Hedgehog and Wnt Signaling Pathways Regulate Tail Regeneration.

Urodele amphibians have a tremendous capacity for the regeneration of appendages, including limb and tail, following injury. While studies have focused on the cellular and morphological changes during appendicular regeneration, the signaling mechanisms that govern these cytoarchitectural changes during the regenerative response are unclear. In this study, we describe the essential role of hedgehog (Hh) and Wnt signaling pathways following tail amputation in the newt. Quantitative PCR studies revealed that members of both the Hh and Wnt signaling pathways, including the following: shh, ihh, ptc

Ambiguity in the Dural Tail Sign on MRI.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas give rise to the dural tail sign (DTS) on contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI). The presence of DTS does not always qualify for a meningioma, as it is seen in only 60-72% of cases. This sign has been described in various other lesions like lymphomas, metastasis, hemangiopericytomas, schwannomas and very rarely glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The characteristics of dural-based GBMs are discussed here, as only eleven such cases are reported in the literature till date. Here we discuss the unique features of this rare presentation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-ye

[Human tail: rare lesion with occult spinal dysraphism].

Human tails can be classified as either true tails or pseudotails. True human tails are rare clinical entities. We describe a newborn with a midline sacral cutaneous appendage. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbosacral area revealed occult spinal dysraphism with tethered cord and intradural lipoma. Prenatal diagnosis of left renal agenesis was confirmed on postnatal evaluation. Surgical excision of the appendage was performed and histopathological examination demonstrated a true tail. The child recovered uneventfully and has been asymptomatic for 3 years. Dorsal cutaneous appendages are a

Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy, the tail of the learning curve.

BACKGROUND: The debate whether laparoscopic pyloromyotomy (LP) is superior to open pyloromyotomy (OP) remains actual. A recent review showed no benefit between the LP or OP, but in the studied randomized, controlled trials the learning curve was not addressed. Comparing LP including the learning curve with OP after the learning curve is questionable. In previous research, the learning curve of LP was analyzed. It was concluded that the plateau was reached after 35 procedures with a steep decrease in complications when comparing before and after 35 procedures. This study was designed to retrosp

A gelatinous human tail with lipomyelocele: case report.

We report a female infant who presented with a tail appendage bearing a gelatinous tip and an associated lipomyelocele. Magnetic resonance images revealed the presence of spina bifida and a tract in continuity from the tail to the conus medullaris. The tail was surgically removed. A human tail may be associated with underlying spinal dysraphism. Magnetic resonance or computed tomographic imaging is required in such cases for complete evaluation. This is the first case report of gelatinous-tip human tail.

Spinal cord regeneration in a tail autotomizing urodele.

Adult urodele amphibians possess extensive regenerative abilities, including lens, jaws, limbs, and tails. In this study, we examined the cellular events and time course of spinal cord regeneration in a species, Plethodon cinereus, that has the ability to autotomize its tail as an antipredator strategy. We propose that this species may have enhanced regenerative abilities as further coadaptations with this antipredator strategy. We examined the expression of nestin, vimentin, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) after autotomy as markers of neural precursor cells and astroglia; we also t

A cytoplasmic dynein tail mutation impairs motor processivity.

Mutations in the tail of the cytoplasmic dynein molecule have been reported to cause neurodegenerative disease in mice. The mutant mouse strain Legs at odd angles (Loa) has impaired retrograde axonal transport, but the molecular deficiencies in the mutant dynein molecule, and how they contribute to neurodegeneration, are unknown. To address these questions, we purified dynein from wild-type mice and the Legs at odd angles mutant mice. Using biochemical, single-molecule, and live-cell-imaging techniques, we find a marked inhibition of motor run-length in vitro and in vivo, and significantly alt

[Faun tail--isolated sacrolumbar hypertrichosis in pediatric endocrinology].

3 girls with Faun tail are presented. Local hairiness in the sacrolumbar area was associated with spinal dysraphism, tethered cord, intradural lipoma, meningomyelocele and dyastematomyelia, all confirmed by MRI. Moderate neurological findings were present in one case only. In all the cases the primary diagnosis of the principal spinal pathology was established by endocrinologist (two patients were referred by dermatologists, one by ortopaedist). This indicates that a physician of any specialty may have to establish the primary neurological diagnosis. Hence, the awareness of the possible connec

Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome and the tail of p63.

