Genome-wide SNP data support species boundaries in sympatric Polylepis Ruiz & Pav. (Rosaceae) species from Bolivia and Ecuador.

Species delimitation in the South American genus Polylepis is notoriously challenging due to high morphological similarity and phenotypic plasticity, likely driven by hybridization and gene flow. Previous phylogenetic studies suggested that genetic structure aligns more strongly with geography than with taxonomy, questioning existing species concepts and hampering conservation efforts. We used double-digest RAD sequencing (ddRADseq) to generate genome-wide SNP data for 11 Polylepis species sampled across multiple localities in Bolivia and Ecuador. Population genetic analyses, phylogenetic infe

Occurrence of brachylaimid trematodes, alive and shell-trapped, in sympatric species of terrestrial gastropods in France.

Following the detection of Brachylaima spp., which are potentially pathogenic for domestic animals and humans, in Cornu aspersum and Cepaea nemoralis at a rural site in France, we investigated trematode distribution among sympatric gastropod species to assess their role in the parasite life cycle. Eight species were investigated (Cepaea nemoralis, Cernuella neglecta, Clausilia bidentata, Cochlicella acuta, Cornu aspersum, Lauria cylindracea, Pomatias elegans, and Theba pisana). Four species were parasitised by trematodes: C. aspersum (prevalence 56%), C. nemoralis (10%), and T. pisana (2%) as

Host species-driven genetic structure of respiratory mites in two sympatric marine mammal species.

Understanding the factors shaping parasite population structure is key to unravelling host-parasite coevolution and transmission dynamics. Respiratory mites of the genus Orthohalarachne (Acari: Halarachnidae) are obligate parasites infecting the respiratory tract of otariids, yet their population genetics remain largely unexplored. Here, we examined the genetic structure of O. attenuata and O. diminuata infecting two sympatric hosts, the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis; SAFS) and the South American sea lion (Otaria byronia; SASL), across their distribution ranges. Genetic anal

Cytological and isoenzyme analysis of the Bucay and Quevedo cytotypes of the Onchocerciasis vector Simulium exiguum (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Ecuador.

Four cytotypes of Simulium exiguum occur in Ecuador, where this morphospecies is the primary vector of onchocerciasis. In this paper, we give the first full description of the banding pattern of the larval polytene chromosomes of the Quevedo cytotype and assess its degree of genetic separation from the Bucay cytotype. Both cytotypes differ from the chromosomal standard sequence (of the Cayapa cytotype) by the fixed inversions IIL-5 and IIL-6. The Quevedo cytotype additionally differs from the standard and Bucay cytotypes by possessing a differentiated X chromosome, which is indicated by the in

Prevalence of Trichinella spp. in North Spain wild fauna and new variety of Trichinella britovi identification.

Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi live in apparent sympatry among wild fauna of the Iberian Peninsula. In the present study 105 Trichinella isolates from wild mammals were typed by inter-sequence simple repeat PCR (ISSR-PCR). All isolates identified as T. spiralis were indistinguishable from the ISS48 reference strain. Among those belonging to T. britovi, four variations were clearly distinguishable; two of them, ISS11 C-76 and ISS86 MON, had been previously detected while the ISS2 reference strain and Trichinella Rioja 3, (MVUL/SP/02/R3) had not been reported before. Sex Attractant Pheromones of Virgin Queens of Sympatric Slave-Making Ant Species in the Genus Polyergus, and their Possible Roles in Reproductive Isolation.

Species of the ant genus Polyergus are social parasites that steal brood from colonies of their hosts in the closely related genus Formica. Upon emergence as adults in a mixed population, host Formica workers carry out all the normal worker functions within the Polyergus colony, including foraging, feeding, grooming, and rearing brood of the parasitic Polyergus ants. Some unmated Polyergus gynes (queens) run in the raiding columns of their colonies and attract males by releasing a pheromone from their mandibular glands. There are two Polyergus species groups in North America: an eastern P. luc

Do behavioural defence mechanisms explain different levels of trematode infections in congeneric hosts?

