Climacteric : the journal of the International Menopause Society2016eng
The aim of this case report is to show that hemochromatosis can present, unusually, with night sweats. At presentation, hemochromatosis often tends to have non-specific symptoms, making it easy to misdiagnose, especially if it presents with rare symptoms. Misdiagnosis of hemochromatosis can lead to lethal outcomes, given it can cause multiple organ dysfunctions if left untreated and hence the need to identify it early on. The case we present is a 41-year-old woman with previously undiagnosed hemochromatosis complaining of night sweats. She thought she was menopausal. The diagnosis of hemochrom

We report a case of a 70-year-old man with a 5-year history of red pigmented sweating on the axillae, groin, forearms, trunk, and and peri-nuchal sites. No identifiable cause of the pigmented sweat was identified. Biopsy revealed lipofuscin pigment leading to the diagnosis of idiopathic chromhidrosis. This case represents an unusual presentation of chromhidrosis that was not limited to the apocrine sweat gland distribution and ultimately revealed no identifiable cause. After failing multiple treatment options, the patient elected for a trial of treatment with 20% aluminum chloride solution.

Diffuse and abundant sweating in a middle age patient evolving for several weeks should raise suspicion of malignant lymphoma and infectious or neuroendocrine disorders before considering a drug origin. We report a patient who presented with severe and invalidating excessive sweating related to hydromorphone therapy for vertebral pain. Amongst their many reported side-effects, excessive sweating disappearing with discontinuation of the drug have been reported with some opiates.

There is a high frequency of dyshidrosis in Parkinson's disease. Daily use of an antiparkinsonian drug does not affect sweating. Mental sweating relates to the contraction period and seriousness. However, hyperthermic sweating does not necessarily relate to the contraction period or seriousness. Abnormalities in mental sweating are not necessarily correlated with cardiovascular autonomic disturbances. As the autonomic disturbance becomes more advanced, dyshidrosis becomes more common. Hyperhidrosis may develop with dyskinesia. Hyperhidrosis may be improved by the temporally administration of l

Many people who complain of excessive sweating have primary hyperhidrosis. This idiopathic disorder is characterised by excessive, bilateral and roughly symmetrical sweating, most commonly affecting the axillae, palms, feet and face. For some patients, excessive sweating is intolerable as it stains and damages clothes, reduces confidence and limits social contact. Treatment options have been limited but now include botulinum toxin for severe axillary hyperhidrosis. Here we review treatments for primary focal hyperhidrosis, focusing on axillary sweating.

We sought to determine the prevalence and nature of sweating disturbances in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), and investigated their correlation with other clinical features and with Quality of Life (QoL) measures. A questionnaire on symptoms and consequences of sweating dysfunction was completed by 77 consecutive outpatients, from three movement disorder clinics, and 40 controls. QoL was assessed using the disease-specific Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ)-39 and generic EuroQoL (EQ)-5D rating scales. Patients also underwent a clinical examination, including assessment with the U

An 11-year-old girl who had suffered right facial herpes zoster at the age of 6 years was left with anesthetic scars in the distribution of the third division of the trigeminal nerve. Since then, certain tastes provoked flushing and sweating localized to the scarred areas, lasting for 10 to 15 minutes after a latency of a few seconds. The response was evoked most readily from the ipsilateral posterior section of the tongue and was virtually abolished by local administration of anesthesia to the tongue. It remained unaltered after blockade of the sphenopalatine and stellate ganglia but was dimi

The distribution of sweating on the face was studied in 31 patients with Horner's syndrome. In patients whose lesion was known to be distal to the bifurcation of the common carotid artery impairment of sweating was confined to the medial aspect of the forehead and side of the nose. In more proximal lesions loss of sweating involved the whole of one side of the face. Facial sweating was normal in 6 patients with avulsion injuries of the brachial plexus and in 2 patients with a lateral medullary syndrome. These findings suggest that the pattern of sweating in Horner's syndrome may be useful in s

The quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART, Iontophoresis of 10% ACh with 2 mA for 5 min) is widely used in perspiration studies. However, it faces challenges such as suboptimal image quality and misidentification of hidden sweat glands as background noise. This study aimed to apply Gaussian filtering to reveal hidden active sweat gland density (ASGD) and enhance image clarity. ASGD data of 29 participants (18 males and 11 females) were collected from eight body regions - chest, abdomen, upper back, lower back, upper arm, forearm, thigh, and calf - on both left and right sides of the b

