Assessment of baseline symptom burden in treatment-naïve patients with lung cancer: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer who have not yet begun treatment may already be experiencing major symptoms produced by their disease. Understanding the symptomatic effects of cancer treatment requires knowledge of pretreatment symptoms (both severity and interference with daily activities). We assessed pretreatment symptom severity, interference, and quality of life (QOL) in treatment-naïve patients with lung cancer and report factors that correlated with symptom severity. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of data collected at initial intake. Symptoms/interfere

Mood-Reactive Self-Esteem and Depression Vulnerability: Person-Specific Symptom Dynamics via Smart Phone Assessment.

Cognitive theories of depression suggest that mood-reactive self-esteem, a pattern of cognitive reactivity where low self-esteem is temporally dependent on levels of sadness, represents vulnerability for depression. Few studies have directly tested this hypothesis, particularly using intensive data collection methods (i.e., experience sampling) required to capture the temporal dynamics of sadness and self-esteem as they unfold naturally, over time. In this study we used participants' smartphones to collect multiple daily ratings of sadness and self-esteem over three weeks, in the real world. W

Power law relationships between health care utilization and symptom assessment among people with panic attacks.

RATIONALE: Although people with panic attacks are high utilizers of health care, the role of symptom assessment in care-seeking is unclear. Previous studies suggest that symptom perceptions are linearly related to utilization but panic appraisal is not. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the relationships between symptom assessment and utilization are non-linear, displaying power law distributions. METHODS: This community-based study of 97 subjects with panic attacks assessed utilization of family doctor offices, total ambulatory utilization, and hospitalizations as well as sy

Symptom severity assessment in patients with atrial fibrillation after catheter ablation using a smartphone application.

AIMS: Symptom severity in atrial fibrillation (AF) influences healthcare use, but conventional assessments lack temporal precision. We evaluated the feasibility of smartphone-based symptom severity assessment after AF catheter ablation and explored predictors and variability of symptom severity. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this analysis of the ISOLATION study, 140 patients used a photoplethysmography-supported smartphone application to record heart rhythm, symptoms, and symptom severity three times daily and when symptomatic for 7 days at 3, 6, and 12 months after ablation. Symptom severity was c

The Utility of Neuromuscular Assessment to Identify ADHD Among Patients with a Complex Symptom Picture.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic assessment of ADHD is challenging due to comorbid psychopathologies and symptoms overlapping with other psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigate if a distinct pattern of neuromuscular dysregulation previously reported in ADHD, can help identifying ADHD in psychiatric patients with diverse and complex symptoms. METHOD: We explored the impact of neuromuscular dysregulation, as measured by The Motor Function Neurologic Assessment (MFNU), on the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD, affective disorder, anxiety disorder, or personality disorder among adults (n

Systematic Review of Symptom Assessment Measures for Use in Measurement-Based Care of Bipolar Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Utilization of measurement-based care (MBC) for bipolar disorders is limited, in part because of uncertainty regarding the utility of available measures. The aim of this study was to synthesize the literature on patient-reported and clinician-observed measures of symptoms of bipolar disorder and the potential use of these measures in MBC. METHODS: A systematic review of multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and other gray literature) was conducted in June 2017 to identify validated measures. Data on the psychometric properties of each measure were extracte

Pelvic floor biofeedback therapy in children: Assessment of symptom scores in responders and non-responders.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic Floor Biofeedback Therapy (PFBT) can be an effective treatment for pediatric lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Due to differing perceptions of efficacy and practice patterns, we sought to further evaluate PFBT in our practice. We hypothesized that PFBT results in quiescence of EMG activity during voiding and improves questionnaire scores in patients with LUTS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients undergoing PFBT and refined the analysis to females ≥6 years old with ≥2 sessions with completed voiding questionnaires pre- and post-treatment, active EMG during

Harnessing clinical psychiatric data with an electronic assessment tool (OPCRIT+): the utility of symptom dimensions.

Progress in personalised psychiatry is dependent on researchers having access to systematic and accurately acquired symptom data across clinical diagnoses. We have developed a structured psychiatric assessment tool, OPCRIT+, that is being introduced into the electronic medical records system of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust which can help to achieve this. In this report we examine the utility of the symptom data being collected with the tool. Cross-sectional mental state data from a mixed-diagnostic cohort of 876 inpatients was subjected to a principal components analysis

[A review of methods for the assessment of symptom validity: an update 2002 to 2005].

Continuing a previous review on problems and strategies for the assessment of negative response bias (Fortschr Neurol Psychiatr 2002;70:126-138), an update on research published from 2002 to 2005 is provided. More than 400 journal articles were included in the analysis, It was found that symptom validity tests or effort tests are generally accepted as the one method which is best developed for the assessment of negative response bias. Other methods, including questionnaires and rating methods, are reviewed. Three important applications of symptom validity assessment are analysed in some more d

Esophageal symptoms questionnaire for the assessment of dysphagia, globus, and reflux symptoms: initial development and validation.

Esophageal symptoms often co-occur. A validated self-report measure encompassing multiple esophageal symptoms is necessary to determine their frequency and severity both independently and in association with each other. Such a questionnaire could streamline the diagnostic process and guide patient management. We aimed to develop an integrative measure that provides a clinical 'snapshot' of common esophageal symptoms. Internal reliability and content validity of a 38-item self-report Esophageal Symptoms Questionnaire (ESQ), measuring the frequency and severity of typical esophageal symptoms usi
