The sounds of handheld audio players.

Hearing experts and public health organizations have longstanding hearing safety concerns about personal handheld audio devices, which are growing in both number and popularity. This paper reviews the maximum sound levels of handheld compact disc players, MP3 players, and an iPod. It further reviews device factors that influence the sound levels produced by these audio devices and ways to reduce the risk to hearing during their use.

Effect of reading with reversed speech on frequency of stuttering in adults.

This study explored the effect of reading with reversed speech on the frequency of stuttering. Eight adults who stutter served as participants and read four 300-syllable passages while listening to three types of speech stimuli: normal speech (choral reading), reversed speech at normal speed, reversed speech at half speed, and a control condition of no auditory feedback. A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed a significant decrease in stuttering frequency in the choral reading condition but not in reversed speech at normal and half speed. However, the reversed speech at half-speed con

Variability of acoustic segment durations after prolonged-speech treatment for stuttering.

Existing literature suggests that one of the effects of treatment based on prolonged speech is increased durations of acoustic segments. However, the external validity of the data concerned may be questioned because the data were not based on spontaneous speech samples and were gathered from subjects with unknown treatment histories. With this in mind, the present investigation used young clients with no history of treatment based on prolonged speech and obtained pretreatment and posttreatment acoustic measures from spontaneous speech samples. Acoustic measures showed no significant posttreatm

Different Suture Materials for Arthroscopic Transtibial Pull-out Repair of Medial Meniscal Posterior Root Tears: A Human Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: Transtibial pull-out repair of the medial meniscal posterior root (MMPR) has been largely assessed through biomechanical studies. Biomechanically comparing different suture types would further optimize MMPR fixation and affect clinical care. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal suture material for MMPR fixation. It was hypothesized that ultra high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) suture tape would be biomechanically superior to UHMWPE suture and standard suture. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: The MMPR attachment wa

[Comparative speech audiometry studies with compact disk].

We compared the results of speech audiometry, performed with recorded tape and CD, respectively, in 21 subjects with bone conduction hearing loss, and in 27 subjects with sensorineural hearing loss. In all cases, speech audiometry was performed by using the German Freiburg speech test material, recorded in 1969 on the basis of the German DIN standard 45626. In subjects with an air-bone gap, the hearing loss for speech is 2.3 dB smaller if tested by use of CD, and the speech recognition is 10.5 points better, respectively. Smaller differences could be found in sensorineural HL: For CD, the hear

Obturator approach in the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence using tension-free transvaginal tape.

The study reviews the surgical treatment results of urinary stress incontinence in the group of 51 female patients, in whom the tension-free transvaginal tape was placed beneath the middle part of urethra using obturator approach during the period from 2005 to 2009. The method of surgery applied in all patients was obturator approach ("inside-out" method sec. de Leval), using a synthetic tension-free transvaginal prolen tape. After the sub-urethral tunnel had been created by scissors, the obturator membrane was perforated, then the placement of wing guides followed, through which helical needl

In this study the results for the validation of a reattributional training program applied to the fear of flying are presented. The program is made up of 13 (+/- 1) sessions and consists of three phases: Information; reattributional training; and the elaboration and application of the treatment designed by the patient with the help of the therapist. The program was applied to 24 patients while 24 other patients made up the waiting control group. The therapeutic success was evaluated by means of self-report scales, and by recording psychophysiological variables in a situation in which subjects

Can Suture Tape Improve Radial Meniscal Tear Repair Over Traditional Suture? A Biomechanical Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: While studies have demonstrated that the "hashtag" suture pattern may improve biomechanical repair properties in radial meniscal tears, the effect of the type of suture within the hashtag is unknown. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repair strength of the hashtag repair using suture tape compared to traditional 2-0 suture. It was hypothesized that suture tape, particularly in the "rebar" portion of the hashtag repair, would significantly increase construct strength compared to traditional 2-0 suture. A repetitive movement detector used for automatic monitoring and quantification of scratching in mice.

We have designed an economical non-invasive movement detector for small animal studies and used it for monitoring and quantifying itch in mice. The system is based on a sensitive force transducer positioned below a recording platform holding a lightweight polystyrene recording box in which an animal is placed. A programmed micro-controller is used to discriminate between non-specific movement, grooming behaviour, and scratching movements made by the animal's hind limb. Following sub-dermal injection of histamine receptor agonists into the neck of a mouse, dose-related scratching occurred which

Continuous bed-side monitoring of the ECG for detection of silent myocardial ischaemia.

In patients with unstable angina pectoris, transient episodes of ischaemia occur frequently and the prognostic implications of those predominantly silent episodes have been shown. The method of Holter tape recording is, however, not ideal for the care of unstable patients: (a) the results of a recording period are only available after this period is finished and subsequent evaluation has taken place; and (b) the sensitivity of monitoring may be increased by recording more than two leads. We have used a portable ECG computer, which monitors the 12-lead ECG every 20 s and records ECGs either whe

[EEG studies before and after hemodialysis].

For a sample of 10 men and 11 women EEGs were recorded, the first being made immediately before hemodialysis, the second immediately after, and the remainder at fixed subsequent periods. Apart from traditional visual evaluation every EEG was recorded on tape, to permit computer analysis of frequencies.--The visual evaluation showed in nearly all cases an increase of dysrhythmic waves after hemodialysis. More than half the patients had additional pathological patterns, especially during hyperventilation.--Special frequency analysis of the basic rhythm in 14 cases proved that the slight accelera

Development of a monitoring system for vinyl chloride gas in air by using an HCl monitoring tape and pyrolyzer.

A continuous monitoring system for vinyl chloride gas in air has been developed using an HCl monitoring tape and pyrolyzer consisting of a heater around a quartz tube. It is based on the color change of the tape by reaction with HCl gas produced by decomposition of vinyl chloride gas in the heated quartz tube. The conversion efficiency of vinyl chloride into HCl depends on the temperature of the pyrolyzer. The tape impregnated with a coloring solution that includes Metanil Yellow (pH indicator; pH 1.2-2.3, red-yellow), glycerin and methanol is a highly sensitive means of detecting HCl gas. Whe

Long-Term Functional and Histological Outcomes Following Sutureless Peripheral Nerve Repair Using Nerve Tape in Pigs.

Severe peripheral nerve injuries result in incomplete recovery despite neurorrhaphy. Microsurgical suturing is technically demanding, time-intensive, and may produce variable fascicular alignment. Nerve Tape is an FDA-approved sutureless device enabling rapid, reproducible nerve coaptation. This study compared Nerve Tape with epineurial microsuturing following common peroneal nerve transection in Yucatan minipigs. Over 12 months, both groups demonstrated reinnervation of the tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum brevis, representing proximal and distal muscle targets, respectively. Tibialis
