Extraarticular pigmented villonodular synovitis of the shoulder: a case report.

A rotator cuff tear was diagnosed in a 57-year-old woman based on physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging studies. At operation, an abnormal bursal lesion also was found. The lesion was completely extraarticular and was identified histologically as pigmented villonodular synovitis. The patient was treated with complete bursectomy and repair of the rotator cuff tear and remains asymptomatic 21 months after operation. Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a condition characterized by cell proliferation and deposition of hemosiderin into the lining tissues of joints, tendons, and bursae

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the shoulder after anterior capsulolabral reconstruction.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a proliferative disorder of the synovium affecting joints, bursae, or tendon sheaths. PVNS is further classified into diffuse and localized forms and rarely affects the shoulder. We report a case of nodular synovitis of the shoulder after arthroscopic and open anterior capsulolabral reconstruction. The histopathology and treatment of a nodular form of PVNS of the shoulder is discussed.

[Combined treatment of the diffuse form of pigmented villonodular synovitis].

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a specific lesion of the synovial membrane of the joint and bursal mucosa. In recent years it is frequently regarded as tumor like disease. The problem of therapy of the diffuse form of the disease is yet to be solved. Recurrence rates after partial synovial capsulectomy remain high (33-46%) as well as after operation combined with radiation therapy. The authors summed up their experience in combined therapy of pigmented villonodular synovitis. The method was used in 24 patients with the diffuse form of the disease, ranging in age from 15 to 62. In 18 of 24

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee in a child: a case report.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare proliferative process, especially in children. Pigmented villonodular synovitis can affect the synovial joint, tendon sheaths, and bursa membranes. Within synovial joint involvement, it is commonly seen in the knee joint but hip, ankle, shoulder, wrist, and other joints can be involved. The appearance characteristic is found on a magnetic resonance imaging scan. Complete excision and synovectomy are the usual treatment. In this article, we report a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee in a 12- year-old girl who underwent total synovect

Outcomes of arthroscopic management for pigmented villonodular synovitis of the hip.

INTRODUCTION: Early synovectomy is considered as the main treatment of pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) of the hip in young patients with preserved cartilage. The purpose of the study is to evaluate outcomes of arthroscopic management for PVNS of the hip. METHODS: Patients who underwent primary hip arthroscopy for the treatment of histology-confirmed PVNS by the senior author between January 2012 and December 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. We excluded patients who had less than 1-year follow-up or had undergone primary surgeries with other surgeons and then received revision hip a

Arthroscopic technique for the treatment of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the hip.

Open synovectomy remains the treatment of choice for pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) of the hip but has shown modest results compared with the treatment of other joints. Recent advances in hip arthroscopy permit a thorough evaluation of the joint surfaces, improved access, and decreased postoperative morbidity. We describe an arthroscopic synovectomy technique for PVNS of the hip. The use of additional arthroscopic portals and creation of a large capsulotomy enable successful visualization and extensive synovectomy of the entire synovial lining of the hip. The T-capsulotomy enables ext

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the spine: report of a lumbar case.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign proliferative disease of the synovial structures. This disease is most commonly seen in the extremities, and spinal involvement is extremely rare. In the relevant literature, 53 cases have been reported. We present a 66-year-old female patient with a long history of back pain, which progressed and radiated to the left leg over a period of 2 months. The patient also had a mass in the lumbar region on the grounds of spinal degenerative changes. Following gross total excision, the diagnosis was established by histopathology. In this report, we present

Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis in an unusual location in the knee.

PURPOSE: Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (LPVNS) is a rare lesion that can affect any joint, although it is most frequently found in the knee. Clinically, it is difficult to diagnose. Radiographs are usually within normal limits. TYPE OF STUDY: Case series. METHODS: We present a series of 9 cases of LPVNS of the knee in 9 patients with an average age of 36 years. In 7 of the 9 cases, the lesions were in an an unusual location, 4 in the fat pad and 3 in the posterior compartment of the knee. The other 2 cases were located in the meniscocapsular junction and the intercondylar notch,

[The neoplastiform aspect of a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee].

