BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The biomechanical effects of foot orthoses (FOs) with and without a lateral bar compared to a control condition during walking at different speeds are still unknown. The objective of this study was to compare the biomechanical effects of functional FOs with and without a lateral bar to a control condition during comfortable walking in individuals with cavus feet and determine if their effects change at a fast speed.
METHODS: Fifteen individuals with cavus feet (age: 25.3 ± 5.8 yrs) walked under two experimental conditions (FOs with and without a lateral bar) and a control

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), also known as clubfoot, is a common musculoskeletal entity that affects one to two per 1000 live births worldwide. Imaging modalities including radiography, US, and MRI have emerged as valuable tools for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of CTEV. The deformity is characterized by midfoot cavus, forefoot adductus, and hindfoot varus and equinus. The Ponseti method of manipulation and serial casting is the standard treatment of CTEV. Radiography shows the anatomy, position, and relationships of the different bones of the foot. US allows accurate asse

BACKGROUND: Lisfranc (tarsometatarsal joint) injuries are relatively rare, accounting for less than 1% of all fractures, and as many as 20% of subtle Lisfranc injuries are missed at the initial patient presentation. An undiagnosed Lisfranc injury can have devastating consequences to the patient. Therefore, any factor that can raise a clinician's index of suspicion to make this diagnosis is potentially important. The cavus foot has been associated with various maladies of the lower extremity, but to our knowledge, it has not been reported to be associated with Lisfranc injury.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common cause of neurogenic cavus foot. This study aimed to identify key morphologic differences between pes cavus in individuals with CMT, idiopathic cavus, and healthy controls.
METHODS: This single-site, case-control study included individuals 18-65 years old without prior foot and ankle surgery. Participants were grouped based on disease state; all patients with CMT had clinical or genetic confirmation of the diagnosis. Morphologic assessment was completed using HiRise weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT). Statistical analysis i

BACKGROUND: Pes cavovarus is a foot deformity that can be idiopathic (I-PC) or acquired secondary to other pathology. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common adult cause for acquired pes cavovarus deformity (CMT-PC). The foot morphology of these distinct patient groups has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study was to assess if morphological differences exist between CMT-PC, I-PC and normal feet (controls) using weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of WBCT scans performed between May 2013 and June 2017 was undertaken. WBCT s

BACKGROUND: The complex deformities in cavovarus feet of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease are difficult to evaluate. The aim of this study was to quantify the initial standing alignment correction achieved after joint-sparing CMT cavovarus reconstruction using pre- and postoperative weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT).
METHODS: Twenty-nine CMT cavovarus reconstructions were retrospectively analyzed. Three-dimensional measurements were performed using semiautomated software (Bonelogic 2.1) to investigate changes in sagittal, axial, and coronal parameters. Pre- and postoperative data were

Club foot or congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common developmental disorder of the foot, affecting 1 per 1,000 live births. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the anatomical bony arrangement of the clubfoot deformity radiologically and to correlate this arrangement with the Pirani clinical scoring system. This descriptive, analytical study was conducted in three centres in Sudan. It recruited all the patients of both sexes with CTEV attending these centres, and excluding children on conservative cast and those who already had surgery. Data were collected using structured ques

Idiopathic talipes equinovarus (ITEV), or isolated clubfoot, is a common developmental anomaly that is characterized by a rigid foot, adducted forefoot, cavus midfoot, equinovarus of the hindfoot, and hypoplastic calf musculature. The etiology of this common birth defect is largely unknown, but genetic factors have been implicated in population and family studies and maternal smoking during pregnancy has been identified as an environmental risk factor. The biotransformation of exogenous substances, such as tobacco smoke, is modulated by numerous genes including N-acetylation genes, NAT1 and NA

BACKGROUND: The typical cavovarus deformity seen in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) involves plantarflexion of the first ray. The exact apex of the deformity has never been proven, although it is presumed to be within the medial cuneiform. The aim of this study was to utilize weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT) to localize and quantify first ray plantarflexion deformity in CMT patients.
METHODS: WBCTs of 16 CMT patients with lateral Méary's angle > 20 degrees were compared to controls utilizing semi-automated analysis software. A local coordinate system based on the first metata

