The central nervous system effects of canine gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) were studied on gastric acid secretion, emptying, blood flow, and the autonomic nervous system in conscious dogs. GRP injected into the third cerebral ventricle significantly (P less than 0.01) increased plasma epinephrine but not norepinephrine concentrations. GRP (0.1-1.0 nmol/kg) significantly decreased gastric acid secretion stimulated by an 8% peptone meal, delayed gastric emptying of the liquid peptone meal, and increased left gastric artery flow. Ganglionic blockade, truncal vagotomy, or adrenalectomy did not a

The functional characteristics variations during the magnetic storms were observed in both the healthy humans and in patients with cardio-vascular diseases as well as in cosmonauts at SOYUZ spacecraft and MIR station. These characteristics revealed a nonspecific adaptive stress reaction, which should be accompanied by the variations in the stress-hormone production rate. The neurohumoral regulation of the organism functions during the geomagnetic storms in a group of patients with cardio-vascular pathology and in a control group of healthy individuals were studied. The magnetic storm effect ch

Naloxone's pressor effects in shock may be mediated through antagonism of endogenous opioid inhibition of sympathoadrenal catecholaminergic systems. Since circulating catecholamine levels are not further elevated by naloxone in endotoxemic animals, it is possible that naloxone acts upon opiate receptors to enhance catecholamine actions at the receptor or postreceptor level. To investigate this hypothesis, we sought to determine whether naloxone treatment would augment the pressor actions of exogenous catecholamines (epinephrine) in normal and endotoxemic rats. Naloxone (3 mg/kg intravenous [i.

We investigated the role played by beta2-containing neuronal nicotinic receptors [nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs)] in mediating nicotine's side effects in the fetus and newborn. Pregnant WT and mutant mice lacking the beta2 nAChR subunit were implanted with osmotic minipumps that delivered either water or a controlled dose of nicotine. Subsequently, we compared the development of the sympathoadrenal system and breathing and arousal reflexes of offspring shortly after birth, a period of increased vulnerability to nicotine exposure. Newborn WT pups exposed to nicotine exhibited all of

BACKGROUND: The salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) is a key player in the oral cavity's starch digestion process. Only in the last decade has this enzyme come under greater scrutiny as a Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) stress marker. Acute stress has been demonstrated to cause a rise in sAA, which is associated with norepinephrine levels in the blood. As an analogous marker of Sympathoadrenal Medullary System (SAM) activity reflecting the changes during acute psychosocial stress, very few studies have directly demonstrated the sensitivity of salivary alpha-amylase levels to changes in catecholamine

Twenty-four adults who were undergoing operations on the abdominal aorta were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which epidural morphine sulfate (6 mg) was employed to attenuate the sympathoadrenal response to surgery to evaluate the possible contribution of sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity to postoperative hypertension. Patients who received epidural morphine required less parenteral morphine in the 24 hours following surgery, had lower analogue pain scores, and had markedly lower plasma norepinephrine levels when compared with patients in the control

Severe hypoglycemia increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with diabetes. Large cohort studies and scientific statements show that severe hypoglycemia is linked to higher rates of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular events, and mortality in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This risk is especially high in individuals with significant vascular risk, such as older adults and those with multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Hypoglycemia triggers several pathophysiological changes that increase cardiovascular risk. These include activation of the sympathoadrenal system, pro

The sympathoadrenal medullary system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are both activated upon stressful events. The release of catecholamines, such as dopamine, norepinephrine (NE), and epinephrine (EPI), from sympathetic autonomic nerves participate in the adaptive responses to acute stress. Most theories suggest that activation of peripheral β-adrenoceptors (β-ARs) mediates catecholamines-induced memory enhancement. These include direct activation of β-ARs in the vagus nerve, as well as indirect responses to catecholamine-induced glucose changes in the brain. Excessive sympathetic

Depression is associated with dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, overactivity of the sympathoadrenal system, and increased levels of inflammation markers. It is not known whether these biological processes are disproportionately elevated in response to acute negative emotional arousal by mental stress (MS). The present study investigates responses of neurohormones and inflammatory markers to MS in 14 clinically depressed (age: 42+/-10 years; 50% female) and 14 non-depressed control (age: 39+/-6 years; 50% female) participants. Heightened acute MS reactivity was do

Adenosine-sensitive nerve endings have been found in the renal pelvis which when stimulated increase sympathetic activity producing hypertension. When urinary adenosine concentration is lowered by intrarenal infusion of adenosine deaminase in one-kidney one-clip rats, peripheral sympathetic nervous system activity and arterial pressure decrease if the renal nerves are intact. These data suggest that a stimulus for afferent renal nerve activity in one-kidney, one-clip hypertension is intrarenal adenosine. This intrarenal adenosine hypertensive reflex was examined further observing the responses