Susceptibility and tolerance to parasite infection vary greatly between host species. The congeneric isopod species Austridotea annectens and Austridotea lacustris often occur in sympatry and can both serve as intermediate hosts for the trematode Maritrema poulini. However, the intensity and prevalence of infections vary greatly in natural populations, with A. annectens often being heavily infected and A. lacustris rarely being infected. To shed light on the factors that may be involved in infection avoidance in A. lacustris, 100 isopods were collected and experimentally exposed to M. poulini

Diversity, consistency, and seasonality in parasite assemblages of two sympatric marine fish Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pagellus bogaraveo (Brünnich, 1768) (Perciformes: Sparidae) off the coast of Algeria in the western Mediterranean Sea.

Various host characteristics (i. e., feeding habits, geographic distribution) and habitat characteristics (i.e., seasonality) influence the structure of parasite assemblages. To compare the parasite assemblages of hosts representatives of two genera of the same fish family, simultaneously occupying a geographic region, and to examine if seasonal variations influence parasite occurrence and abundance, we examined the parasite assemblages of two sympatric marine fish, Pagrus pagrus (n = 308) and Pagellus bogaraveo (n = 315) off the coast of Algeria in the western Mediterranean. Adaptive Introgression across Semipermeable Species Boundaries between Local Helicoverpa zea and Invasive Helicoverpa armigera Moths.

Hybridization between invasive and native species has raised global concern, given the dramatic increase in species range shifts and pest outbreaks due to anthropogenic dispersal. Nevertheless, secondary contact between sister lineages of local and invasive species provides a natural laboratory to understand the factors that determine introgression and the maintenance or loss of species barriers. Here, we characterize the early evolutionary outcomes following secondary contact between invasive Helicoverpa armigera and native H. zea in Brazil. We carried out whole-genome resequencing of Helicov

Genetically distinct Glossina fuscipes fuscipes populations in the Lake Kyoga region of Uganda and its relevance for human African trypanosomiasis.

Tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) are the sole vectors of Trypanosoma brucei--the agent of human (HAT) and animal (AAT) trypanosomiasis. Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (Gff) is the main vector species in Uganda--the only country where the two forms of HAT disease (rhodesiense and gambiense) occur, with gambiense limited to the northwest. Gff populations cluster in three genetically distinct groups in northern, southern, and western Uganda, respectively, with a contact zone present in central Uganda. Understanding the dynamics of this contact zone is epidemiologically important as the merger of the two

Strong assortative mating with nest site partitioning may facilitate species coexistence during secondary contact in island birds.

Species coexistence is critical to the assembly of biodiverse communities. When closely related species come into secondary contact, competitive and reproductive interactions can both influence the potential for coexistence. We tested whether ecological and/or evolutionary factors affect coexistence dynamics in a pair of closely related honeyeaters that have come into secondary contact in the Solomon Islands. Myzomela cardinalis colonized the island of Makira and established a population in sympatry with the endemic M. tristrami. These taxa are ecologically similar and hybridize. If ecological

Anopheles (Kerteszia) cruzii, the main malaria vector in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is a complex of at least five cryptic species.

Malaria, a tropical disease caused by Plasmodium and transmitted by Anopheles, remains a public health concern in Brazil. While most cases occur in the Amazon, transmission persists in the Atlantic Forest, where Anopheles mosquitoes of the Kerteszia subgenus are the primary vectors of human and simian malaria. Previous studies using cytogenetics, isoenzymes, and molecular markers have suggested cryptic species within Anopheles (Kerteszia) cruzii and Anopheles (Kerteszia) bellator. We sequenced 55 genomes: 35 An. cruzii s.l. (four with Nanopore and 31 with Illumina), 12 An. bellator s.l., and e

Sperm as a speciation phenotype in promiscuous songbirds.