BACKGROUND: The cavovarus foot is a complex 3-dimensional deformity. Although a multitude of techniques are described for its surgical management, few of these are evidence based or guided by classification systems. Surgical management involves realignment of the hindfoot and soft tissue balancing, followed by forefoot balancing. Our aim was to analyze the pattern of residual forefoot deformities once the hindfoot is corrected, to guide forefoot correction.
METHODS: We included 20 cavovarus feet from 16 adult patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth who underwent weightbearing CT (mean age 43.4 year

BACKGROUND: Cole osteotomy is performed in patients having a cavus deformity with the apex of the deformity in the midfoot. Correction of the deformity at this midfoot level improves foot and ankle stability by creating a plantigrade foot. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiographic results of six feet (five patients) that underwent Cole midfoot osteotomy (2011-2015).
METHODS: The patients had different etiologies (spastic cerebral palsy, burn sequelae, spina bifida, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). Dorsal and slightly laterally based transverse wedge osteotomy through the navi

INTRODUCTION: Baropodometrical digital techniques map the pressures exerted on the foot plant during both static and dynamic loadings. The study of the distribution of such pressures makes it possible to evaluate the postural and locomotory biomechanics together with its pathological variations.
METHODS: From January 2011 to August 2016 we conducted a cross sectional study in order to diagnose flatfoot and hollowfoot through the baropodometric analysis, and collecting additional information such as gender and the age. 7816 static and dynamic baropodometric tests and radiological exams of the

Cavovarus deformity is considered an anatomical risk factor for chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). However, subtle deformity can be difficult to detect, and its correction is controversial. The current study aimed to evaluate clinical and radiographic outcomes of a modified Broström procedure (MBP) with additional procedures for CLAI with subtle cavovarus deformity and a positive peek-a-boo heel sign. We reviewed the records of 15 patients who underwent MBP with additional procedures for CLAI with a positive peek-a-boo heel sign between August 2009 and April 2015. Consecutive physical a

Cavovarus deformities in children and adolescents require sound considerations concerning the timing for corrective surgery. Progression can be recognized best by repeated pedographic examination with evaluation of the typical features of cavovarus deformity. Surgical correction consists of a combination of soft tissue release, bony realignment, and restoration of muscle balance. In most cases plantar or medioplantar soft tissue release should be considered, whereas calf muscle lengthening is rarely indicated. Typical joint-sparing bone procedures are elevating osteotomies at the medial tarsom

INTRODUCTION: Neurologic pes cavus is a progressive deformity that is difficult to treat during growth. The present study reports results of non-operative management, based on the pathophysiology of the deformity, by untwisting nocturnal splint, preceded in some cases by untwisting walking cast. The objective was to assess efficacy and impact on indications for surgery.
METHOD: Twenty-three children (35 feet) were included. All had neurologic cavovarus foot, which was progressive in 24 feet (69%) (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). Mean age at initiation of treatment was 8.8 years. In 13 feet (38%

For pre-operative osteoarthritis (OA) patients with varus knee, previous studies showed inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted this study to better identify the association of Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) score and mechanical alignment. 44 patients (51 knees) with constitutional varus knee caused by combined deformities (LDFA (lateral distal femoral angle) > 90°and MPTA (medial proximal tibial angle) < 85°)) were selected and analyzed with a mean follow-up period of 14 months after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). From January 2015 to December 2016, patients were collected consecuti

BACKGROUND: Subtle cavus foot (SCF) is an entity characterized by mild cavus. However, few studies have examined whether a SCF may be a risk factor for chronic ankle instability (CAI).
METHODS: This study included 116 patients who underwent lateral ankle ligament repair (modified Broström operation) for CAI and 105 controls. We used the standing lateral radiograph, so compared calcaneal pitch angle, Meary's angle, heights of the first and fifth metatarsal bases, and fibular positions between groups. Additionally, two observers subjectively rated the standing lateral radiographs for the presen

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), often known as clubfoot, is one of the most common congenital deformities of the foot and ankle, affecting one in every 1,000 live births. The deformity has four components: ankle equinus, hindfoot varus, forefoot adductus, and midfoot cavus. The Ponseti casting technique of CTEV management has proven to be more effective, generating higher positive outcomes and lesser complications than conventional surgical methods.
METHODS: This study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital centre in southern Rajasthan, India. Twenty cases wit
