotoxicological and epidemiological studies have established associations between PFAS exposures and adverse health effects. Fetal and childhood development is a particularly susceptible window of exposure. OBJECTIVE: We characterized PFAS exposures for pregnant wome

[Histoplasma capsulatum infection, a manifestation of AIDS unusual for The Netherlands].

The history of 29-year-old male from Surinam with antibodies to HIV-1 and long-lasting fever, lymphadenopathy, pain in the right upper abdomen and a granulomatous hepatitis is described. The patient suffered from disseminated histoplasmosis, a fungal disease rare in The Netherlands, which is the indicator disease for the diagnosis of AIDS (CDC-IVCI). It is stressed that in seropositive patients coming from endemic areas, including Surinam, the possibility of this disease should be considered.