Despite advances in emergency transfer systems and trauma medicine, the incidence of preventable deaths due to massive hemorrhage remains high. Recent immunological research has elucidated key mechanisms underlying trauma-induced coagulopathy in the early stages of trauma, including sympathoadrenal stimulation, shedding of the glycocalyx, and endotheliopathy. Consequently, the condition progresses to fibrinogen depletion, hyperfibrinolysis, and platelet dysfunction. Coexisting factors such as uncorrected acidosis, hypothermia, excessive crystalloid administration, and a history of anticoagulan

Regulation of sympathoadrenal activity has been a long-time target in the management of hypertension. Regulation of β-adrenoceptor (βAR) function has been the most therapeutically important of these targets. The development of effective antihypertensive treatments based on βAR antagonism paralleled the elucidation of the molecular basis of β-adrenergic effects by the family of βARs, which are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. βARs serve as the extracellular face of the transmembrane signalling pathway that results in the consequent activation of heterotrimeric G-pro

Prostacyclin (or epoprostenol), an arachidonic acid metabolite, is an effective treatment for patients with primary pulmonary hypertension. Interruption of chronic prostacyclin infusion can result in recurrent symptoms of dyspnea and fatigue. The etiology of this phenomenon is unknown. We hypothesized that sympathoadrenal activation could lead to increased vascular tone after abrupt termination of the infusion. To evaluate this effect, we monitored six chronically instrumented, awake sheep during and after infusion of prostacyclin. Prostacyclin decreased mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 14% and

Hypoglycemia is a profound threat to the brain since glucose is its preferred fuel. Thus, decreases in plasma glucose must be sensed and appropriate hormonal and neuroendocrine responses generated to restore glucose to safe levels (i.e. counterregulatory responses (CRR) to hypoglycemia). Recurrent hypoglycemia impairs these protective mechanisms, resulting in a potentially life-threatening condition known as hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF). During HAAF, the glycemic threshold is reset so that glucose levels must fall further before the CRR is initiated. The brain plays a criti

To evaluate the role of central nervous mechanisms and their relationships to the peripheral sympathetic nervous system in borderline hypertension, we measured catecholamines, angiotensin II (AII) and sodium (Na) concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with plasma catecholamines concomitantly in 12 young men with borderline hypertension and 7 age-matched healthy normotensive men on ordinary salt intake. Plasma norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) were higher in the borderline hypertensives than in the normotensives (NE: 239 +/- 15 vs 190 +/- 11 pg/ml, p less than 0.05, E: 83 +/- 9 vs 43

Hypoglycaemia represents an important side effect of insulin therapy and insulin secretagogues. It can occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Also, some associations between hypoglycaemia and cardiovascular (CV) risk have been reported. Several mechanisms may be involved, including the sympathoadrenal system, hypokalaemia, endothelial dysfunction, coagulation, platelets, inflammation, atherothrombosis and impaired autonomic cardiac reflexes. This narrative review discusses the associations of hypoglycaemia with CV diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD), cardiac a

The spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are a genetically hypertensive strain with vulnerability to brain ischemia and stress. In SHR, the brain Angiotensin II (Ang II) system is chronically stimulated, resulting in brain artery remodeling and inflammation. Pretreatment with Ang II AT(1) receptor antagonists protects from brain ischemia and prevents the hormonal and sympathoadrenal response to stress. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effects of AT(1) receptor antagonists are partially responsible for preventing the development of stress-induced gastric ulcers. We asked whether AT(1) recept

Hypertonic solutions act in the central nervous system (CNS) to increase mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) by activation of the sympathoadrenal axis. However, adrenal nerve activity (pre- and postganglionic nerve fibers) has not been determined during central osmotic stimulation. Therefore, these experiments evaluated adrenal (AdSNA) and renal (RSNA) sympathetic nerve activity, MAP, and heart rate (HR) following CNS administration of isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic sodium chloride solutions in chloralose-anesthetized rats. Injection of isotonic saline (5 microliters) did not alter MAP, HR

Compounds from several different pharmacological classes were tested for their ability to reverse the muscular rigidity induced by an intravenous dose of fentanyl that also caused loss of the righting reflex (LOR). Opioid antagonists reversed the entire syndrome--LOR and rigidity but, generally, rigidity could be reversed nonspecifically by doses of compounds that caused LOR by themselves (e.g., CNS depressants). Muscle relaxants and agonists of histamine, which appeared to be acting peripherally, were also effective. On the other hand, serotonergic drugs and dopamine agonists were not. Howeve

Results from animal experimentation suggest a 2-way interaction between leptin and the sympathetic nervous system, with leptin causing sympathetic activation and conversely, with the sympathetic system exercising regulatory feedback inhibition over leptin release. We have now tested this hypothesis in humans. In the absence of results from leptin infusions, to test for sympathetic stimulation of leptin release, we sought a quantitative naturalistic linkage of sympathetic activity with leptin plasma concentration across a broad range of leptin values in men of widely differing adiposity.
