This study examined the longitudinal effects of co-occurring psychosocial concerns, or syndemics, on HIV-positive sexual minority men's likelihood of engaging in serodiscordant condomless anal sex (CAS), a health behavior with implications for personal and public health. Participants included 390 HIV-positive sexual minority men from two prior secondary prevention trials. Over the course of the 1-year data collection period (up to 5 observations per participant), participants completed self-report measures of CAS, as well as six syndemic factors: post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood sexua

The rapid increase of fatal opioid overdoses over the past two decades is a major U.S. public health problem, especially in non-metropolitan communities. The crisis has transitioned from pharmaceuticals to illicit synthetic opioids and street mixtures, especially in urban areas. Using latent profile analysis, we classify n = 3,079 counties into distinct classes using CDC fatal overdose rates for specific opioids in 2002-2004, 2008-2012, and 2014-2016. We identify three distinct epidemics (prescription opioids, heroin, and prescription-synthetic opioid mixtures) and one syndemic involving all o

Obesity and climate change conspire to create an environment in which subclinical vascular inflammation leads to progressive atherosclerosis, which contributes to the number 1 cause of global mortality: cardiovascular disease. The syndemic model requires 2 or more diseases or contributors to disease (such as obesity and climate change) clustering within a specific population in addition to the associated societal and social factors, ultimately creating an environment supportive of a greater adverse interaction. This article explores the syndemic of obesity and climate change as a driver for ca

Background: Elder abuse is a common phenomenon with important effects on the health and well-being of older adults. There are important gaps in elder abuse measurement, as it is usually reported as the absence or presence of elder abuse, disregarding its severity and frequency. Objectives: Identify different ways of measuring severity and frequency of elder abuse and assess whether different experiences of severity and frequency suggest syndemic relationships. Methods: Through a sample of 534 non-institutionalized Mexican older women, we assessed how severity (i.e., number of abusive experienc

Global food security is currently a priority, especially amid a "grim regression" that is undermining efforts to eradicate malnutrition by 2030. This perspective argues that the current crisis is not merely a supply chain disruption but a syndemic convergence where biological threats and economic instability interact to erode consumer agency. We posit that vulnerable populations are forced into a "lethal calculation," prioritizing immediate caloric survival over food security and long-term health, thereby becoming trapped in cycles of ultra-processed food consumption. To address this, we chall

The Philippines stands at a critical juncture in its public health trajectory, confronting concurrent challenges of a rapidly growing HIV epidemic and the re-emergence of mpox, both of which contribute to a rising burden of disease among vulnerable populations. This article examines the emerging syndemic potential of HIV and mpox in the Philippine context, emphasizing how their convergence magnifies existing health disparities and exposes deep-rooted systemic issues. Recent epidemiological trends reveal critical shortcomings in surveillance, early detection, preventive outreach, and equitable

Suicide is a vital public health challenge among adolescents in low-middle-income countries. HIV might be clustering health conditions among adolescents in India, contributing to suicidal ideation (SI). We used data from a cross-sectional and conveniently sampled study among adolescents (15-19 years) at a tertiary care government hospital conducted between August 2018 and June 2020. Latent class analysis was used to identify syndemic vulnerability for SI according to differential clustering of mental health conditions, malnutrition, food insecurity, and parental loss. A total of 195 adolescent

Syndemics occur when populations experience synergistic and multiplicative effects of co-occurring epidemics. Proponents of syndemic theory highlight the importance of understanding the social context in which diseases spread and cogently argue that there are biocultural effects of external stresses such as food insecurity and water insecurity. Thus, a holistic understanding of disease or social vulnerability must incorporate an examination of the emotional and social effects of these phenomena. This paper is a response to the call for a renewed focus on measuring the psycho-emotional and psyc

Adverse perinatal outcomes are a significant contributor to neonatal and infant deaths. Mental illness, substance use disorders, and interpersonal trauma are often prevalent within obstetrical populations. Previous literature has documented the individual associations between these psychosocial factors and adverse perinatal outcomes. The co-occurrence of these three psychosocial factors might represent a syndemic among pregnant women, although they have not been described as such in the literature. Analysis of the interrelatedness and aggregate effect of these factors may allow for a more effe

