Takayasu arteritis is an uncommon vasculitis, often referred to as aortic arch syndrome. It is most prevalent in young women. Physical findings such as the combination of pulseless arms and carotid bruits suggest the diagnosis. Associated skin manifestations such as pyoderma gangrenosum and erythema nodosum have been described. We present a 27-year-old woman with diffuse purpuric eruption and Takayasu arteritis. This appears to be the first description of such an association.

Takayasu arteritis with renal artery involvement was the cause of severe persistent hypertension in eight children under 12 years of age. Features of severe hypertension dominated the clinical picture. Unequal or absent pulses were found in three patients. An irregular contour of the descending thoracic aorta on the chest roentgenogram was an early clue to the diagnosis. On aortography both renal arteries were affected in five patients, although a discrepancy in kidney size on excretory urography had suggested a unilateral lesion. Total aortography is mandatory to outline the full extent of th

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) causes inflammation and necrosis of vessel walls, leading to aneurysm formation, extensive coronary damage and valvular abnormalities. We review a case of recurrent coronary, aortic and mitral valve involvement in a patient with TA and discuss the various treatment options available for such patients.

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a large vessel vasculitis especially seen in young women. Because of nonspecific symptoms diagnois is difficult and confused with other diseases. Delayed treatment increase morbidity and mortality. It effects primarly pulmonary artery in lung involvement. To our knowledge endobronchial involvement has not been reported previously in the literature. Due to rarity we present our patient whom we observed with the diagnosis of endobronchial tuberculosis and confirmed the diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis after 9 months.

Cancer is associated with autoimmune diseases. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of cancer in a cohort of patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) and to compare this incidence with the general population cancer rate in South Korea in a retrospective cohort study. The medical records of TA patients who underwent medical care at our institution between 1979 and 2009 were reviewed. The 2008 National Cancer Registry was used as the reference to calculate the standardized incidence ratio (SIR). The mean age of 180 patients was 48.6 ± 14.3 years, and 87.2 % of the patients were female. During

Takayasu's arteritis is an idiopathic chronic inflammatory disease affecting the aorta, its major branches and the pulmonary arteries. It leads to stenosis, occlusion, dilatation, and aneurysm formation in the involved vessels. Visceral arterial involvement occurs in 11 to 68% cases. Steno-obstructive lesions are most commonly seen and are usually symptomatic. Dilative and aneurismal lesions are uncommon and, when present, are usually clinically silent. Renal arteries are most commonly involved (24 to 68%), resulting in renovascular hypertension, whereas mesenteric arterial involvement is seen

We report a 40-year-old woman with saddle shaped-nose and bilateral deformed "cauliflower" ears who was admitted to our clinic because of arthralgia, fatigue, weakness and coldness in both arms, recurrent swelling and pain of the nose and both auricles. On physical examination, bruits were heard over both carotid arteries and blood pressure was not measurable in both upper extremities. Conventional angiography revealed total occlusion of left common carotid, right internal carotid, right subclavian, right renal and bilateral vertebral arteries. Relapsing polychondritis and associated Takayasu'

Takayasu's disease is a non specific, chronic, inflammatory panarteritis. It affects the aorta, its chief collaterals and the pulmonary arteries. Clinical manifestations depend on the site and the severity of the occlusive vascular lesion. We report a case observed in a young woman who presented ischemic stroke as the inaugural sign of Takayasu's disease.

BACKGROUND: Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a nonspecific autoimmune inflammation manifested with systemic large vessel vasculitis which affects predominantly the aorta and its main branches.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 40-year-old woman with a two-year history of the symptoms of compromised circulation in the head, the neck, the upper extremities and the right leg, followed by claudications in the left leg, numbness in the left hand and stenocardia. Aortic arch angyography revealed occlusion of the right subclavian artery stenosis of the right vertebral artery (20-30%) and the right iliac arter

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a neutrophilic dermatosis characterized by destructive, necrotizing and noninfective ulceration of the skin mostly on lower extremities. PG is well known as a complication of Takayasu's arteritis in Japan. However, this association is not commonly observed in North American and European patients. We describe a case of PG that was associated with Takayasu's arteritis who was successfully treated with systemic cyclosporin. We have reviewed 35 well-documented PG cases with Takayasu's arteritis in comparison to 106 PG cases without Takayasu's arteritis. The results dem

Takayasu arteritis, an inflammatory and obliterative disease of medium and large arteries, is classified as a giant cell arteritis. It has a predilection for the aortic arch, its main branches, and coronary and pulmonary arteries. The early symptoms of Takayasu arteritis may be mainly systemic and may resemble polymyalgia rheumatica. The etiology is unknown but autoimmunity has been suggested to play a role. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, physical findings, and imaging, because tissue diagnosis is rarely feasible. Unlike atherosclerotic vascular disease, Takayasu arteritis affects primarily,

This report describes a case of Takayasus arteritis in a 19-year-old Palestinian female. She conceived after diagnosis. Her pregnancy was complicated by uncontrolled hypertension, which was not associated with other markers of disease activity. Despite aggressive medical treatment, cesarean section had to be carried out at 34 weeks of pregnancy because of uncontrolled hypertension. A live fetus was borne, and her blood pressure was subsequently controlled with a single antihypertensive agent.

The etiology of Takayasu's arteritis is unknown; however, abnormality of the immune system plays an important role. To clarify a possible association between inflammatory diseases and Takayasu's arteritis, the authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 36 patients (2 men and 34 women), admitted to their department with this diagnosis. They found that 11 of the 36 patients had at least 1 other chronic or subacute inflammatory disease: Chronic tonsillitis, tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck, chronic hepatitis B (infectious diseases); pyoderma gangrenosum, erythema nodosum (skin l

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that can affect the aorta and its branches. The cerebral ischemia in TA can be caused by a variety of mechanisms, and the focus of this study is to detect the possible contribution of microembolus in the pathogenesis of stroke.
METHODS: Eighteen patients with TA according to the criteria for the classification of TA of the American College of Rheumatology and 100 age-matched healthy controls were studied. Both middle cerebral arteries were monitored by transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound

UNLABELLED: Takaysu's arteritis (TA) is regarded to be a frequent cause of hypertension in Asian population. However some reports have recently informed about increasing frequency of its also in non Asian people. The aim of this study was to evaluated own experiences on diagnosis and treatment of TA as well as prevalence of TA in hypertensive patients in Caucasian population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During last 15 years we examined 4190 hypertensive patients hospitalized in our department. Renovascular hypertension was recognized in 139 cases. The diagnosis of TA was based on angiographically

OBJECTIVE: The roles of surgical and endovascular treatments for patients with Takayasu's arteritis are not clear. We report our experience in the neurosurgical and/or neuroendovascular treatment of patients with Takayasu's arteritis who exhibited ischemic neurological symptoms.
METHODS: Between 1994 and 1998, seven patients with Takayasu's arteritis and neurological symptoms were treated at the Stanford University Medical Center. All patients were angiographically evaluated and received maximal medical therapy. Cerebral blood flow studies were performed for six patients. Three patients under