We report the clinical and molecular abnormalities in a 19-year-old woman with Rapp-Hodgkin ectodermal dysplasia syndrome. The physical features include mid-facial hypoplasia, uncombable hair, cleft palate and bifid uvula, lacrimal duct obstruction and dry skin. Sequencing of the p63 gene reveals a new heterozygous frameshift mutation, 1787delG, in exon 14. The frameshift results in changes to the tail of p63 with the addition of 68 missense amino acids downstream and a delayed termination codon that extends the protein length by 21 amino acids. These changes are predicted to disrupt the norma

Modified "tubeless" percutaneous nephrolithotomy using a tail-stent.

INTRODUCTION: "Tubeless" percutaneous renal surgery has previously been described at our institution. Avoiding external nephrostomy tube drainage significantly decreases the pain and morbidity of percutaneous renal surgery. However, internal drainage with a double-J ureteral stent still results in bothersome bladder symptoms, especially in younger male patients. In addition, removal of the stent requires uncomfortable office cystoscopy. We report a technical enhancement of our "tubeless" technique that uses a novel tail-stent for internal drainage. TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: A tubeless approac

Prenatal diagnosis of 'true tail' with cartilage content?

A human tail is a rare congenital anomaly with a prominent lesion from the lumbosacrococcygeal region. According to Dao and Netzky human tails are classified into 'true tails' and 'pseudotails'. True tails comprise only mesenchymal tissue (adipose, connective, muscle, nerve tissue, blood vessels, and cutis). They are presumed to be remnants of the embryologic tail. All other lumbosacrococcygeal protrusions are summarized as pseudotails. Superficially they may resemble true tails. They contain normal or abnormal tissue, e.g. cartilage, lipoma and glioma. We report a case of prenatal diagnosis o

The "dural tail sign": not always a meningioma.

Periorbital masses are often referred to oculoplastic surgeons. We report a 20-year-old patient presenting with a tender supertemporal mass that on gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a prominent dural enhancement adjacent to the mass, the so-called "dural tail sign." This sign has been reported to be highly specific for a meningioma; however recent literature challenges this view. In this case as well, the "dural tail sign" was not produced by a meningioma.

The human tail: a benign stigma. Case report.

Thirty-three cases of true human tails have been reported in the modern English literature. A new case is described and its radiological and pathological features are presented. A review of the literature and analysis of the pathological characteristics of this interesting lumbosacral stigma indicate that the true human tail is a benign condition not associated with any underlying cord malformation.

Cholecystokinin inhibits tail pinch-induced eating in rats.

Peripheral administration of the COOH-terminal octapeptide of cholecystokinin in doses from 1 to 100 micrograms per kilogram of body weight (0.25 to 25.0 micrograms per rat) significantly antagonized tail pinch-induced eating in rats, an animal model for stress-induced human hyperphagia. Centrally administered cholecystokinin was effective only in high doses (3 micrograms into the cerebral ventricle). The finding that the minimal effective dose of cholecystokinin in suppressing stress-induced appetitive behavior is smaller after peripheral than central administration suggests that the peptide

Intracellular pH dynamics promotes zebrafish larval tail regeneration.

Intracellular pH (pHi) dynamics regulates numerous cellular processes, including migration and proliferation. While these functions are well-established in cell lines, the role of pHi changes in vivo is less well understood. We generated a transgenic zebrafish line expressing a fluorescent ratiometric pHi biosensor and identified functional changes in pHi during zebrafish larval tail regeneration. We found that tail amputation led to a transient decrease in pHi, followed by a prolonged increase in pHi above pre-amputation values. Moreover, we showed that pharmacologically inhibiting Na+/H+ exc

Decoding ALS from the tail end of RNA.

In this issue of Cell Genomics, McKeever et al.1 generate a single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of ALS/FTLD brain and reveal widespread alternative polyadenylation changes. Their findings highlight 3' end RNA processing as a central integrator of stress responses, cell-type specificity, and disease susceptibility, offering new mechanistic insight and potential therapeutic directions.

Spitz-like tail carriage in two domestic cats.

Domestic cats use visual cues to communicate with conspecifics and humans. This includes the position and movement of the tail. The tail up signal (i.e. tail held vertically with the tip curled) has been identified as a friendly greeting signal between cats and from cats to humans. We present here a report of two cats unable to display the classic tail up signal due to Spitz-like (curled) tail characteristics, a morphology not previously reported in the scientific literature. The cats, a British Shorthair (Mn, 2 y) and Domestic Longhair (Fn, 8.5 y), belonged to different households and were pa