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health like poverty, undernutrition, and infectious diseases often co-exist in disadvantaged settings, integrating with each other and enhancing health vulnerability. These conditions have been studied separately in India; the limited evidence on their combined spatial distribution remains. This paper applied a syndemic framework to assess the geographic co-occurrence of poverty, undernutrition, and infectious diseases across Indian states.
METHODS: State-level data were drawn from the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-21), the National Multidimensional

This study examined whether COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy (VH) and COVID-19-related factors interact to influence COVID-19 booster doses uptake among university students in Canada, from a syndemic perspective. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 4453 students at the University of Waterloo in 2024. VH was measured toward both COVID-19 primary and booster doses. Change in VH scores were computed to capture shifts in hesitancy over time. Logistic regression models assessed the main effects of VH and COVID-19-related factors on booster uptake. Interactions were tested using additive and mult

Substance use is a recognized driver of HIV vulnerability among sex workers, yet little is known about how behavioral patterns intersect with structural exclusion for African refugee male sex workers (RMSWs) in Europe. Guided by syndemic theory, we conducted an explanatory mixed-methods study in partnership with a community-based organization in Northern Italy. The qualitative strand included 20 in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions exploring experiences of substance use, stigma, and healthcare engagement. The quantitative strand comprised a structured survey of 150 RMSWs assessi

Detention and removal of unauthorised immigrants by United States (U.S.) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has steadily increased despite declining rates of unauthorised migration. ICE detainees are held in overcrowded detention centres, often without due process and deprived of adequate food, sanitation, and medical care. Conditions of ICE detention contribute to malnutrition and increase the likelihood of infectious disease exposure, including tuberculosis (TB). TB infection interacts with Type 2 Diabetes (DM2), disproportionately affecting individuals who are routinely targeted by f

BACKGROUND: Patients with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) experience difficulties with stability and trust in long-term relationships and have poor mental health, factors that may lead to suicidal ideation. We sought to verify whether psychosocial health problems among patients with STIs were associated with these patients' suicidal ideation and to examine the syndemic effect of multiple psychosocial problems on suicidal ideation.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 519 STI patients at the Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital. Demographic, psychosocial, and suicidal ideation informa

Gay and bisexual men continue to suffer the highest burden of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. Since the beginning of the epidemic, substance abuse has been shown to be one of the strongest predictors of sexual risk behaviors and seroconversion among this population. Recent research has focused on additional aspects of health risk disparities among gay and bisexual men, including depression and other mental health problems, childhood sexual abuse, and adult victimization, suggesting that these men are impacted by a syndemic of health risks. The involvement of gay and bisexual men with the criminal justice

Purpose: Bidirectional intimate partner violence (IPV), the reporting of both IPV victimization and perpetration, is likely the most common form of violence among gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (GBM) and is thought to be part of a larger syndemic of stressors. This purpose of this study was to examine associations between syndemic factors and lifetime bidirectional IPV among GBM in three Canadian cities to inform future interventions. Methods: Data from GBM (N = 2449) were used to fit three logistic regression models with lifetime bidirectional IPV as the outcome and four syndemi

INTRODUCTION: Globally, depression rates are high among men who have sex with men (MSM). Multiple factors may interact synergistically to increase this risk. This analysis assessed the prevalence of symptoms of depression among MSM in Brazil and synergistic effects of several factors.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted in 12 cities using respondent-driven sampling. Sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics were collected. The PHQ-9 was used to screen for depression. Having moderate-severe depressive symptoms was compared to none-mild using logistic regression. The syndemic factor

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about onward HIV transmissions from people living with HIV (PLWH) in care. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has increased in potency, and treatment as prevention (TasP) is an important component of ending the epidemic. Syndemic theory has informed modelling of HIV risk but has yet to inform modelling of HIV transmissions.
METHODS: Data were from 61,198 primary HIV care visits for 14,261 PLWH receiving care through the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) at seven United States (U.S.) sites from 2007 to 2017. Patient-reported

Substance use, intimate partner violence, and depression contribute to sexual risk individually, yet have not been evaluated as a syndemic for adolescents. Using data from 772 pregnant Latina adolescents, we evaluated these factors as a syndemic and tested the moderating role of immigration. Bivariate analyses showed syndemic score (OR = 1.40, p = 0.02) and severity (OR = 1.68, p = 0.006) were predictors for multiple sex partners, and syndemic score predicting STIs (OR = 1.15, p = 0.05). Syndemic severity remained significant in multivariate analyses for multiple sex partners (OR = 1.53, p = 0