Sperm morphology varies considerably among species. Sperm traits may contribute to speciation if they diverge fast in allopatry and cause conspecific sperm precedence upon secondary contact. However, their role in driving prezygotic isolation has been poorly investigated. Here we test the hypothesis that, early in the speciation process, female promiscuity promotes a reduction in overlap in sperm length distributions among songbird populations. We assembled a data set of 20 pairs of populations with known sperm length distributions, a published estimate of divergence time, and an index of fema

Evidence of Linezolid Resistance and Virulence Factors in Enterococcus spp. Isolates from Wild and Domestic Ruminants, Italy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance patterns against selected critically and highly important antibiotics (quinupristin/dalfopristin, vancomycin, and linezolid) in 48 Enterococcus isolates obtained from wild (red deer and Apennine chamois) and domestic (cattle, sheep, and goats) ruminants living with varying degrees of sympatry in the protected area of Maiella National Park (central Italy). According to CLSI breakpoints, 9 out of 48 isolates (18.8%) showed resistance to at least one antibiotic. One Apennine chamois isolate was resistant to all tested antibiotics. The PCR scree

Hybridization between Crocodylus acutus and Crocodylus moreletii in the Yucatan Peninsula: I. Evidence from mitochondrial DNA and morphology.

The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) and the Morelet's crocodile (C. moreletii) are broadly sympatric in Belize and Mexico. The presence of morphologically anomalous individuals in the overlapping range area suggests possible hybridization between these species. Analysis of 477 base pairs of the mitochondrial tRNA(Pro)-tRNA(Phe)-Dloop region revealed the presence of pure C. acutus (N=43) and C. moreletii (N=56), as well as a high proportion of interspecific hybrids (N=17, 14.6%) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Although all individuals could be assigned to one species or other based on

A PCR-RFLP assay for the distinction between Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica.

Fascioliasis is of well-known veterinary importance and an increasing human health problem, with reported cases in the five continents. The causative agents, Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, present geographical distributions, which overlap in many regions of Africa and Asia, and in which the differentiation of both species is usually difficult because of the many variations in their morphological characteristics. Moreover, in humans, liver fluke classification cannot be achieved by clinical, pathological, coprological or immunological methods. The differential diagnosis between F. he

Sympatric Occurrence of Five Exophilic Tick Species in the Levice Region (Southwestern Slovakia) and Their Infection with Tick-Borne Pathogens.

Among the 24 tick species documented in Slovakia, Ixodes ricinus is the most widespread and abundant. In some sites, 2-5 epidemiologically important tick species co-occur. Such sites represent hotspots for studying the co-circulation of tick-borne pathogens. Sympatric occurrence of five exophilic species (I. ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus, D. marginatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, and H. inermis) was confirmed in the environs of the Žemberovce village (Levice region, south-western Slovakia). Differences in metaviromes between Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus from sympatric areas on Hainan Island and the Leizhou Peninsula, China.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are the most important vector mosquito species globally and are capable of transmitting various viral diseases, such as dengue fever, zika virus disease, and chikungunya fever. Although they overlap in terms of ecological niches and geographical distribution, their virus carriage and transmission capacities differ significantly. Metavirome studies can provide new perspectives for understanding these differences. METHODS: In this study, next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to analyze the epidemiologically significant metaviromes of Ae. aegypti

Human sporotrichosis beyond the epidemic front reveals classical transmission types in Espírito Santo, Brazil.

Sporotrichosis has emerged as the main subcutaneous mycosis of humans and animals around the world. With particular differences in frequency, the major species includes Sporothrix brasiliensis, S. schenckii, S. globosa and S. luriei. In Brazil, the main aspect of this epidemic is based on the zoonotic transmission through the scratches and bites of diseased cats contaminated with S. brasiliensis. Areas free of feline sporotrichosis are poorly characterised in Brazil. We investigated by molecular tools the epidemiology of human sporotrichosis in the Espírito Santo (ES) state, an area adjacent t