The regeneration of sweat glands (SwGs) plays a pivotal role in the functional recovery of extensive skin wounds. Recent research has illuminated the possibility of reprogramming human epidermal keratinocytes (HEKs) into induced SwG cells through the ectopic expression of ectodysplasin A. However, the clinical application of this genetic manipulation approach is inherently limited. In this study, we present findings demonstrating that a combination of six compounds can effectively and speedily reprogram HEKs in culture into fully functional SwG cells. These chemically induced SwG-like cells (c

The aim of this investigation was to study sweat production during exercise at 2 ambient temperatures (20 degrees C and 35 degrees C) and the concurrent localisation of carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the sweat gland. Horses develop alkalosis during prolonged exercise and the sweat contains HCO3-. Carbonic anhydrase is therefore of interest since it catalyses the reaction CO2 + H2O<-->HCO3- + H+. Four standardbred trotters performed an exercise test. Skin biopsies were taken from the neck, and sweat rate, blood and skin temperatures were measured. There was a close relationship between sweat rate,

This preliminarily study was made to examine the differences in sweat excretions from human eccrine and apocrine sweat glands in dynamic exercise and heat conditions. Sweat samples were collected from six young males while they were either running on a treadmill or sitting in a sauna cabinet. Sweat samples of at least 5 mL from the eccrine (upper-back) and apocrine (armpit) sweat glands were collected during a 20-min running (or inactive overheating) period. The samples were then analyzed for urea, uric acid, and electrolyte (Na+, Cl-, and K+) excretions. The results from a two-way repeated-me

BACKGROUND: In hypertrophic scar tissue, no sweet gland and hair follicle exist usually because of the dermal and epidermal damage in extensive thermal skin injury, thus imparing regulation of body temperature. This study was designed to reveal the morphological and distributional characteristics of the sweat glands in normal skin and hypertrophic scar obtained from children and adults, and to study the possible interfering effects of the scar on regeneration of the sweat gland after burn injury.
METHODS: Biopsies of hypertrophic scar were taken from four children (4 - 10 years) and four adul

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) replicates in salivary glands of chronic hepatitis C patients and is released into the saliva, suggesting that HCV may replicate in other exocrine glands. The presence of positive and negative HCV RNA strands was demonstrated by in situ hybridization, and of HCV core protein by immunohistochemistry, in sweat glands and keratinocytes in healthy skin biopsies from 15 patients with chronic hepatitis C and 10 anti-HCV negative patients with chronic liver disease. Positive and negative HCV RNA strands were detected in 9.6 +/- 5.2% and 4.2 +/- 3.8%, respectively, of the epith

Little attention has been given to the involvement of sweat glands/ducts in the pathogenesis of prurigo nodularis (PN). According to recent studies, PN is likely to develop under conditions characterized by dry skin, such as atopic dermatitis (AD), suggesting a strong impact of skin dryness on PN development. No therapeutic modalities produced complete resolution of PN without exacerbations. We previously reported that increases in skin dryness by sweating disturbance could initiate the development of AD. We investigated whether sweating responses were impaired in refractory PN lesions; and, i

BACKGROUND: Although a number of pathological processes resulting in amyloid deposition have been described in lichen amyloidosus (LA), no attention has been paid to the involvement of sweat glands/ducts in the pathogenesis of LA. According to recent studies, follicular structures are usually spared in serial histological sections of LA, and deposits of amyloid are likely to be confined to areas that display xerosis, suggesting that decreases in skin wetness by sweating disturbance seem to initiate LA.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether sweating disturbance could represent an early event that

Primary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating in palmar, plantar and axillary body regions. Gland hypertrophy and the existence of a third type of sweat gland, the apoeccrine gland, with high fluid transporting capabilities have been suggested as possible causes. This study investigated whether sweat glands were hypertrophied in axillary hyperhidrotic patients and if mechanisms associated with fluid transport were found in all types of axillary sweat glands. The occurrence of apoeccrine sweat glands was also investigated. Axillary skin biopsies from control and hyperhidrosis pat