A case is presented of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee, macroscopic neoplastiform in appearance. The histologic examination leads to believe in a granulomatous rather than neoplastic nature of the process. The cause certainly is neither traumatic nor bacteriologic, but most probably dismetabolic lipidic. The neoformed mass, singular for its remarkable dimensions (12 cm. in length), nodular in appearance, pedunculated, had not yet provoked, at the time of operation, secondary osteocartilaginous and capsular-ligamentous lesions. At follow-up, more than 11 years later, no signs of re

A Rare Incidence of Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Ankle in an Adolescent.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis mostly affects the knee and other large joints such as the hip. Although the disease is most commonly found in adult patients aged 30 to 40 years, rare cases in children and the elderly have been reported. We present the case of an 11-year-old female who was found to have biopsy-proven pigmented villonodular synovitis in her subtalar joint in 2012. Five years after surgical excision, the patient has continued to be involved in competitive dancing and cheerleading without any pain in her ankle. Moreover, follow-up magnetic resonance imaging studies showed no evi

Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis of the posterior capsule of the knee.

Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis involving the posterior intra-articular structures of the knee joint is rare. We report a case of localized pigmented villonodular synovitis arising from the posterior capsule of the knee joint in a patient who presented with a history of repeated joint effusions and loss of terminal knee flexion. After successful, complete removal of the mass through the posteromedial portal, the patient was asymptomatic, with no evidence of recurrence during the 26-month follow-up period.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee presenting as a popliteal cyst.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a locally aggressive tumor of the synovium of joints and tendon sheaths. It is commonly seen in the synovial lining of the flexor tendons of the hand and in the synovium of the knee and less commonly in other joints. A case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee in a 60-year-old man, with an intra-articular origin extending extra-articularly, is presented. The interesting point is that the initial diagnosis was a Baker cyst.

Cytogenetic evidence of clonality in a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is an uncommon benign lesion that is characterized by diffuse synovial proliferation. Based on animal models, this lesion has been conjectured previously to be reactive in nature. In this report, the authors present the histologic and cytogenetic findings for a pigmented villonodular synovitis that was excised from the right knee of a 47-year-old man. Trisomy 7 was observed in 24 of 75 (35%) metaphases obtained from short-term culture of cells from this tumor. These findings suggest that some cases of pigmented villonodular synovitis represent clonal, neoplasti

[Pigmentous villonodular synovitis affecting the bone (author's transl)].

Pigmentous villonodular synovitis (P.V.N.S.) is a rare arthropathy consisting in a hypertrophic-hyperplastic reaction of the synovial membrane in circumscribed or diffused form. Involvement of the bond, found very rarely during the course of this arthropathy, seems to be due to compressive-erosive action of diffusely hyperplastic pathologic tissue and not neoplastic invasion. In this note there is a report on the cases of the "G. Pini" Orthopaedic Institute in Milan: 33 cases of P.V.N.S., of which 5 with bone involvement.

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis Presenting at an Atypical Site: A Case Report.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is an idiopathic villous overgrowth and pigmentation of the synovial membrane of a single joint. It is an uncommon condition characterized by yellow or yellowish-brown colour due to deposits of cholesterol and hemosiderin, excessive secretion of yellowish-brown synovial fluid, and the formation of brownish chocolate synovial tissue. This condition commonly occurs at the knee joint at the age of 20-50 years. Here we present a case of a 75-year-old male with PVNS involving the lower third of the right thigh who came to the surgery department and was eventu

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Glenohumeral Joint and Biceps Tendon Sheath.

A 34-year-old woman presented with paroxysmal, insidious shoulder pain with effusion. MRI demonstrated a permeative, intermediate-signal lesion on T1 and T2 sequences involving the glenohumeral joint and biceps tendon sheath. The patient was treated with arthroscopic synovectomy, debridement, and subpectoral biceps tenodesis, with histopathology demonstrating pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS). PVNS is an extremely rare lesion of the glenohumeral joint and surrounding extra-articular structures. Awareness of this condition is paramount for timely diagnosis and intervention before joint de

Pigmented villonodular synovitis: Four pediatric cases and brief review of literature.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign disorder of a joint which affects its synovium, tendon sheaths and bursas. While most cases of PVNS are adult patients aged between 20-50 years, few afflicted children have also been reported. Clinical signs of PVNS are insidious and non-specific. Pain, swelling and stiffness are the major symptoms. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the best radiological method for diagnosis of PVNS, as the initial X-ray is normal in early phase of disease in most cases. Therefore, diagnosis is often delayed or confused with mechanical disorders, haemo
